A Brennan Center poll this year found a wide and bipartisan desire for politicians to do something about corruption in government. Will they listen? bit.ly/4zE44KL

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

No, they're saying they created $11B in economic activity over 3 years via their renewable investments. I would also take that estimate with a big grain of salt.

Florida is about to run a real-time experiment by kicking out immigrant workers. Spoiler: everyone loses. ⁣ ⁣ Kick them out and you don't just lose labor, you lose the people buying stuff that keeps other people employed.⁣ ⁣

At best, Schumer is setting up to nibble around the edges, protect funding for Israel (and probably not Ukraine btw) then fold anyway. In reality, without a new War Powers Act with teeth, the Pentagon budget needs to be cut in half to help prevent presidential abuse.

Wealthy areas use the same zoning codes and permitting procedural hurdles to keep affordable housing out of their neighborhoods that NIMBYs use to oppose so-called gentrification. Self-styled class warriors had better educate themselves to stop entrenching neighborhood segregation and inequality.

My problem is centrism becomes entirely about style not substance. I'm open to centrists who are actually pragmatic - identify problems and solve them evem if they step on ideological toes, but more important entrenched interests. But it seems centrists lack pragmatism the most.

You need to break out social vs. economic issues. Populist issues are popular in these states, but the Democratic brand is so associated with culture war issues it either pulls focus or prevents electable candidates from advancing from the primary.

The easiest way to deal with this is lifting the income cap for payroll taxes as Bernie Sanders has proposed for at least a decade now. Every month or year we wait, the harder it's going to be to pull the fund back into a solvent path.

DCCC is horrible. If they're interested in the majority they need to stop wasting money in the primaries, especially when they drive factional wars against progressives.

Going back to Reynolds v. Sims, the Supreme Court dismissed arguments in favor of one man, one vote based on the 'republican form of government' clause. But gerrymandering is so egregious and offensive to the principle of citizens choosing their representatives I think it needs renewed attention.

I'm not sure getting oneself elected as the leadership of one's party in a chamber of Congress is 'by default' getting thrust into the position of standard-bearer. It's more damning that Congressional Democrats chose to vote for those jokers.

Uhh he's running against the Republican in the general. It makes no sense for him to run as a liberal R in the R primary. The best hope is to consolidate voters from the left, center, and center right and maybe persuade some people even if he does lose.

I don't care if the Nebraska Democratic Party put up a Democrat. That's what they do, sure. But until Dems can get people to vote Dem in Nebraska, this is the best shot at getting someone better into the Senate. Even 30% voting with Dems is better than 0% now.

Politicians absolutely deserve our scrutiny because they hold our power. That's all I demand. But I also demand an informed and substantive examination of their records and words. If you won't accept rational explanations and sincere apologies you're part of the problem with our politics.

We do. In a democracy citizens matter more than politicians, who have teams of professional staff to inform and advise them, and I happen to think a person's life experience is not just a valid qualification but a necessary one.

pettilabel.bsky.social @pettilabel.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
I completely disagree. Words and ideas are necessary for judgment against a politician's track record and they're the entire point of a democracy. And what I love about ours is that it's open to normal people - i.e. veterans and oyster farmers - and not just members of an entrenched class.

He's substantively right on the issues, he's apologized which virtually no other politician does today, and he's able to discuss these issues like a human being. Qualities entirely lacking in most of our politicians and which help connect to voters skeptical of social liberalism. So yes Platner.

pettilabel.bsky.social @pettilabel.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
The Platner test on here kind of proves that too many so-called progressives are just interested in a performative, self-gratifyiny symbolic exercise and can't even be bothered to engage in the substance of the issues and people they claim to care about.
