To be the boss is to sit alone at your desk, haunted by the suspicion that you are not in the driver's seat, but rather, you are in the back seat playing with a Fisher Price steering wheel.

It's unfair to call the Marvel movies "kid's movies", they also have serious political messages, such as: - America is good - the military is good - military contractors are good - billionaires are good - heroes protect the existing power structure, villains try to change society

If generative AI tools generate inappropriate language, plagiarized content, biased content, errors, mistakes, incorrect references, or misleading content, and that output is included in scientific works, it is the responsibility of the author(s). 2/

We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/

The penalty is a 1-year ban from arXiv followed by the requirement that subsequent arXiv submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue. 4/

Examples of incontrovertible evidence: hallucinated references, meta-comments from the LLM ("here is a 200 word summary; would you like me to make any changes?"; "the data in this table is illustrative, fill it in with the real numbers from your experiments") end/"

“If plagiarism is wrong & bad & theft is wrong & bad & schools are duty-bound to help instill these values in students, how can they justify adoption of a technology that is, at its core, built on stolen work & whose purpose is the extrusion of text to be passed off as one's own thinking & writing?”

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon. Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

One of the things that really fucking annoys me about AI is that people *do not understand it* (on purpose, bc these companies want it that way) and they assume it’s as reliable as the computers they’ve been using their whole life when it’s actually about as reliable as your least capable intern

Would be interesting to compare the results on more recent models - but this problem won’t go away. LLMs are always going to be extrapolating from what has already, and often, been thought, which is why they aren’t windows to the future but anchors to the past.

Every future imagined by a tech company is worse than the previous iteration.
With generative AI models now capable of producing fluid, context-rich dialogue, Mattel’s new vision is a toy that grows with the child, holds personalized conversations, and recalls past interactions to adjust its responses. It may learn a child’s favorite story or phrase, sing their favorite song, or have full conversations about almost anything. Mattel has promised that these interactions will be “secure” and “age appropriate,” but not much is known beyond that.

An abbreviation (ABB) in a journal article (JA) or Grant Application (GA) is rarely worth the words it saves. Every ABB requires cognitive resources (CR) and at my age by the time I'm halfway through a JA or GA I no longer have the CR to remember what your ABB stood for.
