Paladin’s Grace did in fact get me out of a several year, induced by covid, reading slump. I downloaded it to my kindle, started reading, and then suddenly it was Saturday evening and I’d read the whole book!

My rule is start the dishwasher before I go to bed if it isn’t already running. I don’t care how few dishes are in it, I will be happy to have clean dishes in the morning.

First, you reminded me of Voltaire’s song “bomb new jersey” and the line “Elizabeth still smells the same”. Second, my mother-in-law grew up in Tom’s River NJ in the 60s and they apparently would go swimming in the river in the colorful streams from the plants. *shudder*

Once I found out that there’s bovine tuberculosis and you can get it from raw milk I was never gonna drink it again. Nope. Of course, here in the US, the avian flu is also spreading unmonitored through the dairy herds so that’s great too.

almost nobody carries my shoe size in stores / many brands stop one size larger than my feet (us 5, many places start at 6) so I don’t have much choice.

I want you guys to do this to every other fad education book, please. I’d suggest Ruby Payne’s understanding poverty but I bet you can guess where that one is going. Every teacher I know was made to read it around 2012.

At the end, when you got to the part about actually kids just do better in school if we reduce poverty and feed them - I was just shouting in my car “ it always comes back to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs”.

Why are there so many of these people? Why do they get paid way more money than me to write books and give talks and be consultants about how to educate?

The way I, a veteran teacher, felt so seen, went towards the beginning Peter was like “ oh, she’s gonna be one of these people that taught for a couple years and then quit and then won’t shut up about it forever”!

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have made a HUGE breakthrough towards a UNIVERSAL antiviral. By targeting sugar molecules found on the surface of many viruses that SHARE structural similarities, they identified FOUR compounds that successfully BLOCKED infections from SEVEN different viruses.

so i don't live there now but i am From Philly, it's meaningfully part of me even 20+ years out and i'm not into hockey but this guy has transcended mere hockey mascot, imo. i've been thinking about this kind of treatment for him basically since go & especially since they doubled down on the flag-
scan of a gouache painting of Philly's mascot Gritty, a furry orange muppet with wild eyes, as a wrathful deity crowned with gold flames, dancing on modern imps of ignorance and cruelty, on the Columbia bridge over the Schuylkil, in front of a burning Cybertruck in the river, flanked by offerings of pretzels and Tastykakes. It holds up a progress flag on a hockey stick, a middle finger, a sprig of ginkgo, a big cup of Wawa coffee, one empty blessing hand, and a molotov cocktail ready to throw. The sky is pastel dawn colors over Fairmount Park.

Why Do Tabby Cats Have an “M” on Their Forehead? History & Legend - Catster
Tabby cats are unique in the feline world for their markings. Probably the most interesting one is the "M" on their forehead. So why do they have this?

Hahaha yes! I have heard that one! As you correctly discerned it is ridiculous and not true. Any cat with visible tabby markings can have an “M”. Has nothing to do with Maine Coon lineage.
Photo collage of seven pictures. They are cats of all different shapes and sizes and breeds and colors, but all of them are tabby, and all of them have a vague letter M shape on their forehead in the tabby pattern.

Cooking methods have changed too Far less braising, stewing, cooking to well done Why? Lots of changes to sanitation/hygiene We worry about pork because we KNEW that was a heat issue. Funny thing is the US hasn't had a case of trichinosis from commercial port in ~70 years. We could eat it rare.

SO MANY KIDS used to die Improvements in sanitation and vaccines were big, but pasteurization had a big impact too Pasteurization wasn't mandatory in the US until after WWII (exact year depends on the state)
Chart of childhood mortality ages 0-5, going from 450 per 1000 to close to 0 today

WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive GLOBAL study revealed COVID-19 vaccines utilizing mRNA technology PREVENTED OVER 2.5 MILLION deaths WORLDWIDE between 2020 and 2024. It reveals that vaccinations didn’t JUST protect against illness. They PRESERVED nearly 15 MILLION years of human life.

I see grocery/takeout shaming discourse going around again, so this is your periodic historian reminder that cooking from scratch daily while working has never been sustainable, and for millennia everyone either relied on takeout & restaurants or ate in huge households w/ big dorm-like group dining.

There's this cycle with American reactionaries where they are so desperate for a national purity that has never existed in the United States, not even at the first founding (let alone the second), we've always been the dumping ground for all the unwashed masses of the world (laudatory)

My great aunt’s DAR application was rejected the first time because the ancestor she named turned out to be a British loyalist but accepted the second time. My most recently immigrated ancestor came to the US in the 1840s. JD Vance can go fuck himself. The couch doesn’t want him.

What transit experts generally tell you is: the highest use of scarce resources is making transit service more *frequent & reliable*. That's what actually boosts ridership. Everything else -- free point-of-use fare, electric buses, fancy new trolleys, architecturally fancy stations -- matters less.

But berries, fruit, tomatoes, etc that are eaten fresh can't be automated w current technology. I know because I worked for a lot of the startups that tried! There's no way to pick fast enough by machine to be commercially viable, without bruising so they rot before they get to the store.

Oh, hmm, turns out in the years it took you to get the damn harvester to market—and yes, it would take years, multiple, even with the magic memo—all the farmers went under because their crops rotted in the fields because harvesting is not unskilled labor, and now watermelons cost $100 a piece!
