Burton Tower in the fog
Burton Tower is wrapped in thick fog, its upper third dissolving into a pale gray-blue sky so the top seems to disappear. The limestone shaft rises in tall vertical bands with stepped, Art Deco setbacks. Narrow windows stack up its face, and a clock face is faintly visible on the upper section, with the louvered bell-chamber openings above it barely discernible through the haze.

The foreground is quiet and muted. A curving concrete walkway sweeps from the lower right toward the tower, bordered by damp-looking grass dotted with a few fallen leaves. A double-globe black lamppost stands near the center, its white globes glowing softly against the mist. Behind it, a low hedge and a small plaza edge lead toward the tower's base, where a small arched wooden door is visible.

Autumn color is subtle: a large green-gold tree on the left, a rust-orange tree at right, and a yellow-orange tree in front of the tower, all softened by the fog. Beyond the tower, a large dark brick building and other trees fade into the whiteness. The scene is almost empty, with only a tiny figure far off at left, which adds to the hushed, early-morning feeling.

The fog flattens depth and turns everything into layered tones, with the dark lamppost and tree trunks as the strongest contrast. It reads as a calm, moody late-October campus scene.

spectacular
A 2-by-5 grid of ten close-up selfies of an older man with a bald head, wild white hair at the sides, and a white mustache and soul patch, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. In every shot he looks straight at the camera with raised, slightly furrowed brows and a flat, deadpan expression. Only his glasses change. Behind him is a cozy living room with exposed red brick, a bright red abstract painting on a blue-gray wall, a shelf of small figurines, and holiday lights and greenery.

Top row, left to right: thin, nearly rimless rectangular frames with a dark top bar; large round honey-amber tortoiseshell frames; small gold ovals with dark brown tinted lenses; thin burgundy-and-gold oval wire frames; slim silver rectangular frames.

Bottom row, left to right: browline frames with dark tortoiseshell tops and lighter metal bottoms; tiny rimless round glasses; round frames with a thick matte-black upper arc; round gold frames with rose-brown tinted lenses; round gold wire frames with one clear lens and one dark gray lens, giving a one-eyed, winking look.

we got the window seat at the old town
Late-afternoon sun is pouring through the window, with a starburst flare just above the right edge of the frame and a golden glow washing over the glass. The window itself is a little smudged and spotted, which catches the light and adds to the warm haze.

Outside is the corner of Liberty and Ashley, with a "No Turn on Red" sign and a "First St Detour" sign in orange. Traffic lights hang from a mast arm over the crosswalk, and a bare-branched tree with a few yellow leaves stands in the foreground, so it's clearly late fall. Beyond the intersection you can see the Fleetwood Diner's neon sign, tucked under the glare on the right.

Red Campari umbrellas shade the sidewalk patio tables, and a few diners sit at one table while three people stand chatting beside them. A red SUV is parked at the left edge of the frame.

Inside, the frame is dark wood trim with a rumpled red curtain gathered on a rod across the bottom. A small "Please Don't Touch" sign dangles from the window, and at the bottom right the table holds condiments (ketchup, mustard, and bottles). A chalkboard sign advertising an "Espresso Martini" peeks up at the lower center, and a hand holding a phone is faintly reflected at the left.

The overall feel is a cozy, lived-in tavern view of a quiet Ann Arbor autumn evening, with warm light inside and a cool blue sky beyond.

A chocolatier is opening up on Liberty, where Kilwin’s used to be. And it looks like a Middle Eastern restaurant is opening across the street, formerly TAQ. So an ice cream parlor becomes a sweet shop, and a taco joint a shawarma shop. Even trades.
Street-level photo of a terracotta-red brick storefront with a large brown sign reading “QUIX CHOCOLATE,” a small crown emblem between the two words. A tree with bright yellow autumn leaves stands at the left, partly covering the sign, and a black globe street lamp stands at center. Two large display windows hold dark brown posters with the word “QUIX” in an elegant serif typeface, “Belgian Chocolates” beneath it, and the text “Coming soon! Made in Michigan,” plus “Now hiring” with a website and Instagram handle. Between the windows is an orange-framed wooden door with glass panes and a window air conditioner above it; farther right is a bright blue door and a window with colorful artwork inside. On the sidewalk are a blue accessible-parking sign, a green parking pay post, and a pair of tall no-parking signs at the right edge. Golden fallen leaves blanket the street and gutter, and chalk lettering on the curb reads “FREE PALESTINE.” A red-brick building with a painted mural is visible at far right. The scene is an overcast autumn day.

ALT by ClaudePhoto of the street-level facade of a building with gray-painted brick and a stone base. A white banner above the entrance reads “Alloush Grill” in black cursive script. Below it, black-framed windows and a glass door are covered on the inside with brown kraft paper, hiding the interior, a sign that the space is being prepared for opening. Small gold lettering on the door glass reads “106 E Liberty St, Ste 120.” In front, a blue stepladder leans against the stone base. On the sidewalk sit two gray buckets, a white bucket with a red lid, a bag of building material, a mixing drill, a long-handled tool, and a yellow extension cord stretching across the pavement. At left, the mossy trunk of a tree with a few yellow leaves rises into the frame, and a security camera is mounted on the wall beside it. A second camera is fixed at right under the upper windows. Overcast daylight, late autumn.

