We often mention the ~40,000 who die every year from car crashes and that is certainly tragic. But 3 *MILLION* people incur injuries requiring medical attention due to car crashes every year. Presumably 100s of thousands have life-altering injuries. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

I just resold some concert tix on Ticketmaster for the first time. Pretty impressed with how easy it was. I couldn't even find anyone to give the tix away to so even if I'm only getting 60% of the money back, that's better than 0.

Since Allstate was so much cheaper, I increased some of my coverages and will still save $500 for the year!

It's definitely worth doing some comparison shopping for insurance at least once a year. Maybe their risk modeling changed or maybe my specific risk profile has changed for some reason?

I just learned that I'll save ~$800 on my home insurance by switching from Liberty Mutual to Allstate. LM wasn't expensive--every year when my policy is up for renewal, I get a few other quotes to compare. Allstate's premium just went down A LOT this year, at least for me.

Anecdotally, in accidents/crashes where a car is *not* involved, I know of more people getting seriously injured on e-scooter than bike. I think e-scooters are just more accident-prone due to the small wheels, narrow platform, and high speeds.

peter k @peterskim.org · 29/09/2026
It’s strange how e-scooters are still largely unregulated. I believe we need more mobility alternatives to cars, but I’ve always thought the design of e-scooters is inherently more dangerous than bikes. www.inquirer.com/transportati...

The Ed Sheeran / Macklemore situation really disturbed me, not because I had an issue with Sheeran not supporting the Palestinian cause. It's more about free expression and it's a high profile example of how free expression is being gradually suppressed.

I got a few responses from my emails to Philadelphia city council members about the Eagles and the city's silence in Macklemore being cancelled from Ed Sheeran's tour. Councilmember O'Rourke's office was kind enough to call me to talk through it. I sent them @willbunch.bsky.social's article.

Yes! Image a future where parents put their kids in driverless cars to take them to school while they themselves get in different cars to go to work. Instead of one or two cars chaining trips, now you might have four separate cars making four separate trips. Would be a disaster at scale.

Is it worth getting a sewing machine? I’ve had like 3 relatively new tshirts have their stitching come undone in the past year. Never had that happen before. Presumably a result of enshittification. 😢 I’ll probably just take these to my local cleaners to get fixed.

And there are a lot of liberal arts colleges I've never heard of that are ranked higher than these 5. I know they've been tweaking their methodology, but maybe my perception of these schools' reputations are stuck in the 90s. 😁
000
peter k @peterskim.org · 23/09/2026
It surprises me to see some schools I thought had a strong reputation get lower rankings than I expected. For liberal arts, Oberlin and Reed are ranked 59 and 60 respectively this year. Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Mt Holyoke are ranked 26, 31, and 34. I thought all these schools would be top 20.

peter k @peterskim.org · 23/09/2026
So the new US News and World Report college rankings are out and even though I'm not one to believe rankings are everything, I do think school reputation matters when looking for a job and rankings are a proxy (albeit imperfect) for that, especially in a tough job market for college grads.

It’s sad that US stadiums are almost all surrounded by a sea of car parking. Compare to UK stadiums where almost none of them have visible car parking around stadium. Even stadiums in small/medium cities which presumably have worse transit than London don’t have parking! youtu.be/Rlm4aoyEq8o?...

A lot of Americans live in suburban and rural areas that are much more homogeneous, and for them, college is when they get introduced to people who are different from them. But in Philly, we have the gift of being able to give our kids that experience earlier.
000
peter k @peterskim.org · 22/09/2026
If you're a parent in Philadelphia and forgo sending your kids to a public school, you are seriously depriving your children of what is likely a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can fundamentally shape their worldview.
100
peter k @peterskim.org · 22/09/2026
As they become adults, their lives will become increasingly segregated and homogeneous. There are very few colleges and universities as diverse as many of the elementary, middle, and high schools are in Philly. And once they work, it'll likely become even less diverse.
110
peter k @peterskim.org · 22/09/2026
Parents in Philadelphia should consider themselves *fortunate* to be able to send their kids to public schools. There will likely be no other time in their kids' lives when they'll have the opportunity to spend their day and even make friends with people from diverse backgrounds. It is a gift.

