🧬 #CruciferWeek 🌿 Divergent evolutionary trajectories of male and female investment in the Brassicaceae by Haghighatnia and co-authors. #freeaccess article 👉 doi.org/rndf @plantreproevo.bsky.social @rosischmickl.bsky.social #Brassicaceae #PlantScience #PlantGenomics #Botany
Across 158 Brassicaceae species, pollen and ovule production have followed different evolutionary paths. While ovule production is strongly constrained by ancestry, pollen production is more flexible, especially as species evolve towards self-pollination.

Imprinted regulatory networks reveal the molecular cross-talk between paternal and maternal genomes in the endosperm of Arabidopsis arenosa
Imprinted genes do not act alone to shape seed development, but as a complex network - just like any other gene. Yet, the molecular context in which they are embedded, i.e. their gene network, remains...

The abundance of pollen coat small signaling proteins shows limited convergence between independent selfing transitions in Arabidopsis and Capsella
In plants, a key example of convergence is the repeated evolution of floral traits associated with the transition from outcrossing to self-fertilization, often resulting in the ‘selfing syndrome’ (e.....

It's great to see this work finally out! @newphyt.bsky.social Here we showed that auxin production after fertilization is a conserved, paternal-triggered mechanism for seed initiation in angiosperms.

Hybridization and introgression are major evolutionary processes. Since the 1940s, the prevailing view has been that they shape plants far more than animals. In our new study (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... ), we find the opposite: animals exchange genes more, and for longer, than plants

If bottom-up approaches still needed evidence they work, #EMPSEB30 gave it. A warm atmosphere, sustainability prize, engaging DEI session, emotional workshops, alternative presentations, so many out-of-the-box things. Altogether with a really high scientific quality. Thank you @empseb30.bsky.social!

Hello BlueSky! Super excited that this work is out thanks to a great team work with Nélida Padilla-Garcia as lead author! We looked at what shaped the purging and fixation of TEs in populations across Arabidopsis lyrata species range. Short answer: the usual suspects, but also genomic imprinting!
