The design uses an 1785 watercolour by Sarah Stone showing the interior of Sir Ashton Lever’s Museum in Leicester Square, London: a dark green natural-history collection crowded with display cabinets, birds, shells, antlers and other specimens, with green curtains opening onto receding galleries and a large elephant on the right. Four online seminars are listed: Sadiah Qureshi, 6 October; Christoffer Basse Eriksen, 28 October; Jim Endersby, 25 November; and Ma. Mercedes G. Planta, 9 December. The underlying assumption is that budget allocations in universities are ideologically neutral: that institutional investment just goes to wherever lots of students choose to spend their time. But this is not how it works. Admin decide what forms of knowledge they want to incentivize.

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.

AI has exposed the austerity con game in higher ed. For years, we have been told there is no money for students, faculty, staff, capital improvements, libraries. But somehow universities have suddenly come up with the money to pay for AI services??

GFY! (from the @chronicle.com)
I get it. You hate AI. You think it destroys human capacities and the environment while also undermining critical aspects of humanities research and teaching. But if you care about your students and the future of the humanities, those objections are not sufficient. You need to engage with AI, understand both its appeal and its limitations, and integrate that awareness into your teaching.

Kind of hard for a professional organization to argue that history is integral to democracy when it goes to lengths to quash democracy within its own membership. And this isn't what I want my members dues to be used for. I suspect many will feel the same. 🗃️
If the AHA leadership continues to heed that advice, its members can expect further silencing of their voices within the organization. In addition to recommending that the AHA frame the historical profession as an arm of the “national security” apparatus, Thorn Run has told its leadership that it should reroute “all future requests for public statements,” “all member concerns regarding conflict zones,” and “all concerns regarding historians in conflict zones” to a leadership committee, so that it can contain and control “out-of-scope debates.” The aim, in other words, is to “utilize the January 2026 veto as a safe harbor precedent to prevent future mission-creep” by shifting from vetoes to a place where institutional silence ensures that there is nothing to veto.
