I'm so excited to finally be able to announce that my novella 'Marooned Off Ceres' is being published by @wtpress.bsky.social this autumn, alongside 'Top Tips For Loving a Lizard' by the inestimable @stephencoxauthor.bsky.social as Wiz Duo 4. I'm indebted to @hierath77.bsky.social for fantastic /1

Text of the Press Release:

Wizard’s Tower Announces Wiz Duo #4
Wizard’s Tower is delighted to announce the fourth in our series of back-to-back novellas. Wiz Duo #4 will include stories by Ellen Mellor and Stephen Cox.

As usual we have selected stories that complement each other. In this case both Ellen’s ‘Marooned Off Ceres’ and Stephen’s ‘Top Tips for Loving a Lizard’ are first contact stories in which the lead protagonist is queer-identified.

Ellen Mellor said: “I’m so happy that Wizards Tower chose my story for publication. I loved every moment of writing (and rewriting and redrafting and…) ‘Marooned Off Ceres’ and the finished product (with absolutely spot-on editing by Jo Hall) exceeded my every wish for it. It’s exactly the sort of story I love—a science fiction story in which the trans identity of the protagonist is an important part of who she is but doesn’t overshadow the rest of her. I feel that stories written by and centring trans people are needed more than ever to show that we have our own voice and we will not allow ourselves to be silenced.”

Stephen Cox said: “This is the story of my heart, the story I wished my teenage self could read. I wrote it for the glorious joy of writing it, but I’m also conscious of how sinister forces want to put us back in a box. We must imagine better futures, because we can make what we can see and feel.”

Editors Roz Clarke & Joanne Hall said: “We knew we wanted to publish Ellen’s novella as soon as we read it. It’s rare that a story makes us spit tea laughing AND makes us cry, and the ending was so perfect. And Stephen’s story arriving at the same time just felt like serendipity. It’s funny, raunchy, romantic and satisfyingly twisty. We both have a real soft spot for first contact stories, and we’re delighted that these two novellas work so well together.”

'A simple (perfect) life' - my spring landscape is finally finished! An apple orchard in bloom, old railway, sheep with their lambs and an allotment being prepared for growing :) Zoom in to see all the other tiny details too... I think this might be my favourite aerial embroidery I've ever done!

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn aerial view landscape. It depicts an apple orchard in bloom in the centre, allotments to the left and sheep in their field at the bottom. Train tracks go past the top of the orchard and allotment.

Sewn train tracks past an apple orchard (to the left).

An angled view of a sewn vegetable allotment surrounded by rough land, trees and with train tracks to the left.

An angled view of embroidered bushes and paths going through them leading to an orchard, allotment and fields.

A rendered digital painting of two men as a study of Springtime (Pierre Auguste Cot). One man is a scruffy tan-skinned human with pulled up black hair, and the other is an elegant, pale autumn eladrin with flowing red hair with flowers in it.

A rendered digital illustration of an original DnD character. She is a pale pink-skinned, albino tiefling woman with long white hair and burn scars across her body. She wears many golden piercings and a flowing red dress as she leans back on an intricate wooden vanity. The vanity includes a mirror that reflects her from behind, as well as a wooden sparrow detail perched at the top of the mirror. She stands on a brown wooden floor, and the walls behind her are blue. In the reflection of the mirror are somewhat abstract indications of yellow and gold windows.

A rendered digital half body painting of a tiefling with iridescent skin holding a jar of fireflies, which is the only lighting in the piece. He has long white hair and wears a pale yellow blouse, brown pants, and a golden earring. His eyes are pale blue with a gold ring around the pupil, and he smiles at the fireflies in the jar. The background is black.

A rendered digital illustration of two men lying in a grassy field. The fire genasi is kissing the forehead of the satyr, and they are both smiling with their eyes closed. The fire genasi has grey rocky skin, lava cracks around his eye, lava hair, and a lava arm through which the bones of his arm and hand are visible. Where lava would connect with his skin are cooled magma rocks. The satyr has pale skin, short, curly blond hair, and horns that almost reach to the genasi's chest. He wears a blue collar with ruffles and a golden bell, as well as a blue shirt that is too big for his frame (it is the genasi's). The illustration has a fiery glow near the lava.

🏳️‍⚧️🌿HAPPY TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY!🌿🏳️‍⚧️ i'm viktor, a trans man illustrator from the u.k (unfortunately), and historical fiction, fashion, and fantasy is my cup of tea 🍵 look upon my visible self and artworks (and hire me) 🏳️‍⚧️ #tdov #transdayofvisibility

A digital illustration of a medieval banner. It says in medieval inspired script "ye olde trans rights". It is decorated with plants and blue, pink, and white flowers.

Two portrait aligned digital illustrations of book covers.
Left: An illustration of Afaeran and King Galdor from the webcomic Wundor. They stand in the centre, facing each other. They are bordered by Ancient Greek inspired white columns and an arch above them. The columns are covered with grapevines, vine leaves, and hanging purple grapes. Afaerun is an oche skinned elf with flowing light pink-white hair, and wears a curved silver and ruby tiara, he smiles as he looks at King Galdor. King Galdor is a purple skinned monarch with a single white horn growing from his head. He has flowing dark purple hair, and wears a red leaf laurel. He holds Afaerun's cheek in a romantic embrace.
Right: The cover for the book The Need for Dandelions by Alex Larkspur.
Two men stand back to back surrounded by depictions of dandelions. The man angled to the front is Galen. He has tan skin, red hair, and hazel eyes. A large portion of his face is covered by a burn scar. He wears a yellow tunic and brown pants, along with a pink flower pendant. He lifts up one hand, and looks concerned. The other man, facing towards the back but looks over his shoulder, is Sasha. He has light brown hair, dark brown eyes, and stubble. He is wearing leather armor and green shirt and pants. He is holding a sword.

2 different portrait illustrations side by side.
Left: Alder is a green skinned eladrin elf paladin. He stands nude in a forest. He wears a gold crown of laurels on his head. He looks down at the ground. He holds a sword in one hand, and a sprig of alder branch in the other, he has a shield attached to one arm. He is surrounded by green trees and yellow flowers.
Right: A digital illustration inspired by the pairing Hansry (Hans Capon and Henry of Skalitz from the game series Kingdom Come Deliverance). The illustration is influenced by a scene in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice. It is separated into 3 panels.
Panel 1: Hans Capon looks behind him in quiet shock at his bodyguard Henry.
Panel 2: Henry has touched Hans' ungloved hand with his gauntleted one in a gentle hold. The panel is surrounded by blooming flowers: herbs and plants that Henry can forage on his journey. Marigold, St John's Wort, Valerian, Sage, Chamomile, and Dandelion.
Panel 3: Henry meets Hans' eyes with an unreadable expression. He quietly yearns beneath it.

A digital illustration of a purple, green, and grey-blue themed bookshelf. The book shelf is filled with old tomes, Victorian inspired knick-knacks such as keys, teacups, candles, and a flask of a potion. On one of the shelves there is a framed picture of an anatomical human heart, along with a skull resting on a stack of books. On another shelf, there is a bust of Diana the Greek goddess.
