headed to the post office to mail some tapes (and one crappy tape player) to some friends in ann arbor and LA (and a stranger in ferndale)
A white-painted ledge against an old red brick wall, above a scuffed black floor. On the left sits a box for an "odeo" cassette player (AM/FM radio, recorder) with a cheerful pink plastic Walkman knockoff on the front and retro red, green and gold stripes down the side. Perched on top of the box and arranged around it are four clear cassette cases, each with a hand-painted J-card.

Top left, lying sideways: a field of greens in three vertical bands. There's dense forest-green brushwork like fish scales, a paler lime strip of short strokes, and dark green dabs marching over yellow like a crop row seen from a plane.

Top right, also sideways, the loudest of the bunch: a collage. Orange "$50" bank currency straps, one pasted upside down, bracket the corners. A vintage engraving of a reclining, twisting figure in green ink sits beside patches of red with green polka dots and navy with purple dots. Over it all is a slab of thick yellow paint that half-buries a typewritten poem. It opens with "typewriters. Enter this white room" and keeps drifting through lines about touch, mastery and blindness.

Bottom center, upright: hot pink and turquoise marbled together like a poured lava lamp, splotched with red and flecked with gold. A scrap of printed type peeks out along the top edge.

Bottom right, upright: deep ultramarine impasto churning like a night sea, slashed by rows of black diagonal dashes. Moody, heavy, and the best of the four.

corktown
This is a wide-angle, upward-looking shot dominated by sky. The top two-thirds is a sweep of wispy cirrus cloud that ends in a crisp, diagonal edge, with clean deep blue below it. A heavy black utility cable cuts across the top of the frame, along with a mast arm holding a hanging streetlight.

On the left is the C·P·A Building, a narrow five-story masonry building with a dentiled cornice, rows of small rosette ornaments, and a thin antenna on the roof. Almost every window is covered in weathered plywood, and only two still show glass or open frames. The wide lens makes it lean dramatically. At street level the arched bays are boarded up and covered with red-and-white "Vote Early" and "Built to Fight Back" posters. A green corner sign names the building, and green "Michigan" street signs hang nearby.

To the right, Michigan Avenue runs off toward an overpass lined with orange construction barrels. A white Ford Transit van and a white minivan are heading toward the camera beneath span-wire traffic lights (green) with "left turn only" signs. The right edge shows a grassy lot, trees just starting to turn yellow, a rusted-steel sculpture beside a low "Corktown" sign, a blank black billboard, and a distant white church steeple. The overall feel is bright early-autumn midday light over a half-vacant stretch of the neighborhood, with the boarded-up landmark set against a big sky.

i think about this a lot
Table comparing 160 acres farmed (corn, soy, wheat) versus leased to a solar developer, before income tax.

Income per acre: farming nets about $30–$200 after all costs; solar pays $300–$1,000, averaging $500–$700 nationally.

Total for 160 acres: farming about $5,000–$32,000; solar about $48,000–$160,000, or $80,000–$112,000 at the national average.

Best case: farming, a strong-price year on top soil; solar, $800–$2,500 per acre (up to $400,000) near tight transmission capacity, which is rare.

Stability: farming is volatile with prices, yields and input costs; solar is fixed once built, but only if the project is built.

Annual escalator: none for farming; typically 1.5%–2.5% for solar.

Your costs: farming means seed, chemicals, machinery, fuel, labor and land; solar is almost nothing, plus $500–$2,000 for an attorney review.

Before construction: solar pays only a small option fee, $10 to a few hundred dollars per acre, and many projects never get built.

Contract length: farming is one season; solar is 25–35 years, often with extensions.

sometimes shitty film and a shitty camera get it right #polaroid #photography
Black-and-white Polaroid of a young child with short, tousled blond hair, looking down with eyes nearly closed. The image is soft and blurred, as if the child moved during the exposure. The child wears a sleeveless dress with a bold floral pattern in dark and white. Behind them is a weathered brick wall with a string of café lights sagging across it and a multi-paned window at upper right. The right side of the frame is washed out to a pale cream glow, and small swirled chemical artifacts mark the print. A white starburst-like stain sits in the upper left corner.

ALT by ClaudeExtreme close-up Polaroid of a child's face, heavily blurred and overexposed so the image looks dreamlike. The child looks downward, with a dark smudge where the eyes are and the nose and mouth softly visible. Wisps of blond hair fall in dark, feathery streaks across the top and right of the frame. At lower left, a geometric diamond-lattice pattern on the child's clothing is the sharpest detail in the picture. Most of the frame fades to bright, creamy white, with faint rainbow-like chemical swirls near the bottom edge.

