they also have the nicest journal website. it's a shame the links to published papers take you to a typical hard-to-use publisher site

yes! 1940 and 1950 first -- going backwards will take more time because we need high quality scans first.

Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
conceptually, though they have fixed lots of errors and we add some fields that have never been transcribed (e.g., 1940 industry string) down the line we hope they can use our data!

Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
we're trying!!!

Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
aside: it's interesting that Google has basically the whole frontier for handwriting transcription in our application

Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
PS -- this is not a replacement for IPUMS! Their data is amazing, cleaned up, and available for all years. We are focusing on a pipeline to create open data that can be used by everyone to improve and expand existing datasets

Fair warning: many errors remain We built a checking interface here: opencensus.us/check You can help adjudicate tricky cells where models disagree and help inform our next run
100
Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Here's how the models are doing so far relative to their cost, both on the overall sample and in "hard" fields where context is key

Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Along the way, we will open source both our output and code. One result will be what we think is the largest open handwriting training dataset ever!
120
Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
So, we are starting a platform to create open-source transcriptions of the censuses. This will not be fast. Models are imperfect and even humans have a hard time reading some of these scans.
110
Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Until now! LLMs and local machine learning models are good at handwriting recognition and getting better every day
110
Peter Nencka 📊 @peternka.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Censuses are in the public domain after 72 years. But the scale of the data and computer limitations have made automatic transcription difficult

super cool. Trying to do something similar with some handwritten documents and so far have found closed models (Gemini family in particular) are dominating, though I haven’t tried these. Similar story here or are the open models the frontier?