It was a fun way to read a challenging novel, but it must have more than doubled the time I spent on the book. Yet my understanding and appreciation of it was multiplied many times over. There’s a reason this guy won the Nobel Prize. 3/3
A hardcover with a yellow cover lies open on a wooden café table, showing page 209 at the start of chapter “Twelve.” In the foreground is the foam of a cappuccino. Behind the book are a folded paper napkin, a dark cap, and a wood-paneled wall with a potted plant and black wooden chairs. A section of weathered red-painted wall is visible on the left.

A closed, mustard-yellow library hardcover lies on a white marble counter, its cover labeled “GRAD 828 G6215sp 1964.” Beside it is a cappuccino in a white cup and saucer. the view of here
Late-night selfie taken from a low angle, with me in the lower right corner and an wall of books rising behind me. I’m bald with wisps of gray hair at the sides, wearing dark-framed rectangular glasses and a gray mustache, and I have a calm, slightly deadpan expression. I’m in a dark sweater, and my face is lit by the soft glow of a screen.

The real star is the floor-to-ceiling white bookcase, packed with paperbacks, hardcovers, and leather-bound volumes. A white rolling ladder slants across the left side against an exposed brick wall, and a black rail runs along the upper shelves. Two cubbies are lit up like stage sets: one glows yellow and holds a row of miniature Dutch canal houses (KLM business class trans-Atlantic trophies), the other glows deep blue with twinkling multicolored string lights around a curved brown wooden nude sculpture.

Lower down, you can spot a few identifiable spines (War and Peace, a Tom Wolfe title, The Secret Life of Circuits by @lcamtuf) and a Cass Technical High School 1970 yearbook on the right. A framed portrait of Einstein sits beside a dark bust on a pedestal, with a small pair of 3D viewers nearby. At the bottom left, shelves of vinyl records lean over a turntable and a small amp, set into a white cabinet.

The overall mood is cozy, scholarly, and a little whimsical: a serious library with playful lighting, caught at an hour when all is quiet.

headed to the post office to mail some tapes (and one crappy tape player) to some friends in ann arbor and LA (and a stranger in ferndale)
A white-painted ledge against an old red brick wall, above a scuffed black floor. On the left sits a box for an "odeo" cassette player (AM/FM radio, recorder) with a cheerful pink plastic Walkman knockoff on the front and retro red, green and gold stripes down the side. Perched on top of the box and arranged around it are four clear cassette cases, each with a hand-painted J-card.

Top left, lying sideways: a field of greens in three vertical bands. There's dense forest-green brushwork like fish scales, a paler lime strip of short strokes, and dark green dabs marching over yellow like a crop row seen from a plane.

Top right, also sideways, the loudest of the bunch: a collage. Orange "$50" bank currency straps, one pasted upside down, bracket the corners. A vintage engraving of a reclining, twisting figure in green ink sits beside patches of red with green polka dots and navy with purple dots. Over it all is a slab of thick yellow paint that half-buries a typewritten poem. It opens with "typewriters. Enter this white room" and keeps drifting through lines about touch, mastery and blindness.

Bottom center, upright: hot pink and turquoise marbled together like a poured lava lamp, splotched with red and flecked with gold. A scrap of printed type peeks out along the top edge.

Bottom right, upright: deep ultramarine impasto churning like a night sea, slashed by rows of black diagonal dashes. Moody, heavy, and the best of the four.

corktown
This is a wide-angle, upward-looking shot dominated by sky. The top two-thirds is a sweep of wispy cirrus cloud that ends in a crisp, diagonal edge, with clean deep blue below it. A heavy black utility cable cuts across the top of the frame, along with a mast arm holding a hanging streetlight.

On the left is the C·P·A Building, a narrow five-story masonry building with a dentiled cornice, rows of small rosette ornaments, and a thin antenna on the roof. Almost every window is covered in weathered plywood, and only two still show glass or open frames. The wide lens makes it lean dramatically. At street level the arched bays are boarded up and covered with red-and-white "Vote Early" and "Built to Fight Back" posters. A green corner sign names the building, and green "Michigan" street signs hang nearby.

To the right, Michigan Avenue runs off toward an overpass lined with orange construction barrels. A white Ford Transit van and a white minivan are heading toward the camera beneath span-wire traffic lights (green) with "left turn only" signs. The right edge shows a grassy lot, trees just starting to turn yellow, a rusted-steel sculpture beside a low "Corktown" sign, a blank black billboard, and a distant white church steeple. The overall feel is bright early-autumn midday light over a half-vacant stretch of the neighborhood, with the boarded-up landmark set against a big sky.

i think about this a lot
Table comparing 160 acres farmed (corn, soy, wheat) versus leased to a solar developer, before income tax.

Income per acre: farming nets about $30–$200 after all costs; solar pays $300–$1,000, averaging $500–$700 nationally.

Total for 160 acres: farming about $5,000–$32,000; solar about $48,000–$160,000, or $80,000–$112,000 at the national average.

Best case: farming, a strong-price year on top soil; solar, $800–$2,500 per acre (up to $400,000) near tight transmission capacity, which is rare.

Stability: farming is volatile with prices, yields and input costs; solar is fixed once built, but only if the project is built.

Annual escalator: none for farming; typically 1.5%–2.5% for solar.

Your costs: farming means seed, chemicals, machinery, fuel, labor and land; solar is almost nothing, plus $500–$2,000 for an attorney review.

Before construction: solar pays only a small option fee, $10 to a few hundred dollars per acre, and many projects never get built.

