It's because "mearls" is the most common fuckup by speedrunners when we try to put the password in. The floating animation of the box has a minor frustration where jumping once can activate it twice, and we're most likely to experience this on the first box without noticing

"Fade from black" is already a standalone command that doesn't do individual palette routines like this, so maybe it was a building block for something else! What happens in Mario's room is the same effect that turns magikoopa from red to blue when you defeat him, just applied to a different target.

Oh wow, I posted this in 2023? I thought it recent. In the smrpg modding discord we only figured out how palette row fade scripts work a few months ago! I made a custom build of lazy shell that previews this effect in the level editor, one day I'll fix everything else that's broken in that build 🥲

In Super Mario RPG, Mario's house is made out of pure darkness by default, and every object inside it is only colored in manually by a script when Mario enters. This is the only area in the game that works like this, for an unknown reason.