ALT by ClaudeBlack-and-white Polaroid of two stuffed animals sitting side by side on a tiled surface, both out of focus. In the foreground at left is a large, dark, plush teddy bear looking up and to the right, with a pale muzzle and dark nose. Beside it sits a smaller plush tiger with dark stripes on its arms, legs and tail, its head tilted upward as if watching something. Behind them, blown-out highlights show a white bucket or pot and other indistinct objects. The right side of the frame glows nearly white, and pale swirls of chemical residue mark the print.

RE: mastodon.social/@Robinbannks/117349… #nowplaying ! #steviewonder #songsinthekeyoflife
Songs in the Key of Life came out September 28, 1976, exactly 50 years ago. I’m holding up the gatefold sleeve, with its warm orange-and-amber sunburst of concentric, ragged-edged rings around a small pen-and-ink portrait at the center. The title curves along the inner ring and Stevie Wonder's name in flowing script below it. A round sticker in the upper left reads "Collector's Album, Includes Two Records, A Something's Extra Bonus Record, 24-Page Lyric Booklet." That's the original double LP plus the bonus 7-inch EP, which was the whole point of the "collector's album" pitch. [I have lost the booklet and EP #alas]

Behind it, the turntable is in the middle of playing one of the discs, with a yellow-and-red Tamla label visible and the tonearm resting on the record. The player looks like a Marantz full-automatic. To the left, a shelf is stuffed with records and 45s, and up top there's a City of Ann Arbor, Michigan medallion among some challenge coins on the ledge.

Because I am known to write using a fountain pen on paper, a number of people have pointed me to this post and its underlying research. i bought some records on ebay. i have always wanted the köln concerts! and this sinatra record is fabulous. #vinyl #OldVinyl #vinylrecords #jazz #sinatra #KeithJarrett #miles #milesdavis #franksinatra #jazz
Keith Jarrett, "The Köln Concert" (ECM 1064/65) — the classic minimal ECM design: cream background, plain black text with the title, and a black-and-white photo of Jarrett in profile, head bowed and absorbed at the piano, wearing a patterned-cuff shirt.

ALT by ClaudeMiles Davis, "Miles Ahead" (Columbia CL 1041, this pressing electronically rechanneled for stereo, CS 8633) — orchestra under Gil Evans, "Miles Davis + 19" noted on the cover. Photo shows Miles mid-performance on trumpet, close-up and intense. The jacket has visible wear — soft/worn corners and edges, some scuffing on the cardboard.

ALT by ClaudeFrank Sinatra, "Put Your Dreams Away" (Columbia CL 1136) — a striking close-up black-and-white/sepia-toned profile shot of Sinatra's face in dramatic side lighting, title in orange/pink text at the top. There's an ownership sticker in the corner reading "I belong to Ronald E. Smith" with an address — a nice bit of provenance from a former owner. Cover shows general age wear (scuffs, some corner softening).

i live in a small apartment without a lot of storage space. for LPs, i have two three-foot shelves, one for jazz, the other for everything else. last week, i made a new resolution to play at least one non-jazz record every day. here's how it's going. #vinyl #OldVinyl #vinylrecords
Santana's "Welcome" (1973). The cover is minimalist: a cream/off-white background with just the word "Welcome" rendered in elegant gold cursive script running diagonally across the sleeve, no other imagery or text visible on this side. There's some light foxing/age spotting near the top edge, consistent with a vinyl jacket from that era.

ALT by ClaudeThe Beatles, "Magical Mystery Tour" — the psychedelic rainbow cover with the band in animal costumes (walrus, bird, and rabbit-eared costumes) surrounded by colorful stars on a starry blue background, "Beatles" in yellow star-lettering above, and hand-lettered song titles arced across the top (The Fool on the Hill, Flying, Blue Jay Way, Your Mother Should Know, I Am the Walrus). A sticker/label notes it includes a 24-page picture book, and track titles (Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, Baby You're a Rich Man, All You Need Is Love) run along the bottom.

ALT by ClaudeThe Specials, "More Specials" — bold black-and-white title type over a color photo of the band lounging in armchairs around a low table cluttered with pint glasses, set against a retro wood-paneled/stained-glass backdrop; one member is baring vampire fangs for the camera.