Contract length: farming is one season; solar is 25–35 years, often with extensions.

sometimes shitty film and a shitty camera get it right #polaroid #photography
Black-and-white Polaroid of a young child with short, tousled blond hair, looking down with eyes nearly closed. The image is soft and blurred, as if the child moved during the exposure. The child wears a sleeveless dress with a bold floral pattern in dark and white. Behind them is a weathered brick wall with a string of café lights sagging across it and a multi-paned window at upper right. The right side of the frame is washed out to a pale cream glow, and small swirled chemical artifacts mark the print. A white starburst-like stain sits in the upper left corner.

ALT by ClaudeExtreme close-up Polaroid of a child's face, heavily blurred and overexposed so the image looks dreamlike. The child looks downward, with a dark smudge where the eyes are and the nose and mouth softly visible. Wisps of blond hair fall in dark, feathery streaks across the top and right of the frame. At lower left, a geometric diamond-lattice pattern on the child's clothing is the sharpest detail in the picture. Most of the frame fades to bright, creamy white, with faint rainbow-like chemical swirls near the bottom edge.

ALT by ClaudeBlack-and-white Polaroid of two stuffed animals sitting side by side on a tiled surface, both out of focus. In the foreground at left is a large, dark, plush teddy bear looking up and to the right, with a pale muzzle and dark nose. Beside it sits a smaller plush tiger with dark stripes on its arms, legs and tail, its head tilted upward as if watching something. Behind them, blown-out highlights show a white bucket or pot and other indistinct objects. The right side of the frame glows nearly white, and pale swirls of chemical residue mark the print.

RE: mastodon.social/@Robinbannks/117349… #nowplaying ! #steviewonder #songsinthekeyoflife
Songs in the Key of Life came out September 28, 1976, exactly 50 years ago. I’m holding up the gatefold sleeve, with its warm orange-and-amber sunburst of concentric, ragged-edged rings around a small pen-and-ink portrait at the center. The title curves along the inner ring and Stevie Wonder's name in flowing script below it. A round sticker in the upper left reads "Collector's Album, Includes Two Records, A Something's Extra Bonus Record, 24-Page Lyric Booklet." That's the original double LP plus the bonus 7-inch EP, which was the whole point of the "collector's album" pitch. [I have lost the booklet and EP #alas]

Behind it, the turntable is in the middle of playing one of the discs, with a yellow-and-red Tamla label visible and the tonearm resting on the record. The player looks like a Marantz full-automatic. To the left, a shelf is stuffed with records and 45s, and up top there's a City of Ann Arbor, Michigan medallion among some challenge coins on the ledge.

i bought some records on ebay. i have always wanted the köln concerts! and this sinatra record is fabulous. #vinyl #OldVinyl #vinylrecords #jazz #sinatra #KeithJarrett #miles #milesdavis #franksinatra #jazz
Keith Jarrett, "The Köln Concert" (ECM 1064/65) — the classic minimal ECM design: cream background, plain black text with the title, and a black-and-white photo of Jarrett in profile, head bowed and absorbed at the piano, wearing a patterned-cuff shirt.

ALT by ClaudeMiles Davis, "Miles Ahead" (Columbia CL 1041, this pressing electronically rechanneled for stereo, CS 8633) — orchestra under Gil Evans, "Miles Davis + 19" noted on the cover. Photo shows Miles mid-performance on trumpet, close-up and intense. The jacket has visible wear — soft/worn corners and edges, some scuffing on the cardboard.

ALT by ClaudeFrank Sinatra, "Put Your Dreams Away" (Columbia CL 1136) — a striking close-up black-and-white/sepia-toned profile shot of Sinatra's face in dramatic side lighting, title in orange/pink text at the top. There's an ownership sticker in the corner reading "I belong to Ronald E. Smith" with an address — a nice bit of provenance from a former owner. Cover shows general age wear (scuffs, some corner softening).

i live in a small apartment without a lot of storage space. for LPs, i have two three-foot shelves, one for jazz, the other for everything else. last week, i made a new resolution to play at least one non-jazz record every day. here's how it's going. #vinyl #OldVinyl #vinylrecords
Santana's "Welcome" (1973). The cover is minimalist: a cream/off-white background with just the word "Welcome" rendered in elegant gold cursive script running diagonally across the sleeve, no other imagery or text visible on this side. There's some light foxing/age spotting near the top edge, consistent with a vinyl jacket from that era.

ALT by ClaudeThe Beatles, "Magical Mystery Tour" — the psychedelic rainbow cover with the band in animal costumes (walrus, bird, and rabbit-eared costumes) surrounded by colorful stars on a starry blue background, "Beatles" in yellow star-lettering above, and hand-lettered song titles arced across the top (The Fool on the Hill, Flying, Blue Jay Way, Your Mother Should Know, I Am the Walrus). A sticker/label notes it includes a 24-page picture book, and track titles (Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, Baby You're a Rich Man, All You Need Is Love) run along the bottom.

ALT by ClaudeThe Specials, "More Specials" — bold black-and-white title type over a color photo of the band lounging in armchairs around a low table cluttered with pint glasses, set against a retro wood-paneled/stained-glass backdrop; one member is baring vampire fangs for the camera.

