Have you had situations where your GM had just finished playing Project Zomboid and they character had clearly just died of thirst? It could happen to you.

I'm bad at self promotion, but did you know that I'm also an editor and that you can hire me? I have edited history books (most recently for Osprey) and TTRPGs (for Modiphius and Exalted Funeral among others). Full list: www.stuartellisgorman.com/editor Can contact me via website or here!

New ‘How to Play’ day! I can’t recommend many games to introduce somebody to historical games more than Baltic Empires. The simplicity of this epic game’s mechanics and flow make it a great entry point into wargames. A brilliant design by Brian Asklev, check it out here: youtu.be/49-uZQCmz4g?...

Hârnmaster is my favourite system by far, but it absolutely is the type of RPG that gives you a gorillion skills at chargen, and makes you get the average of 3 attributes to determine their starting value. I love it so much but it’s not for everyone!

I love getting second hand games like this. In it are also his custom glued together and photocopies scoresheet, as well as his handwritten strategy notes on his Montréal Expos season.

Got a copy of Strat-o-matic baseball from 1980. That copy of the game didn’t originally come with a d20, so for some resolutions you would need to generate a number between 1-20 shuffling the 20 included pink cards. The previous owner instead made this chart, which has a perfect 10/216 distribution!

Oh I know and love all of those - but they aren’t exactly leaning on OSR sensibilities!

Pierre Vagneur-Jones @pierrevj.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
They are certainly common but I haven’t seen many with the degrees of success which HM resolution has - if you’ve got examples I’d love to hear them!

Pierre Vagneur-Jones @pierrevj.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
Those are absolutely solutions yeah - but it’s hard to square having a broadly simple system with the need to cross reference things too much. HM doesn’t need much cross referencing once you get the system down - I find that AtD still requires constant cross referencing of tables (which is cool!)

Pierre Vagneur-Jones @pierrevj.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
I’ve been tinkering on how to fit it into an OSRish chassis too! The multiple levels of success interacting with the combat matrix makes it tough to elegantly insert though

Yess Harnmaster armour system my beloved - it and its wound system work so well together

Pierre Vagneur-Jones @pierrevj.bsky.social · 16/06/2026
Agreed! In a way that’s partially because of how encounters are framed - usually both sides just see each other, usually within walking distance, and the fight begins. In real life, completely invisible enemies in the woods would be shooting lone travellers on the road with no time to react

He wrote the book on why the longbow is overrated 😅 but in all seriousness, I like the blogpost - especially the idea of triggering a reaction from simply seeing the weapon

@pierrevj.bsky.social and I are back on our ACW bullshit, finally playing Dissimula Edizioni's Give Us Victories. Initial impressions are this is an overlooked gem. We're not entirely convinced by the combat resolution, but it's okay and everything else has been wonderful.
Screenshot of the map of the Battle of Chancellorsville from the Vassal module for Give Us Victories. The Union is threatening the Confederate position and has successfully taken Chancellorsville but suffered enormous losses in doing so. The map shows the area around Chancellorsville in beautiful hex and counter style.
