i graduated law school in 1999 with $60k debt. The loans paid full tuition & books at state college. I got $300/mo from my parents and that covered my share of the rent with 1 other roommate. My kid’s school costs $215 per credit hour for in state undergrad, almost $900/hr out of state. Crazy.

It’s soooo much more expensive now. I have friends with a Kid in dental school that say they expect him to graduate with $500k in debt. And he’s going to a state school in the Midwest, not even a big name college.

I first saw that commmercial during ESPN’s coverage of Hou vs. UCF, so it made sense. I saw it today again on YouTube’s Sunday Ticket coverage of Eagles v. Rams. And I’m in FL, for reference. They are terrified. Good.

But as a first in my family college kid, I didn’t fully understand how the interest would accrue to the point that I was never, ever, going to be able to pay off the full balance. Thankfully, my kid doesn’t have that problem with scholarship, etc, but idk how poor kids can go to college. Disgusting

When my loans were forgiven in 2021, I had a remaining balance of $59k. Hubs remaining balance was $47k. So yeah. I’m grateful for the education & the fact I met my husband in school. But the way the system runs really puts people in a terrible situation. I always intended to repay the loans. 4/

I paid the private Sallie Mae loan off after 10 years at $275/ months. I paid 500/mo for almost 20 years. Husband did the same with his $100k+ in loans, same period, until COVID hit. As govt employees we finally qualified for forgiveness. I paid over $120k in that 20 years on $60k principal. 3/

That was higher than other first years in our rural town. Only option to not pay $1200/mo was forebearance. I pushed the loans off for 3 yrs until I could make payments. By then, my loan total was way over $100k. They finally offered a consolidation program with 30 year repayment schedule. 2/

I financed my education with subsidized & unsubsidized federal loans & one Sallie Mae loan In the 90s. Very little scholarship $. $14k after undergrad & $60k after law school. 10 yr repayment was $1200/mo. My first job out of law school was $26k per year. $1500/month after taxes. 1/