ALT by ClaudeB.B. King, "A Heart Full of Blues" — a well-worn, scuffed cover (lots of surface wear/scratches) showing B.B. King in a mustard-yellow suit and bow tie, smiling, with a tracklist along the left side (You're Gonna Miss Me, Got 'Em Bad, Troubles Don't Last, Your Letter, I Can't Explain, The Wrong Road, I Need You Baby, So Many Days, Down Hearted, Strange Things) and a "Custom Records R&B Series" logo — catalog number CM 2040, monaural.

mailed out three mixtapes and a couple tape players, all local #mixtape #cassette #cassettetape
Three cassette tapes lean upright against each other in the foreground, each hand-painted with distinct designs. The left one has a nine-square grid pattern in mustard, pink, purple, and blue frames, each holding a different colored paint blob. The middle tape has a warm, streaky landscape in oranges, rust, and browns — almost like a desert sunset — with "OW" written near the top. The right tape is painted in deep blues with wavy and zigzag lines across four panels, giving it a night-sky or ocean-wave feel.

Behind the tapes sit two boxes wrapped for shipping — butcher paper and tape over portable cassette players, one with a shipping label visible. The whole arrangement rests on lavender and pink bubble-wrap mailers, all sitting on a richly patterned red, black, and cream Persian-style rug.

up late decorating cassettes and working on a new mix
Three J-cards (the larger, full-size paper inserts that wrap around a cassette case) and six labels (the smaller pieces that go directly on the cassette shell, some with the die-cut window for the tape reels), all hand-painted are arranged into a grid on a heavily paint-spattered cardboard palette, held up in one hand over a desk with a keyboard below.

The FYDELITY branding is visible peeking through on a few of the labels, and the whole palette is unified by the drips and test-strokes built up on the cardboard backing from other projects.

I’m all alone on the Northwood bus headed to North Campus where I’m meeting (in my new office!) a student who I am trying to recruit to write a Master’s thesis on digital privacy.
Riding the Northwood bus toward North Campus, snapping a selfie mid-ride. The photo's taken from a low angle looking toward the back of the bus, with the interior's yellow stanchions and blue seats filling most of the frame, and the ceiling grab handles dangling above. Someone in a cap and sunglasses is visible close to the camera on the right, and there's a bit of motion blur from the bus moving - the whole thing has that classic "quick pic on public transit" feel, empty seats and all.

storm has passed and now it's a lovely evening in ann arbor
A quiet downtown street shot straight down the centerline, looking toward a glowing sunset at the far end. The sky is mostly clear pale blue overhead, with warm orange and gold light spreading low along the horizon where the sun has just set — the kind of clean, washed sky you often get right after a storm clears out.

Flanking the street are a mix of older brick buildings on the left, a tall cream-colored art deco tower (with what looks like a flagpole on top) in the middle distance, and a more modern brick-and-glass building on the right. Street trees with dark, full canopies line both sides, and cars are parked bumper-to-bumper along both curbs — SUVs, sedans, a minivan. A handful of vehicles are moving through the intersection a block or two down, with traffic signals visible glowing in the dusk.

The overall mood is calm and a little cinematic — empty street, symmetrical framing, and that soft afterglow light that often follows a storm rolling through.

omg there is an actual emeritus office now!
A small, sparsely furnished emeritus office, room 3128, viewed through its glass-paneled door. The nameplate reads "Computer Science & Engineering – Emeritus Office – 3128." Inside, gray carpet tile with flecks of orange runs to a large window with vertical blinds partly drawn, giving a view of an adjacent brick/tile building under a clear blue sky. A young fiddle-leaf fig plant sits in a black pot near the window alongside an empty black planter, and a black filing cabinet with a wood-toned top stands against the right wall. Part of a black office chair is visible near the window, and the room otherwise looks freshly built-out — clean white walls, suspended ceiling tiles, and an unoccupied, ready-to-move-in feel.

ALT by ClaudeIt’s me! In the emeritus office! In a brand new Herman Miller chair!

A close-up selfie of an older man [hmph] sitting in a black mesh-back office chair (Herman Miller style) in the same emeritus office as the previous photo. He's balding [ok ok enough] with white hair [oh ok so I am old already!] on the sides, wears rectangular black-framed glasses, and has a white mustache and soul patch. He's wearing a lavender-and-white striped button-down shirt, open at the collar, with a small beaded necklace visible underneath. His arm is extended toward the camera, taking the photo. Behind him, the office window looks out over a parking lot and a brick building across the street, with a bit of a green plant visible in the upper right corner of the frame. The expression is fairly neutral/deadpan, looking straight into the lens.

ALT by ClaudeThe view from my office window.

A wide daytime view over U-M's North Campus, looking out from a few floors up. On the left stands Baits Tower (the brick clock/bell tower with its distinctive stepped, angular design), rising above the surrounding plaza and lawns. Below and around it, brick-paved walkways and green lawns with young trees lead across the diag toward a low brick building in the middle distance, part of the Duderstadt Center, with a glass-walled corridor section.

In the foreground, a paved plaza gives way to a parking lot filled with cars, plus a small cluster of motorcycles and an electric scooter parked near a bike rack. A white University of Michigan Catering van is parked near the building entrance. The sky is clear and pale blue with light haze on a warm, sunny, September day.

i'm in the hefti bag tonight #jazz #basie #countbasie #CountBasieandHisOrchestra #nealhefti #nowplaying #vinyl #vinylrecords #OldVinyl
My hand (with a woven bracelet on the wrist) holds up a vinyl record album. The cover is for the Count Basie Orchestra's album "E=MC² = Count Basie Orchestra + Neal Hefti Arrangements," on the Roulette label's Birdland Series, marked "Dynamic Stereo" with catalog number SR-52003.

