I feel BUCKING FASTARD kinda fits nicely into Herzog’s repertoire of nature and humanity at odds with outsiders with little remorse. Nowhere near as entertaining as his previous films, but the Maras are kinda great. #TIFF26

Though a little too pat on its storytelling and resolutions, HAPPILY EVER AFTER is still a decent film about assuming what others regard as happiness without focusing on one’s own. #TIFF26

WILD HORSE NINE: Great banter, a superb Malkovich and, well, other good stuff too, but do you need more than those first two? #TIFF26

“In order to start, you need to give in to pessimism.” That’s only one of many standout bon-mots from THE PERVERT’S GUIDE TO UTOPIAS. And then you have the pairing of Jeanne Dielman with Iron Butterfly (it kinda works…). A fun frolic into philosophy. #TIFF26

My KORE-EDA fan-boy-ism has kicked in: I absolutely loved LOOK BACK. Taking its time luxuriating in its surroundings as well as the minute details & artistry of drawing and sketching, the film is warm, thoughtful and bittersweet without ever being cloying. #TIFF26

LA BOLA NEGRA uses its glorious photography and camera moves to bring some simple themes together through a complex story structure with quite wonderful results. I’m a sucker for anything that shouts to the rafters “live as your true self” without any preachiness. #TIFF26

There’s lots to like in THE JULIA SET (fractals in images, Anderson/Infiniti/Hoss/Bailey, solid humour, showing true support), which makes the not great stuff (the shitty dude who was see-through & the relationship stuff) all the more frustrating. They did the name Mandelbrot dirty too! #TIFF26

Sadly I found TREES ARE WATCHING no better than middling Blumhouse fare. #TIFF26

Leigh’s final film TENDER LOVING CARE is unsurprisingly deeply touching - in its character portrayals as well as its focus on empathy. Make a little effort to listen to others, your family, your friends and yourself. Gonna miss Leigh’s humanity… #TIFF26

POSSIBLE LOVE takes its time to lay out several different scenarios of how people covet: other partners, things, social status, power and control. Loved where it landed with the splicing of all the threads. #TIFF26

ARRESTED MEMORY is a bit like its central character: generally confused, really good at its job when it remembers what to do and not at all interested in tying up any loose ends. Mostly a fun time. #TIFF26

ASSASSIN(S) is a pretty solid rollicking political thriller until the last half hour when…it isn’t. It becomes a weighted down preachy melodrama with over the top screaming and an unsatisfactory epilogue. Some great stuff before that though! #TIFF26

AH GIRL definitely has charming, adorable and empathetic moments, but isn’t strong enough narratively or as an impressionistic work to really hold up for its full running time. #TIFF26

THE WORLD BEFORE is that kind of small stakes (though it may feel like BIG stakes for the young protagonists), finely detailed, seemingly effortlessly charming film that also provides a deep sense of place. Lovely. #TIFF26

A GOOD LITTLE SOLDIER might even be a bit TOO accurate in its depiction of certain corporate behaviors, but it’s always compelling, sometimes funny and makes me so very glad I’m retired…Alba Rohrwacher continues to climb in my estimation (she was already high up the list). #TIFF26

There were several moments during EVERYTIME where I was sure I had missed something - something to explain the unexplainable that happens later - but like the grief it portrays, there simply isn’t a simple or single way through it. The final 30-40 minutes will simmer with me for a long time. #TIFF26

DJINN WEDDING just couldn’t really deliver on its promises. Far too many silent stares into the distance from its characters with nothing coming from them… #TIFF26

MINOTAUR reimagines Chabrol in an even chillier tone with added layers pulling in wealthy privilege and useless sacrifice for those in power. Gorgeously frames and shot, the added layers help keep the interest over the “unfaithful wife” story. #TIFF26

If you’re a fan of films using dancing to express some kind of emotional catharsis or confusion (*raises hand*), you should love HA-CHAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY. Kikuchi pulls it all together with her presence on screen (and that smile!). #TIFF26

I could’ve listened to another 8 hours of stories, anecdotes, musings, arguments, theories and discussions of art by all the attendees in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM. Remarkable lives and remarkable characters. It also introduced me to Aaron Douglas’ work. Stunning. #TIFF26

Unsurprisingly LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, BRIAN MULRONEY is probably the most Canadian movie ever made. Nostalgic (certainly for me), funny as hell, creative, and pertinent as hell. The only un-Canadian thing about it is how unapologetic it is in its portrayal of its subject. #TIFF26

TOY GUN BANDIT is a little pile driver of a hand held movie as it whips you through the fun and not so fun consequences of one dumbass dude’s actions. Dumbass, but also kinda sweet. #TIFF26

INHERIT mostly feels like a middling late 90s-early 00s Asian Horror (with a few decent scares), but occasionally has an interesting cross-generational women’s story. Too much CGI and not enough dread. Still kinda fun at times? …and that question mark is intentional. #TIFF26

A TALENT FOR MURDER is a good deal of fun in a “who’s the cat and who’s the mouse?” kind of way. Mirren is fabulous of course. Immaculately shot as well. #TIFF26

NOBODY’S VIOLENCE is a fascinating piece of, well, cinema. I lost and refound my bearings about three or four times throughout it, was at times confused, fabricated my own answers to fill gaps and was engaged even when a bit sleepy. Wavelengths for the win. #TIFF26

JULIAN was quite lovely - just ask the grizzled dude next to me secretly wiping tears away at the end and the young girl in front of me who was dancing in her aisle. It’s best during its fantastical sequences that are chock full of imagination, colour and a smidge of wonder. #TIFF26

EVERYONE WANTS TO F*CK ME is a lot of things: a somewhat bland romcom that turns into an on-the-nose satire which morphs into pretty terrifying horror followed by a cynical yet sadly accurate end note. And to echo others, Jessica Henwick needs larger and broader roles.

It must be hard to confront that you aren’t and never will be who you thought you were. L’AUTRE feels like an honest and personal attempt to do that confrontation - even if it can be pretty ugly at times. #TIFF26

PURGATORY is a really charming sweet ode to those times when both kids and adults alike are a bit confused. Big John Hughes vibes without any overly silly humour - that worked in its favour since you just kept smiling…Ruby McGurrin is fantastic. #TIFF26

Though I’m not the biggest fan of Broadway music, the BIG drama of the songs in STUFFED actually work towards its darkest notes. There’s humour as well and both Comer and Melling seem to enjoy playing in that space. #TIFF26

LE FAUX SOIR is a solid caper thriller. Not quite as fun as The Sting or Great Escape, but with its many hurdles to jump and changes in plan, it has that feel at times. #TIFF26
