10 years ago today GOP Sen. Mike Lee: “If anyone spoke to my wife, or my daughter…the way Mr Trump has spoken to women, I wouldn’t hire that person, wouldn’t want to be associated with that person, and I certainly don’t think I’d be comfortable hiring that person to be the leader of the free world”

i also read his op ed on originalism in the WSJ and i would love to know how presidential criminal immunity emerges from the structure of the constitution, especially when the literal authors of that constitution insisted that a president could he tried and even straight up executed

someone please give dems the line: "the function of democracy is accountability. when politicians use the excuse that their hand was forced by politics, that is a signal that it is our duty to punish them. it is accountability now that strengthens future hands against organizational incompetence"

an important distinction is that AI is _not_ a similarly bounded innovation. it's not "codegen gets cheaper; let's expand the surrounding bottlenecks". it's closer to "bottlenecks themselves get generally cheaper to expand, and codegen is the current one".

lol I wouldn't say I'm an optimist; it's the private equity that holds the power and in-fact enacts the problematic results. my point is: let's not mistarget the enemy. we want MORE economists with LOUDER voices, and MORE people learning about economics. what we want LESS of is acquiescence to PE.

oh, I don't think an economist _would_ say "that's a _better_ use of capital". I think they'd say "that's a predictable result given the incentives of capital". I think they'd say "the inevitability of this horrible outcome warrants modification to the free market".

are you talking about "economists"? or do you mean "venture capitalists"? if you're unsure, a tell might be: if they're an economist, they _don't_ have boatloads of money

Rees-Mogg does an excellent job. I'd love to think that people seeing this generally see Tucker blatantly engaging in attempts to flirt with nazi supremacy "without having to overtly admit it", but I don't think many will. it's sad when I feel no way to make what is clearly happening, understood. :(

One thing about this gutter racism is the ongoing dropping of the facade that this was ever about anything other than gutter racism – their "fundamental preference" for having fewer non-white people around.
Jonathan Keeperman on X: This week, @christopherrufo tackle the Indian Question.

Among other things, this episode cuts to the heart of longstanding foundational political disputes that are simply unreconcilable, but which can longer be brushed aside. Namely that some people (perhaps most people) prefer to live in a homogenous society, and as America tips toward a majority-minority country, that fundamental preference is under threat.

That article was fascinating, thx for the share. It sucks, because I think 1. “let’s examine intellectual failure modes”, 2. “let’s take seriously the task of doing good in the world”, and 3. “AI needs serious oversight” are extremely in need of a public movement. How to shed the rest?

“add feature, fix bugs” covers a lot of highly payed labor. the perspective that I am engaging with (and yes: interested in showing to be wrong) is: “dumber than a mosquito”. any job is “formulaic” if you count the ability to generally process information. I’m not the one acting in bad faith.

It is a challenge to articulate the part of the problem space it cannot perform, articulating it often reveals it to not be a line the tech fundamentally can’t cross, and the space continues to shrink. I don’t think it’s controversial at this point to say: let’s consider if it gets a bit better

I don’t see the distinction you are reporting so clearly in my work (also a software developer). I can throw complex problems at it (“add a new weapon to my game”), ill defined problems (“why does the menu feel slow? fix it”), etc… and it solves them 100x faster and cheaper than me.

this thread starts w/ TC saying "we have the autonomy to say no". for the collective "we", that ability is similarly not a step function. the further fragmented we get, and the deeper the tendrils of incentives on behalf of the AI institutions get, the _less_ autonomy we have to say no.

phild3.bsky.social @phild3.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
nope, I'm not assuming anything "godlike". but: we already want to to hit the "kill switches", and cannot. the issue is that these "keys/kill switches/earplugs" are not the step functions your analogy assumes. they're nebulous institutions that can be piecewise selected for compliance.

(btw, I think you replied to the wrong thread, but that's fine) the issue is, then, that people are in _already_ giving it access to its "keys". are you then _not_ "trivially resolving this panic", but instead affirming it?
