Many interesting TTRPG design ideas are foiled by players in refusing to engage with game mechanics over the wider 'conversational' meta layer where they can state they ignore the mechanic. If you design a game that's too interesting you're in danger of it being accused of not being a TTRPG at all.

If people explained monopoly like they seem to do every other boardgame they'd spend 30 minutes explaining what every community chest card did, how to mortgage a property, and how to get out of jail then look at you funny when you asked them what you're meant to do on your turn.

I heard someone describe modern day warhammer 40k as league of legends, you have 3 lanes of objectives and have to trade units across them to win, and I can't stop thinking how apt that is and why it explains why I find myself playing 4th and 5th ed beyond being a 30 something boomer.

Ran a surprise game of @unpanny-valley.bsky.social's Shadow of Mogg at Tuescon. One character bartered a curtain for a family sized bottle of strawberry calpol at the blanket fort at Paddington in order to restore his stiff upper lip, then immediately failed the next roll and spiraled into Anxiety.

A character sheet for Shadow of Mogg. It features doodles of tinned beans, a rat, the TARDIS, a mutated praying mantis in a hi viz jacket, a broken pair of glasses, a blanket fort, and an XL bottle of calpol.

TTRPG design tip - reveal your GM mechanics through player facing abilities to reinforce the GM using them rather than ignoring them, think reaction rolls, random encounters checks, morale etc as basic examples.
