made a separate thread about this but i think the tipping point for me was realizing how much more fun it was to write ck3 mods the old fashioned way even if it was slower than having cursor do it for me

this year was kind of a breakthrough in terms of improvements to genAI coding, especially for simple web apps & debugging (i started looking into it during interviews bc so many companies wanted to know how i was using it) but in any long-term or principled viewpoint, it’s not worth it imo

anyway, allll of that said: after over 18 months of unemployment, i might actually get, tomorrow, the offer i’ve been interviewing for since early august 😵‍💫 at a startup that is proudly AI-first 😵‍💫

but i say CAN be because in reality it rightfully tarnishes your entire project it pisses off your creatives it worsens all manner of inequality & injustice it boils the planet and it is run by, and enriches, some of the worst mass murderers in human history so, ya know 🤷🏽‍♀️

i think it can be useful for things like prototyping, esp in a games context, where you want to quickly check whether a certain loop or concept is actually fun to play

all you’re doing is telling the bot to do a thing, and tabbing away to bsky or ck3 while it does its thing and it’s competent enough (if your codebase is small, & relatively greenfield, & has few concurrent contributors, & uses a well-known language/framework, &&& etc)

you don’t get better at any of the tasks that you’ll actually use to read/maintain code, which is what you’ll do for 90% of your career you don’t even get better at writing code

but once you have that prototype, you have to actually maintain the code, & build on it, & trying to do so on a codebase you effectively know nothing about, by design, is soul sucking

for standard small-scale web dev, it speeds things up to an extraordinary degree, no doubt think pair-programming with a junior engineer that is prone to mistakes but also has the entire internet at their fingertips (and with the current state of search engines, it is better at search)

they managed to make computer no longer fun. computer!!