The striking cover art is a large, dramatic photo of a mushroom cloud from a nuclear detonation, rendered in fiery orange, yellow, and red tones against a dark sky — a pun/visual joke tying "Basie" to "E=MC²" (Einstein's mass-energy equation, evoking the atomic bomb). "BASIE" is printed in blue block letters across the top of the explosion image.

In the background, I'm standing near a media shelf with the record spinning on a turntable, cassette tapes, some audio equipment, and a Hamadan rug on the floor.

seen on a telephone pole down the street
A protest poster wheat-pasted to a utility pole in Ann Arbor. It's a hand-drawn, comic-style flyer in bold yellow, green, and orange-red colors:

- The headline, in red hand-lettering on yellow, reads "WE DON'T NEED ALL THESE FUCKING DATA CENTERS."

- Below it, an illustration shows a data center building at night, with a caricatured figure labeled "Sam Altman" poking out and saying "But we need them to reach AGI!"

- Under that, another speech-bubble-style line reads "WE NEED WATER," over an image of silhouetted hands reaching up out of flames toward the data center.

- The bottom credits "@STOPtheDATA" and includes two QR codes with handwritten labels: one linking to "Why Data Centers Suck (Harvard Gazette)" and another to "Tools for Resisting Data Centers (mediajustice.org)."

It's layered among other flyers and stickers on the pole.

ALT by ClaudeAnother activist poster on the same pole, in a red/white/blue two-color print style:

- Bold hand-lettered headline at top: "FUCK I.C.E — ABOLISH I.C.E," underlined.

- Below it, a cartoon of a stocky figure in an "I.C.E" jacket and cap, drawn mid-flight/falling backward with arms and legs flailing — a comic "getting kicked out" pose.

- The bottom red band has white hand-lettered text: "Protect your neighbors — Donate to migrant defense! GET OUT on the STREETS."
- A QR code sits in the bottom right corner labeled "Donation page for the [Detroit?] Defense..." (partially obscured).

Like the data-center flyer, it's wheat-pasted alongside other stickers and posters on the same utility pole — part of a cluster of political street art/activism postings at that corner.

parking structure selfie under a lunar eclipse
It's a nighttime selfie from the top deck of the parking structure — empty rows with yellow lane markings, a chain-link and rail barrier along the edge, and the flat rooftops and scattered lights of Ann Arbor beyond. I’m on the right in a dark cap, glasses, and a green Northern hoodie, looking straight into the camera. Up in the black sky to the upper left is the partially eclipsed moon, showing that faint reddish-copper "blood moon" tint against the darkness — a nice small but clear detail against all that empty black sky.

i left a couple mixtapes and a tape player at the post office prepaid counter (to be received with surprise by someone i barely know who least expects it 🤪 ) #mixtape #cassette #cassettetapes
A hand holds up a small stack of USPS-labeled packages at a post office counter. The front-most package is a small package with a "USPS Ground Advantage" Click-N-Ship label, mailed from 48104. Behind it are a couple of pink bubble mailers, also with USPS labels. In the background sit a few more packages waiting to be shipped — including a yellow floral-print mailer with a daisy pattern — on a blue counter, along with some paperwork, a power strip, and other office equipment.

still life with wine and animal crackers
Two glass bottles hold a garden-cut bouquet — a big white-and-pink dinner-plate dahlia and a purple allium ball dominate, surrounded by orange zinnias, a pale pink scabiosa, drooping pink cosmos, and some trailing vine (looks like a squash or nasturtium tendril) draping off to the right, with a few wilted yellow blooms mixed in. In front sits a glass of dark red wine, and to the left a red Barnum's Animals cracker box adds a pop of color and a bit of whimsy against the flowers. It's all set on a navy blue table runner, with a wooden chair back and a framed landscape print on the cream wall behind.

A hand holds open the gatefold sleeve of Parliament's Mothership Connection, unfolded to show the interior comic-strip artwork — the trippy, psychedelic panels depicting "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk" facing off against Star Child/funk characters, ending in the panel where he "gives up the funk" and joins the party (the "Ain't Nothin' But a Party!" panel with the horned dancing figures). The album's iconic front cover, with the spaceship gliding through space and the astronaut in silver and red, is propped up in the background against a shelf of other records in what looks like a home listening/record collection setup — you can see a wire basket of vinyl and a bookshelf packed with LPs behind it.

hers's the truth: i don't love sonny rollins. i like sonny rollins. a lot. not love though. OTOH i do love john coltrane. I LOVE JOHN COLTRANE. #nowplaying #JohnColtrane #LateNightConfession
A low-angle shot, taken from somewhere near the floor, of a hand holding up a copy of Miles Davis's Steamin' — the Prestige LP with Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. Catalog number PR 7580, and the small line across the top notes it's been electronically re-mastered for stereo, so it's one of the later '60s repressings rather than an original mono. The sleeve is worn at the corners: high-contrast profile of Miles emerging out of pure black, with the title in that orange script.

Behind it, floor-to-ceiling white built-in shelves packed tight with books — Persepolis, some leather-bound gilt classics (The Idiot, Camille), a run of Knausgaard. A white staircase cuts across the upper left with exposed brick behind it.

Two lit niches do most of the work: a warm yellow one holding a row of Delft blue KLM miniature canal houses lined up like a little skyline, and below right a blue-violet one with scattered fairy lights and a polished dark wood sculpture, all smooth curves — something like a bird or a wave. A round Hakone Ropeway sticker is stuck on the shelf edge at lower left.

