Living the car-free dream in Philly. Philly public school parent. Brompton Bicycles are the ultimate urban life hack. I mostly talk about Philly stuff.

My local neighborhood public elementary school (K-8) is Fannie Jackson Coppin, formerly known as Andrew Jackson. It's seen some incredible demographic shifts over just the past ~12 years. White students increased from 16% to 48%, while the % of Hispanic, Black, and Asian students all declined.

Tons of Ed Sheeran tix available for $32. Prices have been falling throughout the day. Insane for a “superstar” musician’s stadium concert tix to be at this price. Guess he didn’t think through the consequences of his choices…

Proof of my commitment to my kids and their friends, good fresh bagels, and biking in the rain! 😂

I need to get bagels for my kid’s friends who are sleeping over and it’s raining really hard. Most folks would’ve avoided this by buying bagels in advance but for me, that’s being a bad host by serving bagels that weren’t baked that day. Glad I’ve got a @cleverhood.bsky.social! 😂

I biked from my home in South Philly to West Philly to meet a friend at her home, then biked together to 69th St. She said she’d never biked to 69th St to take the NHSL before even though it’s only a 13 minute ride. If you want to help someone bike more, offer to be their bike buddy!

These little trains are so cute. Not good for bikes though. Our Sat morning 8:20am train had 4 bikes, not including my folder. It was surprisingly full! Seems like they need to run these more frequently.

The IB History class teaches how to analyze and think critically in a multidisciplinary approach. E.g. They’ll study protest and change by looking at feminism in the US and revolution in Tunisia. Lots of reading original sources and writing papers.

Every year I go to back to school night, I’m always so impressed with my kids’ teachers at Central High School. And this year, my older son is starting a 2 year IB diploma program which is even more impressive. I’m a huge fan of the IB program over the à la carte AP approach.

Four days of car rental cost $265, including all taxes, fees, and liability insurance. I get a special corporate discount rate from work and car rentals in Philly are cheaper than NYC. I’m also lucky to have 2 car rental places within 2 blocks of my house despite not living “downtown”.

High gas prices are also relatively meaningless to me when this is my entire gas expense for the month. Drive less, walk/bike/transit more. Save money, save the planet.

peter k @peterskim.org · 08/09/2026
If you don’t need to drive to work and live in a walkable area with good transit, you probably don’t need a car. Rented a car for 4 days over the Labor Day weekend. Went to a bluegrass festival and did a Costco and H-Mart run. This will be the only time I use a car for the month.

I borrowed this book from the library a few months ago but I didn’t really understand it. But having the context of being at a bluegrass festival and playing in some jam sessions helps this book make a lot more sense.

I got my Taylor 310CE in 2000 and chose a dreadnought style because that seemed the most “normal”. They’ve discontinued a lot of their dreadnoughts, but I’m glad I still have one since it’s considered the preferred shape for bluegrass.

I was trying to avoid buying more tshirts at the bluegrass festival but I couldn’t resist getting this one from Tuba Skinny.

We’re getting to a level of paranoia around Flock cameras where people will start asking if these are surveillance cameras and microphones.

I’m at the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival this weekend in South Jersey. Music has been great; also taking a bluegrass jam class. It’s almost all white. Of the 100s of people here, I’ve only seen 3 Asian people (including my friend and me). But I don’t blame the organizers at all.

Ok that makes sense. I keep forgetting all Regional Rail lines go through 30th Street--the benefit of through running! Sorry my Center City bias in effect here. :) This new map actually does a great job including 30th St as one of the core 3 stations. wwww.septa.org/wp-content/u...

We need to do more dark trail rides for @wednightrides.org! My first time in Tacony Creek Park--so nice, even in the dark. Thanks @zajic.com for leading and coming up with the route!

Biked to donate blood today @americanredcross.bsky.social. They’re doing a special giveaway—a Hello Kitty plushie! Plus they had a new snack I haven’t seen before. Delicious!

