A #TombTuesday & #EpigraphyTuesday combined! Flavinus Tombstone The impressive Flavinus tombstone which is nearly 9ft high is housed at Hexham Abbey. It is likely to have come from the nearby Corbridge (Coria) to help build the original Anglo-Saxon church that stood here. #History #RomanBritain
It is dedicated to a Roman soldier named Flavinus. The inscription translates to:

To the venerated departed: Here Lies Flavinus a Horse rider of the cavalry regiment of Petriana. Standard bearer of the troop of Candidus. Aged 25, of 7 Years’ Service.

The tombstone depicts a mounted Roman (Flavinus) riding over a defeated 'barbarian', Flavius is holding a military standard. The tombstone clearly shows Roman dominance over the defeated Briton who is naked carrying a short sword and shield, the boot of Flavinus on the back of the defeated Briton is another sign of subjugation.

Although this is primarily a gravestone of a fallen Roman soldier, it is also seen as a form of propaganda. This symbolises the might of the Roman Empire, especially due to the sheer size of the tombstone.

Flavinus died during the late 1st century, during the early days of Roman expansion into northern Britain, at a time when the Stanegate Roman road was established. The cause of death is unknown.

The altar has been lit by yellow & red light to pick out the scroll work at the top with the name, the rectangular frame & the pattern at the bottom.
Thus showing that Roman altars were once coloured & not plain stone as seen in many museums.A Roman altar dedicated to the sea god Oceanus & showing his symbol of an anchor.