Andrew Bishop, Jesse Kramer and Andy Peck are performing a tribute to Sonny Rollins’ live album “A Night at the Village Vanguard," recorded on November 3, 1957 #BlueLlama #jazz #livemusic #SonnyRollins
A photo of a trio mid-set at the Blue Llama. Saxophonist Andrew Bishop stands front and center under the spotlight, mid-phrase, with bassist Andy Peck just behind him working a rich, warm tone on the upright, and drummer Jess Kramer off to the right, brushes in hand, tucked behind a compact kit. The club's signature neon "Blue Llama Ann Arbor" sign glows blue and red on the back wall, and a grand piano sits unattended stage left — a trio format, just like Rollins' classic Vanguard session with no chordal instrument up front, letting the horn lead.

The room itself has that intimate supper-club feel: small round tables with candles and water glasses scattered close to the stage, purple and violet wash lighting, a starlit ceiling effect, and heavy dark curtains framing the back of the room. Nice tribute setting for that particular record, too — the stripped-down horn/bass/drums lineup mirrors the sax trio format Rollins used at the Vanguard in 1957.

duolingo achievement unlocked! (four year streak)
This is a Duolingo streak screen with a dark teal background. In the center is the app's flame mascot — an orange flame icon with a lighter yellow teardrop shape inside it, sitting on an olive-green shadow/base, with a small dot above it. Below the flame, "1461" is displayed in large bold yellow numerals, and underneath that reads "day streak" in smaller yellow text.

1461 days works out to exactly four years (including one leap day).

three new mix tapes ready to ship, this time to a couple new "subscribers" (i.e., people who wake up one day and find a weirdly decorated mix tape and sometimes even a cheap ass cassette player in their mail from someone they barely know amirite subscribers?)
Three hand-painted cassette tapes are arranged on top of a laptop keyboard and trackpad. The top tape features a nine-square grid pattern, each square a different color combination (rust/tan, purple/tan, red/tan on the top row; gray-green/tan, black/tan, blue/brown on the middle; purple/dark green, pink/green, olive/navy on the bottom), with a small raised blob of paint in a contrasting color dotted in the center of each square — giving it a tactile, almost braille-like quality. The bottom left tape has a bold striped design: horizontal bands of burnt orange with loose, hand-drawn magenta/pink stripes dragged across them. The bottom right tape shows a layered landscape scene — a dark charcoal-black band with rust-red daubs across the top (like a night sky or distant hills), a thick swath of olive-green squiggly texture in the middle (suggesting foliage or a hedge), and a warm brown lower band scattered with white-outlined circles with red centers (like polka dots, berries, or seeds). There's handwriting visible on the surface behind the tapes, including partial phrases like "sometimes" and "yet," and what looks like a date or course code ("LSA 5008" or similar).

ALT by ClaudeThe same three cassettes are now stacked and shown from the spine/label side, resting against the laptop's keyboard near the command and option keys. Each spine is a FYDELITY-brand cassette label, hand-painted along the edges with the same colors as their respective covers, and titled in purple marker cursive/print handwriting. From top to bottom: "love and disorder" (pink and mustard painted edge), "cool" (orange painted edge, with a small drawn squiggle/line under the text), and "mancini @ TV" (multicolored edge showing purple, red, pink, and olive — matching the nine-square grid cover). The stack has a handmade, personal mixtape aesthetic — playful hand-lettering paired with abstract painted patterns unique to each tape.

tomorrow is our 10th anniversary (can you believe it!?!) and we are headed to grand rapids (!) on our second honeymoon! here we are in our wedding togs ten years ago. (I shoulda tucked in my shirt, and maybe even considered a tie. #alas)
Photo of me and Lynn standing close together in the alley behind our loft, arms linked, smiling at the camera, in front of a red brick wall covered in climbing ivy with loose diagonal vine trails and some dry, leafless tendrils woven through the green.

On the left, Lynn, with shoulder-length blonde-streaked hair, wears a sleeveless cream lace dress with a scalloped V-neckline, fitted bodice, and a full knee-length skirt with a scalloped hem. What a beautiful bride! She accessorizes with a couple of thin bracelets and small earrings, and wears dark navy ankle-strap heels.

On the right, itsa me!, a man with a balding head, glasses, and a neatly trimmed white beard wearing a long-sleeved white button-down shirt with the cuffs rolled partway up, tan linen trousers, and brown leather sandals. I'm standing with one hand on my hip, smiling broadly.

We're standing on a plain concrete sidewalk in soft, warm natural light, suggesting late afternoon or early evening. The mood is casual and celebratory, a candid portrait taken just after a wedding ceremony.

i ran across this in a book of essays by john green. i think gertrude stein was on to something here.
A black-and-white close-up of my thumb pressing down the top corner of a book page to keep it open, the wrinkled skin and nail taking up the top portion of the frame in sharp, heavily-textured detail. Below it, the page shows a paragraph where the author reflects on a Gertrude Stein essay — "What Are Masterpieces and Why Are There So Few of Them" — about the difficulty of making art in an era of constant media saturation, where the sheer volume of things "everybody all day long knows" through radio, cinema, newspapers, and biographies dulls people's capacity to be thrilled by them. The typography is classic serif book printing, and the high-contrast monochrome treatment makes the thumb's ridges and creases almost topographic against the crisp white page.

music lover
Dottie has claimed the stereo stack as her throne, and she's positioned herself right where the audio gear lives. She's perched on top of the Yamaha receiver (mid-song, judging by the "BLUETO..." readout on the display), with her tail curled down in a dramatic white question-mark that dangles in front of the Carver dual cassette deck below. Below that sits a Marantz turntable with a record already queued up, and a Count Basie LP resting nearby — so the whole rig is genuinely in use, not just decorative.

