The 12th cent Brough castle was built into the platform of Verteris Roman fort which guarded the Stainmore pass from the late 1st Century AD. The location of Maiden castle fortlet sits above the modern A66 with a good line of sight #RomanBritain

We only know her through a partial name “Ved[.]ic[..]” but she was a tribeswoman of the Cornovii in Shropshire close to the medieval town of Shrewsbury. She must have been of high rank or possibly married to an army officer and died aged 30 at the fort in Ilkley #Archaeology

Milecastle 42 at Cawfields was thankfully saved when the quarry to the west was still in operation but sadly a section of wall was lost and now terminates on the quarry edge #hadrianswall #archaeology #romanbritain

Having a dusk walk along the walls of the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum (Silchester) the town was built in the mid 1st century within an earlier Iron Age settlement, it was never built on after the end of Roman rule and its street grid can often be seen during a dry summer

One of the most fascinating periods of #Vindolanda was the Severan period when the stone fort was demolished and round houses built over the platform in groups of 10 back to back, Roman planning but Romano British in design. Excavation is revealing more of these structures.

The medieval stone robbers did a fairly comprehensive job removing the palatial Roman building currently being excavated at #Carlisle cricket club but this section of the southern wall is now seeing the light of day once again. The building dates to the early 3rd century.

The work to remove the upper layers and Victorian landfill has begun at #Carlisle Cricket club as the Uncovering Roman Carlisle Team return for a 6 week archaeological excavation. The site is currently being prepared and the official start is the 19th April. #HadriansWall

The south western corner of the legionary fortress of Eboracum (York) is still well preserved and the curve in the wall where the western and southern walls meet is still visible. Founded in the AD70’s as the legions pushed slowly northwards into the north of the country #york

The 7th cent crypt under #Ripon Cathedral is one of two built by St Wilfrid with the other in Hexham. Both were made of Roman stones. In the case of Ripon this came from nearby Aldborough known to the romans as Isurium
