Big day for me today. I took first place in the Men’s 45+ Debaets-Devos crit race. Winning means I’m the Michigan state champ!! I raced smart and got in a breakaway with a person from the largest team. We held off the field, and I took it in the end!

History tells me that coalitions fail when they grow narrower and narrower, until at last they are very pure - and very ineffective. A perfectly pure, perfectly unified, perfectly tiny political party (think the libertarians), is, in the end, just a very opinionated book club - one that regularly loses elections, but with great moral satisfaction

Coming down from the state house the green line is just visible enough to know where I’m going. It leads me right to the Cheesecake Factory and Panera bread. The American independence is palpable. These are the chains this country is built on. Independence score: 5/5

I’m on a bike path. I’m still off course. There are old wind turbines repurposed as benches and shelters. It’s fantastic but I’m still off course. Great views of the canal. In terms of following the trail, I’m failing. But I’m loving what I’m seeing. Independence score: 3/5