She's got that classic cat look of "I was midway through inspecting something and got distracted by the camera" — one paw planted, head turned back over her shoulder toward you with a slightly unimpressed expression.

Above her, the shelf is a nice cluttered gallery: a moody Einstein portrait, a bronze bust of a woman's head, family photos, an issue of the hacker 'zine Phrack, an orange toy peeking out near a pair of old binoculars, and a shelf of books (spines suggest some serious, academic titles — cybernetics, philosophy, economics). It has the feel of a well-loved, lived-in study — analog audio gear stacked up, art and mementos on the shelf above, and a cat who's decided the whole setup exists for her benefit.

incidentally, if you were curious about the lengths of the many national anthems sung before june and july's world cup matches ... i've got you covered
Seven sticky notes ring a mechanical stopwatch (a red-hand Ritter, 15-jewel) on a red, black, and tan Persian rug. Each note lists countries with anthem durations in minutes:seconds, handwritten in black, blue, purple, and red ink, mostly between 0:41 and 1:49.

Top row: one note runs Algeria/Australia/Mexico through Japan, Netherlands, Morocco, France, Sweden, Ecuador. A middle note leads with Colombia and DR Congo (each re-timed twice), then Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Germany, Ecuador, Japan, Sweden, and unfinished entries for Tunisia/Netherlands. A right note runs USA, Turkiye, Paraguay, Australia, Colombia, Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, Jordan, and a partly obscured last line.

Flanking the stopwatch: one note has Portugal, Spain, Belgium, USA, Argentina, Egypt, then Spain and Belgium again — repeat matchups re-clocked. The other has Argentina, Cape Verde, "USA badly" (1:43, an editorial note on a rough rendition), Paraguay, France, Brazil, Norway, England, Mexico.

Bottom two notes: one short list — Argentina, Switzerland, France, Spain, England, Argentina again. The other, partly in blue ink — England, Congo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, USA, Spain, Austria, Portugal, Croatia, Australia, Egypt.

Repeat countries (USA, Spain, Argentina, Portugal, England) show real variation between matches — from broadcast cuts, ceremony pacing, or stopwatch timing.

[sportsball] i guess i can get rid of these notes from last season's #PSG matches
A grid of yellow Post-it notes arranged in rows and columns on a red, black, and cream patterned rug (looks like a Persian/Oriental style rug).

The notes form a fairly neat 5-row by 5-6-column array, some slightly askew or overlapping the rug's border pattern.

Each note has handwritten player surnames — I can make out names like Barcola, Dembélé, Doué, Ramos, Kvaratskhelia (abbreviated "Kvar"), Lee, Mbaye, Vitinha, Neves, Hernandez, Pacho, Zabarnyi, Hakimi, Mendes, Ruiz, Mayulu, Ndjantou, and "ZE" (likely Zaïre-Emery) — all recognizable as PSG squad members. Several notes also have small numbers (like "541," "4201," "20," "99") and some jersey-style markings.

Many notes have arrows connecting names, suggesting they're mapping passing sequences, buildup play, or goal moves — like a hand-drawn tactical/possession tracker. A few names are crossed out, which might indicate substitutions or a name written incorrectly and corrected.

This looks like a personal system for logging notable passing sequences or goal-scoring moves as they happened during PSG matches — one sticky note per sequence/incident, jotted down in real time, since the handwriting is quick and a bit messy with corrections.

i was destined to spend most of my life tangled up with the university of michigan
A black-and-white snapshot of two kids sitting cross-legged on a white leather sofa, with a brick wall as the backdrop. Someone has scrawled "yeh the BIG M" across the top margin in marker.

Vicki is on the left, grinning with her arm stretched out along the sofa back, wearing a light-colored dress with a ruffled collar and her hair in a neat bob with bangs. Little Peter is next to her, sitting with his legs crossed, in a dark cardigan or letterman-style sweater with a big "M" patch on the chest and striped bands on the sleeve — clearly a nod to Michigan, which is a nice bit of foreshadowing given where he ended up. He's got striped socks and a bright, slightly gap-toothed smile.

Behind them is a low bookshelf with a vase of flowers and a stack of books. The whole thing has that classic mid-century family-room feel — the exposed brick, the leather sofa, the handwritten caption up top like it came straight out of a photo album.

i'm finna mail out some mix tapes this weekend so heads up michigan (ann arbor, ann arbor, and birmingham) and california (LA, oakland, SF). hey, check out the splatter!
A stacked tower of six Norelco cases, shot spine-on so you can read the labels:

"OW" — dark background, black lettering
"do listen" — dark background, white lettering
"Cal Tjader" — on a white FYDELITY-branded insert, magenta lettering
"sixties" — bold yellow lettering over a black/purple/red painted spine
"+ like" — black lettering over a cream spine splattered with blue and red paint, also FYDELITY-branded
"after work" — black lettering over a similar cream/blue/red splatter spine

The splatter-painted ones (sixties, + like, after work) look like a matched set — same palette of cream base with blue and red drips, like they were painted in the same session.

