I interviewed Mary Louise Weller once about a screenplay she was writing and producing about the ill-fated jockey Mary Bacon. A horse lover and rider herself, she was a delight to talk to. Mandy Pepperidge had “Animal House” stories for days and damn near walked off with the movie. P-I-G R.I.P.

Buena Vista Social Club is hilarious, completely inert from a narrative standpoint, I couldn’t tell you a single character’s name, and there is zero emotional payoff. And none of that matters because as a straight-up Cuban concert with Jose Iglesias as bandleader it absolutely whips mucho ass.
