Let's mess up a book title by changing or adding a word. I'll start: "Frankenstein's Wi-fi" #writing #booksky

1 of 2. Can someone explain this to me? Friendly DM received from an author who wanted to chat. Asks about my work, suggests we swap book links to Amazon. He has a gazillion reviews on Amazon, I have one (!)... #writingcommunity #writesky

This is such an important piece. What's happening to film criticism - and so quickly - is deeply saddening.
Extract from Robert Daniels' piece on the Locarno Film Festival, and on the fate of film criticism.

Walking through Dublin City Centre at night is strangely uncomfortable for me considering I'm in the city centre every day for work. When you don't drink, alcohol culture comes across a ugly and intimidating. Tried helping a drunk guy who fell three times (at 7pm) but he just told me to F Off.

😡 Yet again, undervaluing critics and criticism. So stupid imho. Criticism is fun to read for anyone! Biz stories about Hollywood not so much!

I love Animal Farm, but it makes me cry as I relate to Boxer. I agree with this article's sentiment that it "is an eternal warning against political leaders who hijack potentially noble movements for their own selfish purposes." #booksky www.theguardian.com/books/2025/a...

This morning, I'm writing Lecture 10 for my series on the Inklings from The Great Courses. The topic? Charles Williams. Come on, Higgins: You should be able to write this one in your sleep, with one hand tied behind your back, backwards, & in high heels. #Inklings #CharlesWilliams #TheOddestInkling

Soar 3/3 See images or philipcliveminty.com/i-wroted-a-p... This bit begins: or better still colour me adorable, nerdy cool, (beyond the pale, reproductively speaking), and so on and so forth, whatever proves you right, #poetry #writing #poem #writingcommunity

‪ Soar 2/3 (see images or visit philipcliveminty.com/i-wroted-a-p...) #poetry #poem #writing #writingcommunity
Poem 2/3: but lift forces
and aerofoil cross-sections
and stress factors
and lightweight alloys
and avionics,
these things are dull
and quite aside from this
to dwell on one thing is dull,
whereas
to be buffeted here and there,
on Alfred's topmost froth,
this is well-rounded
this is interesting,
and now by all means,
proceed to pathologise
the plane wing is inhumanly predictable
(you predictably say),
and poses fragile me no threat,

Soar 1/3 I had a bash at a poem. (see images or visit philipcliveminty.com/i-wroted-a-p...) It begins: i am interested in plane wings which makes me boring, because interesting things are where you went on holiday with other people who went on holiday #poetry #poem #writing #writingcommunity
Poem: i am interested in plane wings
which makes me boring,
because interesting things are
where you went on holiday
with other people who went on holiday
that your toddler does things
that other toddlers do,
(only much better),
the normative responses
of someone you slept with,
your personal opinions
which uncannily mirror
those of your demographic,
all these things are interesting,

Review of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Madly romantic, magnificently overdone, and more themes than a lisping dressmaker (I'm copyrighting that gag). Check it out: philipcliveminty.com/book-review-... #Literaturesky (is it literature??) #Booksky

2 of 2. Dickens continues: "Behind dingy blind and curtain, in upper story and garret, skulking more or less under false names, false hair, false titles, false jewellery, and false histories, a colony of brigands lie in their first sleep." #BleakHouse #CharlesDickens

1 of 2: Chapter 26 from Bleak House. What a great way to start the chapter and set the scene. 'Sallow face' conjures the sulphurous atmosphere of industrial London. #BleakHouse #CharlesDickens

Dickens makes me laugh. In Bleak House, milquetoast Mr. Snagsby is under the formidable thumb of Mrs Snagsby. In the two words, 'unchallengeable reality', the author tells us so much about the poor man's life. #BleakHouse #CharlesDickens

Especially liked this: "I have come to the café to have A breakdown in a public place: It seems to be going really well." Bleak but fab.

This is why I read Dickens: "Jo lives—that is to say, Jo has not yet died—in a ruinous place known to the like of him by the name of Tom-all-Alone’s." Dickens isn't known for his economy of expression, yet here, in the first eleven words, he encapsulates the tragedy of Jo's existence. #BleakHouse

Jean Brodie Pt 2: "...The warning [of Jean Brodie] is that fascism comes clothed in noble aspect and purpose. It can be magnificent as Jean Brodie’s profile, as uplifting as her eulogies on art and beauty." See v long review here: bit.ly/44tpo7o My first ever hashtags: #Literaturesky #Booksky

I’m a long-standing inhabitant of the planet, but completely new to social media. I love reading and reviewing books. On more upbeat days - despite sales-based evidence - I call myself a writer. I’d love to chew the fat about writing and talk to readers of 19th & 20th century fiction.