ALT by ClaudeSix Norelco cases displayed face-out on mini easels against a brick wall:

Top left: cream/tan case with red splatter and blue drips (matches the "after work" splatter style)
Top center: black background with a scattering of colorful painted dots/circles — almost a night-sky or planetary look
Top right: white case with bold green, pink, and lavender curved bands, plus yellow at the edge
Bottom left: green background with a bold abstract design — black/blue swirl shapes outlined in red, with a red-and-black striped edge
Bottom center: dark background with a dense green and blue swirling/coiled pattern, almost like a wave or vortex
Bottom right: cream background with blue paint and heavy red splatter

The dot/circle one and the green-swirl one are especially striking as standalone abstract pieces — they'd read well even without knowing they're cassette cases. Nice range across the set: some are playful hand-lettered mixes, others are more purely abstract paint work.

we're back from ossineke, where we hung out with these people for a few (too few) days
Aelfie with me in the foreground grinning stupidly at the camera. Behind me stretches a full picnic table under the trees, mid-cookout (hot dogs, mac and cheese, chicken, ketchup and mustard bottles making the rounds).

Reading down the table: Zeth in the denim shirt and cap, Fiona in sunglasses next to him, then little Zoe and Sadie in matching tie-dye hoodies. Leah is holding Arlo, who's reaching toward the food. Emily's in the plaid-lined jacket, Max is grinning in his own tie-dye hoodie, and Maggie's on the end in blue. Lynn's right beside me in pink, mid-bite of a hot dog. Max is hidden behind Lynn.

It's got that great chaotic multi-generational cookout energy — everyone's got a plate of food going, the little ones look happily fed and a bit messy, and the woods and cabin roofline in the background give it a real up-north summer feel.

A storefront entrance is flanked by two big display windows painted with "NOISE & TOYS" and "WE PAY CASH FOR RECORDS," plus a hand-drawn "OPEN" sign and a Record Store Day Drops poster in the right window. The awning above is decorated with a row of oversized musical notes cut from what looks like white vinyl or paper, giving it a fun, handmade record-shop vibe. Chalkboard panels below each window are covered in band names and doodles — KISS, Aerosmith, a Grateful Dead skull-and-lightning-bolt, a robot, and "RETRO STEVE'S" scrawled above the left window (suggesting the space may be shared with or formerly belonged to another shop). The glass itself is stacked with vinyl records, action figures, and other pop-culture toys, and you can see a reflection of the street and a passerby in the window glass. A braided doormat sits at the glass door, which shows the address "117 N2 AV" above it.

the view from here
A stone spiral labyrinth on the sandy shore of Thunder Bay, laid out with flat dark shale pieces and a piece of driftwood marking the center. The view looks out across the bay toward Alpena, with calm blue water, a tree-lined shoreline in the distance, and a couple of small structures (what look like a swim platform and a dock) out on the water. Dune grass and a few bleached driftwood branches frame the scene in the foreground under a clear, mostly sunny sky.

the view from here
Acloser look at two illuminated display niches built into my bookshelf, flanked by regular book shelving.

The top niche glows warm yellow and holds a row of little KLM Delft blue-style houses (the miniature ceramic canal houses airlines give out in business class) — a whole city skyline lined up shoulder to shoulder.

The lower niche is lit in cool blue/purple with scattered fairy lights (red, blue, gold pinpricks), giving it a nighttime-gallery feel. Inside sits a carved wooden sculpture presiding over a little scene of miniature easels holding decorated cassette tapes (abstract color-block canvases in red, orange, and dark tones), plus a couple of small 3D glasses (one red/blue pair, one red pair) propped up on the shelf like they're part of the display.

In between, a normal shelf holds a run of handsome leather-bound classics with gilt lettering — "The Idiot," "Camille," "King..." something, "Bell Jars," "Grimm's Fairy Tales" among them — plus a "Triangle 1970" bound volume on the right bay.

Above and below, the regular shelves are packed with a wide mix of fiction and nonfiction (Murakami, O'Brien, "Persepolis," Nick Hornby visible), and a "Tom Wolfe" spine near the bottom, along with a dark sculptural object and a folded paper map or transit diagram tucked in at lower right.

oh wow i forgot about this super awesome mix!
A screenshot of iTunes/Music showing a "Parappa the Rapper" playlist — 22 songs, 1 hour, 1 minute — pulled from three albums: the original "Parappa The Rapper" and "Parappa The Rapper 2" soundtracks (both by Masaya Matsuura, plus De La Soul on a couple tracks), and one mash-up track from a compilation called "Never Gonna Release This Crap."

The genre panel splits into "Game" and "mash-up." Track 4, "Prince Fleaswallow's RAP," is currently playing.

The first 11 tracks are from the 1996 original soundtrack — the classic stage raps like "Chop Chop Master Onion's RAP," "Instructor Mooselini's RAP," "Prince Fleaswallow's RAP," through "Funny Love." Tracks 12–21 are from the 2001 sequel soundtrack, including "Toasty Buns," "Romantic Love," "Sista Moosesha," and two versions of "Say 'I Gotta Believe!'" by De La Soul. The final track, "Parappa Like Its Hot" by DJ Luciernaga (2005), is the standalone mash-up closing out the list.

Ratings run mostly 3–4 stars, and play counts show some real favorites — "Prince Fleaswallow's RAP" has 35 plays, "Noodles Can't Be Beat" has 30. Total library stats at the bottom: 22 songs, 1:00:41, 76.3 MB. There's also a stray spreadsheet with dollar figures peeking in from a window behind it.
