When the europhobes attack the euro, we defend the euro. When they say, “ah but Britain would have to join the euro”, we say “and Britain would get to join the euro”. Let’s stop ceding the ground, and attack them on their arguments. High press.

This is obviously correct. The US has an enormous single market. Ours (the EU’s - I am a citizen) is incomplete and fragmented. Let’s make it whole.

The sale of the Telegraph earlier this year may be seen, in retrospect, as the key that unlocked a proper conversation about Brexit.

Sounds a bit like David Davis’s strategy of getting on the phone to “Paris” and “Berlin” to sort it all out in an afternoon…. How did that go?

I take your point and your scepticism. But at least he is encouraging us to have the conversation - and making clear Brexit has failed. This is progress and may lead to more. Agree with you that a positive “why the EU is a Good Thing / Britain is European” in its own right is still missing.

Our future lies in a stronger deeper partnership with the EU? Any way to make that sentence shorter, more meaningful and more accurate? How about “Our future lies in the EU”?

This is - as usual - excellent. But it stands out this fortnight as being particularly depressing. A government with no sense of urgency. As if, having ditched Starmer for Burnham, it’s done its part. Yet it hasn’t even started on Europe, ethno-nationalism, democracy or geopolitics.

Maybe I do, maybe I don’t. But I think it’s quite hard work to get offended by “Perfidious Albion” today, unless I suppose one were actually responsible for UK foreign policy and the term were being used to denigrate it now.

We need to hear contrition for Brexit's having shattered the West, the glee which so many of his colleagues greeted our suffering, and the rampant Europhobia still present And we need to see him say he will *support* Europe as the best hope for a critical mass of democracies working together Ends

To me it just conveys that British foreign policy, particularly in the C19th, was not thought particularly trustworthy by other nations.

That thug sabotaging rescue efforts, racist riots, flags on lampposts, pink ladies wanting to burn down hotels, doxxing charity workers, ICE-style deportation plans, threats to scrap the Equality Act and leave the ECHR… “legitimate concerns” No. A tornado of hate and prejudice set off by Farage.

So the favourite obsession of the far right, being weaponised by US billionaires to push us towards their technofascist dystopia, is repeatedly legitimised by a Labour government. Other concerns, including the longstanding concerns of the left, are vilified and delegitimised.

Amazing speech by Carney to the European Parliament - free movement, common market, ... Not hard to see how his stint as Chairman of the Bank of England through the worst of the Brexit years influenced him. Well done Brexit and Trump for achieving what I never thought would be possible.

At what point does the Government go: Brexit was a mistake, we need to join the EU?
020
Josh Sherer @pickle1805.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
So - we have a situation where Brexit has a recognised economic cost; those costs are getting greater as the EU develops its own sovereign (ahem) economic policies; and the government faces a ‘headache’ of having to pay for defence spending.

“Treasury officials said Healey wanted to reduce the economic impact of Brexit and build closer ties with the EU, but not at any cost to the UK.” Do they hear themselves? Maybe read the quotes they’re giving to journalists and think:- hold on, what are we doing? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

They haven’t processed yet that we left. They still think that, “really”, Britain is the most importsnt country in Europe. And also that the EU is a temporary phenomenon but Berlin, Paris are what count.

We know with certainty that Brexit was a disaster, and now while Canada negotiates associate membership with the EU, Britain is stuck on the sidelines of its own continent. Hopefully this will be the moment our government stops dragging its feet and finally rethinks our relationship with Europe.2/2