ALT by ClaudeB.B. King, "A Heart Full of Blues" — a well-worn, scuffed cover (lots of surface wear/scratches) showing B.B. King in a mustard-yellow suit and bow tie, smiling, with a tracklist along the left side (You're Gonna Miss Me, Got 'Em Bad, Troubles Don't Last, Your Letter, I Can't Explain, The Wrong Road, I Need You Baby, So Many Days, Down Hearted, Strange Things) and a "Custom Records R&B Series" logo — catalog number CM 2040, monaural.

mailed out three mixtapes and a couple tape players, all local #mixtape #cassette #cassettetape
Three cassette tapes lean upright against each other in the foreground, each hand-painted with distinct designs. The left one has a nine-square grid pattern in mustard, pink, purple, and blue frames, each holding a different colored paint blob. The middle tape has a warm, streaky landscape in oranges, rust, and browns — almost like a desert sunset — with "OW" written near the top. The right tape is painted in deep blues with wavy and zigzag lines across four panels, giving it a night-sky or ocean-wave feel.

Behind the tapes sit two boxes wrapped for shipping — butcher paper and tape over portable cassette players, one with a shipping label visible. The whole arrangement rests on lavender and pink bubble-wrap mailers, all sitting on a richly patterned red, black, and cream Persian-style rug.

up late decorating cassettes and working on a new mix
Three J-cards (the larger, full-size paper inserts that wrap around a cassette case) and six labels (the smaller pieces that go directly on the cassette shell, some with the die-cut window for the tape reels), all hand-painted are arranged into a grid on a heavily paint-spattered cardboard palette, held up in one hand over a desk with a keyboard below.

The FYDELITY branding is visible peeking through on a few of the labels, and the whole palette is unified by the drips and test-strokes built up on the cardboard backing from other projects.

I’m all alone on the Northwood bus headed to North Campus where I’m meeting (in my new office!) a student who I am trying to recruit to write a Master’s thesis on digital privacy.
Riding the Northwood bus toward North Campus, snapping a selfie mid-ride. The photo's taken from a low angle looking toward the back of the bus, with the interior's yellow stanchions and blue seats filling most of the frame, and the ceiling grab handles dangling above. Someone in a cap and sunglasses is visible close to the camera on the right, and there's a bit of motion blur from the bus moving - the whole thing has that classic "quick pic on public transit" feel, empty seats and all.

omg there is an actual emeritus office now!
A small, sparsely furnished emeritus office, room 3128, viewed through its glass-paneled door. The nameplate reads "Computer Science & Engineering – Emeritus Office – 3128." Inside, gray carpet tile with flecks of orange runs to a large window with vertical blinds partly drawn, giving a view of an adjacent brick/tile building under a clear blue sky. A young fiddle-leaf fig plant sits in a black pot near the window alongside an empty black planter, and a black filing cabinet with a wood-toned top stands against the right wall. Part of a black office chair is visible near the window, and the room otherwise looks freshly built-out — clean white walls, suspended ceiling tiles, and an unoccupied, ready-to-move-in feel.

ALT by ClaudeIt’s me! In the emeritus office! In a brand new Herman Miller chair!

A close-up selfie of an older man [hmph] sitting in a black mesh-back office chair (Herman Miller style) in the same emeritus office as the previous photo. He's balding [ok ok enough] with white hair [oh ok so I am old already!] on the sides, wears rectangular black-framed glasses, and has a white mustache and soul patch. He's wearing a lavender-and-white striped button-down shirt, open at the collar, with a small beaded necklace visible underneath. His arm is extended toward the camera, taking the photo. Behind him, the office window looks out over a parking lot and a brick building across the street, with a bit of a green plant visible in the upper right corner of the frame. The expression is fairly neutral/deadpan, looking straight into the lens.

ALT by ClaudeThe view from my office window.

A wide daytime view over U-M's North Campus, looking out from a few floors up. On the left stands Baits Tower (the brick clock/bell tower with its distinctive stepped, angular design), rising above the surrounding plaza and lawns. Below and around it, brick-paved walkways and green lawns with young trees lead across the diag toward a low brick building in the middle distance, part of the Duderstadt Center, with a glass-walled corridor section.

In the foreground, a paved plaza gives way to a parking lot filled with cars, plus a small cluster of motorcycles and an electric scooter parked near a bike rack. A white University of Michigan Catering van is parked near the building entrance. The sky is clear and pale blue with light haze on a warm, sunny, September day.

My hand (with a woven bracelet on the wrist) holds up a vinyl record album. The cover is for the Count Basie Orchestra's album "E=MC² = Count Basie Orchestra + Neal Hefti Arrangements," on the Roulette label's Birdland Series, marked "Dynamic Stereo" with catalog number SR-52003.