My kids learn more about being a good citizen and a good human from having friends who are of different religions, races, ethnicities than they’d ever learn from textbooks. How can you expect kids who go to school where everyone is the same to have any real empathy for those who are different?
010
peter k @peterskim.org · 22/09/2026
If we want any hope in fixing the shitshow our country is in, we need more people to want that for their children as the top priority. We’ve forgotten the importance of the role of public school as a central civic institution in our communities.
110
peter k @peterskim.org · 22/09/2026
As a parent, the best thing you can do for your children is to put them in environments where they have classmates and friends who come from different socio-economic backgrounds. They will become empathetic to different perspectives and be better equipped to thrive in a diverse society.

There’s a Reddit thread where everyone seems to be dismissing the Philly public schools as being too technology focused. It’s not ideal, but it’s also not terrible, depending on the teachers. There are actually a lot of great teachers in the district who don’t let tech get in the way.

peter k @peterskim.org · 22/09/2026
Rich white parents get concerned about overuse of technology in schools. They should be more concerned about their kids growing up in a bubble where everyone else is rich and white. Choosing private schools may solve some issues but raising your kids in an elitist bubble does more harm.

Yes, have respect for people and cultures that came before you and that are still here. Don't be an asshole. Contribute to your community. Be a good neighbor. But "I've lived here for X years and therefore I am more authentically of this place" is not a competition anyone can win.

Scapegoating outsiders and people who look different from us is a tale as old as time. Blaming immigrants and outsiders for economic and social problems has been proved to be misguided time and time again. We need to stop with the "transplant" nonsense.
110
peter k @peterskim.org · 21/09/2026
Denigrating "transplants" is inherently unwelcoming behavior which goes against everything I believe America is and should be. We saw this with interviews with foreign tourists during the World Cup who constantly mentioned how hospitable Americans are despite disagreement with our govt's policies.
110
peter k @peterskim.org · 21/09/2026
My beef with people negatively referring to others as "transplants" is that it's rooted in othering and scapegoating. There is nothing good in making generalizations about a group of people just because they weren't born there. It's completely illogical and says more about your own prejudices.
120
peter k @peterskim.org · 21/09/2026
I think and hope we've moved on from peak anti-"transplant" progressive NIMBY rhetoric where people would try to argue that you should not move into "gentrifying" neighborhoods and thus be part of the "problem".

peter k @peterskim.org · 21/09/2026
At the end of the day, it's the kids who lose. These old timers organized the vast majority of the events and budget towards the high school grades, even though they make up only 30-40% of the overall school population. We "transplants" disengaged from trying to do anything good for the school.
010
peter k @peterskim.org · 21/09/2026
We got people at the SDP to intervene in their refusal to hold elections. The old timers agreed to hold elections but put up puppet candidates while disparaging us "transplants" behind our backs. Absolutely disgusting behavior from these sad people trying to hold on to power in an HSA of all things!
110
peter k @peterskim.org · 21/09/2026
A few years ago, parents at a South Philly school wanted to get more involved in the HSA. We learned the same folks have been running the HSA for years, even people who no longer have kids there! When we asked about when elections happen, they accused us of being NY transplants trying to take over.
110
peter k @peterskim.org · 21/09/2026
People who rant about "transplants" think they're entitled to more power just because they've lived there longer. Unfortunately for them, that's not how democracy works; or it's not how it should work. Everyone gets 1 vote regardless of how long they've lived there, how much they make, etc.

Anti-transplant folks tend to be more accepting of "immigrants" because immigrants are poorer and aren't as engaged politically which allows them and their interests to stay in power.