I had to go from South Philly to NE Philly yesterday, so I took the @septaphilly.bsky.social Trenton Line plus Pennypack Trail to get there. On the way back, I took the Boulevard Direct bus, L train, and Delaware River Trail to get home. Multi-modal bike/train/bus trips are so much fun!

Our local politicians are celebrating this new playground but apparently no parent would want to take their kid to the playground at 10am (or earlier) on a Sunday morning. 🤷🤬

3 stops, 15 minutes from Welsh Rd to the L. It’d be nice if there was an L Express to zip people into Center City.

Who needs a 12 lane highway (Roosevelt Blvd) when you have a bus and a bike?

Another tiny segment of protected two way cycle track on Frankford Ave.

peter k @peterskim.org · 30/08/2026
Sadly it’s only good for a block to provide a safe connector on Torresdale Ave for the Pennypack trail. I guess that’s a good thing but perhaps commuters should also get premium bike infrastructure, not just trail users.

Holy crap. What is this beautiful two way protected cycle track in Holmesburg?

Regional Rail at Jefferson is needlessly confusing for people who don’t have a regular routine. If you come down the stairs to the entry level in between sections A and B, there are no signs telling you what lines go to each section. We just need this sign at the bottom of each of the steps.

Unless you’re a “digital nomad”, it’s hard these days to spend more than a few weeks traveling somewhere. The closest I’ve come to being able to experience being in a different place through four seasons is when I went to London for 3 and 6 month projects for work. I wish I could do that again.

There are *five* shows I want to go to during this one weekend in November. Sadly, I'll probably only make it to one.
11/15 - AJ Lee and Blue Summit, 118 North (Wayne, PA)
11/15 - Over the Rhine, Westminster Presbyterian Church, West Chester
11/14 - Charlie Parr, Milkboy
11/12 - Kate Stephenson and Lighthearted, Milkboy
11/12 - Coral Moons, Nikki Lopez

In Philly, my ideal 1 mile radius is probably centered at 9th and Bainbridge.

It'd be interesting to rank the best 1 mile square radii in the US. My 1 mile radius is not bad but there's a lot of Point Breeze I don't really care for. www.atlist.com/radius-map-t...

Why the Atlanta hate? Apparently only 8% agree with me that Atlanta is absolutely worth living in. Atlanta is a great city. And Omaha is super underrated for a small to medium sized city.

They have one for cities, but where I *would* live instead of where I have lived or visited. The blues are yes and absolutely Yellow is maybe Orange is probably not Red is hell no I have a lot of hell no in the south. The only one in the north is Bridgeport, CT. 😁

I'm annoyed by this map because it focuses on states. In the US, we overemphasize states. States are not the source of culture and identity--cities are. Rural and suburban white folks like emphasizing states because they'd be left out if we just talked about cities.

First day of school starts with a @septaphilly.bsky.social subway ride! 🚇 In Philly, there are lots of high schools adjacent to the Broad St Line—the subway is packed full of kids every morning and afternoon. The subway itself becomes a social third space where kids chat and make new friends.

SEPTA Regional Rail trains clearly are not made with bikes in mind. With a Brompton folding bike, it’s no problem.

Doing bike+train to Subaru Park. First time taking Regional Rail to Chester. I didn’t think I would ever do this but here I am. At least the train ride is free! If you have a monthly pass of any kind, all regional rail trips of any length on are free on the weekend!

Niche actually has a ranking of most diverse public high schools in the US and it's actually pretty accurate. It's very surprising to see where some of these schools are located though. The "most diverse" high school is a school in Anchorage, Alaska! www.niche.com/k12/search/m...

Or you could be like my alma mater, Evanston Township High School (Evanston, IL). I biked to/from school ~30 years ago. They've since added an amazing bike parking area and parking-protected bike lanes near the school! The ~3600 students live less than 2.5 miles away. There are public buses too.

What’s up with the place names on Apple Maps? It calls this sculpture in front of PAFA “World’s Largest Paint Brush”. Wtf. I filed a report to correct it to Paint Torch.
