Regular reminder that JG Ballard’s final novel, “Kingdom Come” (2006), is about a far-right English town which creates their own militarised breakaway state in a shopping mall, where they worship the gods of St George and consumerism. Old JG wrote it as tongue-in-cheek satire. At the time.

When the Spanish Civil War started in 1937 the Left Review asked writers if they were for the Republic or Franco. 148 replied inc. Wells, Beckett, Waugh, Crowley, Eliot. With its limited word count, hot takes and trolling (Beckett, 3rd pic) this pamphlet feels like early 20thC social media!! (1/2)

Here's a little more info from IAPSOP (International Association for the Preservation of Occult Periodicals): This was the organ of the School of Universal Philosophy and Healing ("SUPH") organized in 1946 by the medium Gladys Spearman-Cook (Violet Gladys Isabella Gardner Spearman Cook, 1900-1982).

Here's an obscure book from a forgotten countercultural voice. 'Kienholz 1960/1970' Edward Kienholz was a US installation artist/sculptor. Reviled at home and loved in Europe. A fantastically grim set of assemblages and also a tactile feast with its leather cover and metal spine and back cover.
