People complain that it's too different than any of the other games. Like, YES that's the POINT You can't do elders in V5, hunger dice break after a certain blood potency. If you wanna do any non-21st-century story, it's contrived and painful. So it's GOOD to now have something more modern than V20

I saw people flaming about how "D&D 5e" the new V6 is, because, i kid you not, it recommends the occasional battlemap and distance measuring and it has too many maneuvers and conditions. Like, my guy, V20 pp. 274-281 is NOT bringing anybody new into the scene. (It's also why I run "M5" and not M20)

100% agree, call-out culture doesn't belong in TTRPGs at all IMHO. (Except when people are uncomfortable for Other Reasons, but I think most people on bsky already agree on that)

Other stims like knitting and making dice towers aren't designed by BigTech solely to steal your attention. You don't have to be actively in-spotlight to be "doing anything else". Teamwork, participating in the collaborative fiction, and being aware of the situation, is play you can't do on a phone

Which is why a phone ban can be a good starting point for this conversation. If a person needs their phone for work, that's ok. If they're waiting on a text, ok. But if someone "needs" a phone to stim for 70% of the game, it's reasonable to say no, find another stim

Or, if the problem is endemic, maybe you could talk to... all of the players? At once? Maybe a kindly-worded rule up front, at session zero: "Hey, I don't like phones at my table, if you need it for work, that's fine, but it upsets me to see people on tiktok while we're having emotional dialogue"

I also see a completely different level of player engagement from Dimension 20 versus Critical Role. In Age of Umbra the players were straight up browsing twitter/bsky/whatever when not actively in the scene. D20, everyone is engaged during every scene. It's such a huge difference even to watch

Look, it's demoralizing to run a combat and to see 2/5 players playing candy crush between turns. I don't mind if an email comes in and a player checks to make sure they didn't miss a time-critical ping at work, but playing literal videogames beneath the table is just disrespectful to everyone

Rejoice! Mage is on the horizon for a 6th edition, according to the FAQ/panel. It’s specifically listed, next to VTM-TDA and Changeling. So we’re still probably 2-4 years out but at least it’s more news than we’ve gotten since OPP lost rights to M20
