(I do ask it not entirely rhetorically as I myself live on west London a council estate on the border of zone 2/3 that is still largely white working class)

Even those who don't aren't exactly the Reform target vote I would have thought. Like, how many people have moved into that area in the last 15 years who aren't either graduates OR council tenants of multicultural backgrounds?

As I was saying yesterday there is an obvious switch in approach and it's a welcome one. Let's see if it sticks with Katie Lam, Nick Timothy etc... on the front bench.

I was tickled once reading something from the turn of the 70s/80s making the exact opposite case that the British were rebellious and prone to social disorder because they never built republican institutions, unlike the French.

Interesting point here and makes me wonder if they'd even be capable of doing a non-nasty campaign today.

My American wife had a gentle crisis about her predicament prompted by our two year old demanding a crisp sandwich and entirely refusing to accept my wife's insistence that a sandwich can't only have carbs.

You very rarely hear restrictionists even try to grapple with what private sector jobs will be squeezed out of existence in order to shift labour to public services

Nahhhh. I straddle the ocean and know a lot of British people and America and the sad truth is Americans are really mentally gunning for each other in a way British people aren't.

Increasingly fear one Western country is gonna have to collapse into an actual civil war/dictatorship for the rest to take the necessary steps to move away from the brink so many of us are rapidly approaching. Just pray the salutary example isn't us or the one nation that can destroy us all

Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Seems Americans are the most primed for it and I don't mean all the guns, I mean the fact if you asked a British person "who would you kill if the civil war came?" they'd think you were insane and have no idea but an awful lot of Americans already know *exactly* who they'd be shooting at roadblocks

Many allegations against them, and Russians are not beating any of them.

When I first started learning Russian I came across a song that was bouncy and happy and that I listened to a good bit but understood none of. I listened to it again and my jaw dropped as I clocked it was all about overdosing on phenibut and imagining your mum finding you dying in the bathtub.

Like when a lot of Americans talk about Israelis killing innocent kids they're picturing their recently retired uncle who drinks too much, and that's sort of invisible to a lot of Europeans
130
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
But, and this is straying into my own pet theories here, if you want to understand why Americans are quite so excited/weird/extreme about I-P today, it's important to remember it carries an enormous amount of the weight and memory of Vietnam that Americans still don't really feel able to discuss
130
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
But it was definitely still there and you had Americans going to training camps, but that entire episode is kinda glossed over in the entire American official forgetting of quite how violent the anti-war movement got in the US
120
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
And so at the same exact time that the European radical left had the emergence of an Arab/Palestinian struggle as a cause celebre, the American radical left had the much more pressing one of 'I don't want to be drafted and end up dying in Vietnam'
130
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
So this is a really interesting thing and I (unfortunately for you) have opinions. I think a big part of the issue is that the Vietnam War was a huge fissure that snapped the US radical left away from the European radical left.

Honestly as someone who has been knocking about this topic for two decades now if it is anything like that it's a re-import of a lot of the I-P politics that flew under the radar here in the wake of the Iraq War

Also speaks to the trap left governments often find themselves trying to shore up a system that their voters generally also don't like and that was, in many though not all ways, a product of their predecessors defeats in the 80s and 90s.

Think it's telling that decent tradesmen desperately try to avoid working on new builds and really try to get work on big renovations.

It's honestly really strange not least because otherwise he is a unicorn landlord who both fixes things well and quickly and understands people living places (with kids!) will break things so I suppose all the landlord brainworms got allocated to 'how much is this place actually worth?'

My landlord told us he was trying to sell the house we are renting (in London) and were quite worried about having to move early until he also told us he wouldn't accept less than £150k more than it nearly sold for in 2024. Zero viewings in six months.

I do wonder sometimes if certain people in Labour have ever met the modern working class. I know in reality they have, but it never feels like it. Working people are overwhelmingly literate now! Most know people of other races! Many have gay friends or family! Some worry about climate change!

A pet gripe of mine is that Thames Water being utter shit is a pretty significant part of some of London's dysfunction, but it all gets lumped in as 'roadworks'.

👀London's newest section of Cycleway!! This section of the Cycleway 4 extension - between Gallions Rd & Charlton Church Lane - is due to open this week. We've expanded our network of Cycleways from 90km in 2016 to 450+km today. And cycling across the capital is soaring🚲🚲🚲

I am making a pretty limited but really crucial point here: the path to Putin runs through the Russian experience of the 90s, and that also ran through the fact that the looting of the economy was only possible through dodgy capital flight that we were perfectly happy to partake in
210
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I mean no that isn't my point at all: it is his fault and the fault of Russian society, but you cannot seriously tell me that if the 90s had gone well we would be here anymore than you can tell me WW2 would have happened if Weimar had flourished.
320
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
To engage with this seriously: do you think it is a defence of the fascists or Nazis to talk about WW1 and the economic crises of the 20s and 30s when you are considering how they came to power?
200
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Oh yeah, it did way worse, but that's sort of my point. Putin, for all his immense faults, really did deliver Russians from the problems of the 90s. He offered prosperity in exchange of obedience and basically kept his end of the bargain. The Ukrainian leaders who offered the same didn't deliver.

Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Now, I'm not really sure there was grand alternative insofar as the interventions to support Yeltsin in 1996 were probably necessary to keep out Zyuganov who was hardly a cuddly social democrat but equally we shouldn't lie to ourselves about the way Russian democracy was killed.
220
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
In the mid-90s when powerful and influential people in our societies empowered the looting of the Russian economy Russia really did not have much power! Yes, this was an aberration and clearly not a long term situation, but it's ahistorical to say 'oh, well, Russia had a UNSC seat and nukes'
410
Peter Moore @petejmoore.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I mean I'm hardly either a Putin or Jones fan but this is just basically true? The change from Russians being excited about democracy to being excited for Putin a decade later runs right through the fact their economy collapsed in ways we can't quite imagine.

I don't doubt the private aspect, but I'd also say that - having a special needs child in Richmond of all places - an underrated element is inflation pushing affluent families to engage with a benefits system they once didn't think was worth getting caught up in.
