Congratulations! I just purchased a copy for the library. And I'm going to get one for my personal use, too! Can't wait to read it!

San Diego is not expendable. Our lives are not bargaining chips. The President’s words were reckless, dangerous, and a betrayal of the people he swore to protect. I love this city, and I will never stay quiet when someone treats our families, neighbors, and communities like they are disposable.
Tonight, the President of the United States stood on a stage and told a cheering crowd, “Let them take out San Diego.” He went on to call the destruction of our city “a very small price to pay.”

San Diego is home to 1.4 million people. We are workers, families, children, veterans, immigrants, sailors, Marines, and people who love this city and call it home. We are not expendable. Los Angeles is not expendable. No American city is.

For a President to speak so casually about an attack on the people he is sworn to protect is reckless, dangerous, and treasonous. At a time when American servicemembers and their families are already bearing the consequences of his war with Iran, San Diegans deserve a President focused on keeping them safe, not talking about sacrificing them.

Every elected leader in San Diego, regardless of party, should condemn these comments without qualification. There should be nothing partisan about standing up for our city and the people who live here.

Our lives are not bargaining chips.

Donald, keep our name out of your mouth.

it's "curious" that NYT includes this photo with no context at all for the graffiti on the righthand side of the doorway (this is Cornell)

Reviewing page proofs is simultaneously exciting and anxiety provoking. I know, I just know, that I’ll miss something no matter how closely I go over the copy, and that error(s) will immediately jump out at me when I see the final version 😅

The Stone Sky by N. K. Jemisin (Book 3 in The Broken Earth series). It’s taking all my willpower (plus a stack of library books that have been piling up) not to immediately start re-reading the series after finishing the last book a few hours ago. So so good!

Let books be. Today kicks off #BannedBooksWeek, an annual observation started more than 40 years ago in response to a sudden surge in attempts to censor or remove books in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Sound familiar? Find ways to get involved and spread the word: bit.ly/4yvixbB.
LET BOOKS BE. You've really got to admire how astonished and appalled he is about an institution he runs acting exactly in the way it always had, and on an issue that didn't bother him until it became a public scandal. Nothing the person who runs the place could possibly have done before now.

University leaders seem to forget that "the public" includes students, faculty, and staff who study and work at the institutions they lead. The "public" is not some external, amorphous thing to the university. If you can't treat the people on your campus with decency, then yeah, they won't trust you

Higher ed leaders are doing "decline of public trust" discourse in order to avoid talking about all the things they've done to undermine their institutions, including exploiting contingent faculty labor, attacking student protest, and underfunding the humanities

Pretty sure they’re doing that here, too. And when asking about AI usage in our work, they collapse teaching, research & service into 1 Q, which is hugely problematic. I know many folks who use it for service work but wouldn’t dream of using it for scholarship or pedagogy. The data are garbage IMO

No wonder the survey data are so easily manipulatable to justify spending precious dollars on these tools rather than on cost of living wage adjustments or hiring enough people to do the work (esp now that GenAI tools drive up workload demands)

Took the survey and boy is it poorly designed! Like so many surveys, it's written by/for those who use commercial genAI tools (regularly). Qs betray a user perspective & seem rooted in on faulty assumptions that ethical use is possible. Plus, the Likert scales don't include a "no opinion/neutral."
