my favourite #tiff26 moment so far has been seeing @peterkapow.bsky.social on stage as the National Film Board of Canada logo to introduce a psychedelic fever dream of my 90s Politics OAC class - Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney for Midnight Madness.

The best thing about THE FACE OF HORROR is that it truly knows what it is and what it’s going for: broad acting, dolling out vengeance and embracing the art of costume making. #TIFF26

After the Year of ‘Obsession,’ TIFF’s 2026 Midnight Madness Lineup Promises a Scary-Good Bent Toward ‘Escalation’
Programmer Peter Kuplowsky walks IndieWire through a characteristically creative and varied lineup, which might have its own breakouts.

The individual tix weren’t redeemed enough as I recall. People would buy and only go to half. The pass has come back though. It’s just more expensive (tho still a relative discount) and a finite amount sold during an exclusive window in June - I understand it does sell out.

Curated by Peter Kuplowsky, the lead programmer of TIFF’s Midnight Madness slate, Midnight Dankness has come to be regarded as an unofficial pre-game to the Toronto International Film Festival (@tiffnet.bsky.social) where hypnotic vibes rule and fair-use satirization abounds.

Midnight Dankness has also commissioned RACOON CITY NIGHTS, a feature length remix that celebrates the monstrous mutations found in a classic Japanese survival horror video game series and their idiosyncratic movie adaptations.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney" may *sound* like the title of a Barry Avrich doc, but it's in Midnight Madness, so it's probably actually good: www.tiff.net/films/ladies...

Okay, there is no way I can do a Midnight Madness screening at TIFF, but I've got a bit of a project planned dealing with Malayalam horror (that is, if this year will just settle down), so of course this hit my radar. #DesiWatch variety.com/2026/film/fe...

Toronto 2026: Midnight Madness Drops Its Full Lineup. Duncan Jones! Anna Biller! Matthew Rankin! Na Hong-jin! Oh My!
With the capable and unpredictable curation of Peter Kuplowski and his team, the Midnight Madness sidebar at the Toronto International Film Festival continues to be one of the favourite parts of the festival at Screen Anarchy. The loaded line-up just dropped and it has some special treats in there, including the latest film from Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) opening Midnight Madness, and The Love Witch director, Anna Biller's follow up, The Face Of Horror (pictured above) closing the sidebar. For those who have never had the treat of a Matt Barats film or performance, I hope this is the dead pan auteur's coming out party. We have covered some of his previous work in Cash Cow, as well as the Reveries films. And Oscar-nominated... [Read the whole post on screenanarchy.com...]

MOVIE #10 is not TANK GIRL.
110
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #10’s cast is stacked; a who's who of comedians and character actors, quite literally rendered as you have never seen them before.
110
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #10 is an adaptation of source material that has been well-mined for movies, television and particularly video games. However, no adaptation has so authentically preserved its tone with such cultural specificity.

Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #9 is not NEAR DARK.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #9 is a genre hybrid, featuring a pretty common movie monster, but one not often featured in films from its country of production.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #9 features brutal martial arts action from a storied Indonesian fight coordinator, but this film is not Indonesian.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #8 is not MEMENTO.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I was such a fan of the director of MOVIE #8, I organized an entire evening dedicated to him, which included a double bill of two of his films.
200
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #8 is a return to form for a G-R-E-A-T genre filmmaker. It pays homage to his first five films, and even features the lead actor from those first five films.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #7 had me in tears of laughter; very much in the alt-comedy tradition that one might compare to Tim Robinson, but also Jon Wilson and Bo Burnham. Lil’ bit of NTBTSTM in there too now that I think of it.

Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
But there IS a documentary in the section this year--- have I already mentioned that---
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #7 is ostensibly a one-man movie, but it is not Ross McElwee’s SHERMAN’S MARCH. Nor is it entirely "strictly" a documentary…

Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #6 might be the dankest the main TIFF lineup has ever gotten.
110
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #5 is not Doug Liman’s GO.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #5’s title is derived from culturally specific slang from the film’s country of production.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #5 is like that one scene with Alfred Molina from BOOGIE NIGHTS, stretched to feature length and with a much higher body count.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #4 is not Pier Paolo Pasolini’s THEOREM.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #4 stars an actress that also features in another section of #TIFF26... one already announced. (REV THOSE SEARCH ENGINES!)
200
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Like the director’s last film, MOVIE #4 will draw some comparisons to THE TWILIGHT ZONE insofar as it also maps a high-concept horror over a paranoid morality drama.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #3 is not Nagisa Oshima’s DIARY OF A SHINJUKU THIEF; it is not even James Glickenhaus’ BLUE JEAN COP....
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #3 features at least two cameos by Midnight Madness alumni; one very recent, one who had a film feature in a MM lineup from the very early aughts.
100
Peter Kuplowsky @peterkapow.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
MOVIE #3 straddles two countries of production.