The striking cover art is a large, dramatic photo of a mushroom cloud from a nuclear detonation, rendered in fiery orange, yellow, and red tones against a dark sky — a pun/visual joke tying "Basie" to "E=MC²" (Einstein's mass-energy equation, evoking the atomic bomb). "BASIE" is printed in blue block letters across the top of the explosion image.

In the background, I'm standing near a media shelf with the record spinning on a turntable, cassette tapes, some audio equipment, and a Hamadan rug on the floor.

seen on a telephone pole down the street
A protest poster wheat-pasted to a utility pole in Ann Arbor. It's a hand-drawn, comic-style flyer in bold yellow, green, and orange-red colors:

- The headline, in red hand-lettering on yellow, reads "WE DON'T NEED ALL THESE FUCKING DATA CENTERS."

- Below it, an illustration shows a data center building at night, with a caricatured figure labeled "Sam Altman" poking out and saying "But we need them to reach AGI!"

- Under that, another speech-bubble-style line reads "WE NEED WATER," over an image of silhouetted hands reaching up out of flames toward the data center.

- The bottom credits "@STOPtheDATA" and includes two QR codes with handwritten labels: one linking to "Why Data Centers Suck (Harvard Gazette)" and another to "Tools for Resisting Data Centers (mediajustice.org)."

It's layered among other flyers and stickers on the pole.

ALT by ClaudeAnother activist poster on the same pole, in a red/white/blue two-color print style:

- Bold hand-lettered headline at top: "FUCK I.C.E — ABOLISH I.C.E," underlined.

- Below it, a cartoon of a stocky figure in an "I.C.E" jacket and cap, drawn mid-flight/falling backward with arms and legs flailing — a comic "getting kicked out" pose.

- The bottom red band has white hand-lettered text: "Protect your neighbors — Donate to migrant defense! GET OUT on the STREETS."
- A QR code sits in the bottom right corner labeled "Donation page for the [Detroit?] Defense..." (partially obscured).

Like the data-center flyer, it's wheat-pasted alongside other stickers and posters on the same utility pole — part of a cluster of political street art/activism postings at that corner.

parking structure selfie under a lunar eclipse
It's a nighttime selfie from the top deck of the parking structure — empty rows with yellow lane markings, a chain-link and rail barrier along the edge, and the flat rooftops and scattered lights of Ann Arbor beyond. I’m on the right in a dark cap, glasses, and a green Northern hoodie, looking straight into the camera. Up in the black sky to the upper left is the partially eclipsed moon, showing that faint reddish-copper "blood moon" tint against the darkness — a nice small but clear detail against all that empty black sky.

still life with wine and animal crackers
Two glass bottles hold a garden-cut bouquet — a big white-and-pink dinner-plate dahlia and a purple allium ball dominate, surrounded by orange zinnias, a pale pink scabiosa, drooping pink cosmos, and some trailing vine (looks like a squash or nasturtium tendril) draping off to the right, with a few wilted yellow blooms mixed in. In front sits a glass of dark red wine, and to the left a red Barnum's Animals cracker box adds a pop of color and a bit of whimsy against the flowers. It's all set on a navy blue table runner, with a wooden chair back and a framed landscape print on the cream wall behind.

Andrew Bishop, Jesse Kramer and Andy Peck are performing a tribute to Sonny Rollins’ live album “A Night at the Village Vanguard," recorded on November 3, 1957 #BlueLlama #jazz #livemusic #SonnyRollins
A photo of a trio mid-set at the Blue Llama. Saxophonist Andrew Bishop stands front and center under the spotlight, mid-phrase, with bassist Andy Peck just behind him working a rich, warm tone on the upright, and drummer Jess Kramer off to the right, brushes in hand, tucked behind a compact kit. The club's signature neon "Blue Llama Ann Arbor" sign glows blue and red on the back wall, and a grand piano sits unattended stage left — a trio format, just like Rollins' classic Vanguard session with no chordal instrument up front, letting the horn lead.

The room itself has that intimate supper-club feel: small round tables with candles and water glasses scattered close to the stage, purple and violet wash lighting, a starlit ceiling effect, and heavy dark curtains framing the back of the room. Nice tribute setting for that particular record, too — the stripped-down horn/bass/drums lineup mirrors the sax trio format Rollins used at the Vanguard in 1957.

duolingo achievement unlocked! (four year streak)
This is a Duolingo streak screen with a dark teal background. In the center is the app's flame mascot — an orange flame icon with a lighter yellow teardrop shape inside it, sitting on an olive-green shadow/base, with a small dot above it. Below the flame, "1461" is displayed in large bold yellow numerals, and underneath that reads "day streak" in smaller yellow text.

1461 days works out to exactly four years (including one leap day).
