there's a lot of astronomy ML already obv but it looks like OP was quite intentional about using it as a falsifying tool instead of trying to reinvent gravity or wtv

I work on exoplanets - i don't want to rain on your parade because this is very cool, but the tool is probably not needed. Astronomers already use a ton of different ML tools for transit searches and validation. Its mildly surprising that SPOC didn't generate a TCE for this since the host is bright, but the S/N of this candidate is pretty borderline if you use their CDPP for this star.

That being said, make sure you submit this to ExoFOP as a Community TESS Object of Interest! Its basically a list of candidates found by people and projects outside of the NASA and MIT pipeline. Because this is pretty bright, one of the recon spectroscopy teams might follow up on it.

Dude, students did protest. The universities called the police and some of them got expelled. Protest is nominally illegal in the US.

David Ho @davidho.bsky.social • 16h

No. A few students in the US protested. I was on the Columbia campus and I saw the camp. Most of the students just went about their business. Here in France, it's all the school and many more students.

It's a quintessential French experience when your institution is blockaded by protesting students.

This is precisely what American students should have done when their institutions began capitulating to the Trump regime.

from the english collective of prostitutes, in response to monica coghlan's death (from the internet archive: web.archive.org/web/20070313...)
The Guardian, England,
from the English Collective of Prostitutes

Letter to the Editor

20 July 2001

The Editor,

At last, a vindication of the rights of Monica Coghlan, a working class woman who came to court 14 years ago and told the truth about Jeffrey Archer. Ms Coghlan like many other women in the eighties fled the poverty of the North and went into prostitution in London to support her young child.

In court Ms Coghlan, of mixed race, was branded by her sex, race and class and by the prostitution laws which label and condemn women. Her evidence was dismissed. Lord Archer, crook, liar and conman, was protected from the allegation of having been her client, by his sex, race, powerful class connections and money. It was she who was sullied by his company, not he by hers.

Ms Coghlan's is the story of most sex workers who end up in court, whether as witnesses or facing charges. People are vocal in condemning Jeffrey Archer now, but there is no regret that they allowed her victimisation in the earlier trial. Ms Coghlan had been hounded, first by the press, then by the tax man.

Her family whom she had sought to protect was sorely shaken. Supporting a child by working on the street is apparently not as fragrant as being the wife of a millionaire liar, and not as deserving of justice.

We hope that Ms Coghlan's son knows that many people believed and defended his mother at the time. We deeply regret that she is not here to be vindicated.

The Star will sue for compensation. How will Ms Coghlan's son be compensated for the unjust slander of his mother?

This trial, part of the clean-up of the Thatcher years, is bound to reveal other corruption and worse in high places. It is a warning to those who, having power now, think they can get away with murder.

In respectful memory of Monica Coghlan,

English Collective of Prostitutes

laughably poor analysis of the current state of government every institution that was supposed to prevent a despot has either voluntarily abdicated its power or was defunded via the libertarian/small-c conservative ethos that you think will magically fix things peak economist brain (derogatory)
My libertarian-leaning friends have consistently argued against a powerful federal government in favor of individual freedoms. I had - somewhat naively - never taken their views seriously enough. My friends who worked in government were good people, I reasoned, and surely that's true more broadly.

But I've had to admit to my libertarian friends that they were right. Concentration of power can be abused. We're seeing it happen right now.

And that's led me to become more small-c conservative. The old conservative idea was that we have rules of the game that have served us well for generations. We should be slow to change them. Our children should be handed the same set of opportunities we had, if not better ones.

"secular version of damnation" ?? are we being serious? his patreon is still up, making over 70k a year he's still a published author what consequences, imminent or present, is he facing besides "stop making video essays for a while"
If we believe they are, then we should stop claiming to believe in rehabilitation. We should admit that what we actually believe in is a secular version of damnation, the foundational myth that one sufficiently terrible act fixes the human being permanently in place, that everything afterward is merely biography occurring after the verdict. I cannot accept that regressive worldview, even here - perhaps especially here, in a moment where simply accepting it (i.e. excommunicating Jacob Geller immediately) would be the easiest path forward.

pebbles @pebbles.gay · 03/10/2026
again, this man is not at risk of cast into a "nothing afterwards matters" place. he's already done well for himself, and, as this article itself states, cleared the very low moral bar of acknowledging he did it, so half the people talking about him already consider him absolved
What I do know is that Jacob Geller sexually assaulted someone.
He cannot undo that. His statement does not undo it. Ten years do not undo it. A decade of admirable public work, to whatever extent we judge it admirable, does not undo it either. But "cannot be undone" and "nothing afterward matters" are not the same notion.
1474
pebbles @pebbles.gay · 03/10/2026
the reality that this "rehabilitative society" does not exist would be very relevant if we were talking someone serving life for a drug charge or wtv instead of a rapist who, after ten years of making a LOT of money being a public figure, will now make less
A society that claims to believe people can change must construct some imaginable future for people who actually do. Otherwise, every incentive points in the opposite direction. Why admit wrongdoing if admission and denial ultimately produce the same permanent identity? Why undertake the humiliating work of confronting what you have done if nothing you become afterward can possess moral significance? Why should someone who has caused harm believe in rehabilitation when the rehabilitative society itself demonstrably does not?
1464
pebbles @pebbles.gay · 03/10/2026
my problem with this is it's a call to resist a belief that is never—has never been in—danger of being fulfilled i don't think "will this man have to stop being a public figure" is relevant at all to conversations about retributive justice
None of this requires MinnMax to rehire Geller, nor Cane and Rinse to restore his archive. Institutional association is not a human right, and consequences are not synonymous with vengeance. What it does require, at least for me, is resisting the intoxicating simplicity of believing that maximizing someone's suffering is identical to maximizing justice.
1493
pebbles @pebbles.gay · 03/10/2026
i'll say it: yes, that *is* the principle consider the women who worked with him, who had to disavow him explicitly this week bc they were blindsided by his ambiguous "i've disclosed to those close to me" statement how many survivors found out this week they've been supporting a rapist on patreon
If the principle is that someone who has committed sexual assault should never again possess a public career, then we should at least have the courage to articulate that principle explicitly and confront what it means. If that is not our principle, then we eventually need a more sophisticated vocabulary for the conditions under which someone who committed terrible harm can continue existing in society without their continued existence being interpreted as an injustice.

it's probably good that not many countries make their registries publicly accessible and even fewer put you on them for pissing outdoors
By then, Wetterling had watched the registry evolve into something very different from what she'd fought to create. The database was no longer for the private use of law enforcement. Nor was it confined to high-risk offenders or adults who targeted kids. (In some states, the registry pooled juveniles and those charged with public urination together with adults who had repeatedly raped children.) It also imposed a costly burden on law enforcement-time and money that might have gone for supervision of the highest-risk offenders and the training of officers in preventive measures.

pebbles @pebbles.gay · 29/09/2026
or that this improved the lives of anyone involved, not least the seven-year-old who was abused
But vigilantism, too, has found opportunity in transparency. Most state registries publish an explicit warning against using the database for so-called citizen justice. To judge from my conversations with more than forty youth registrants and their families, however, these warnings have done little to prevent threats and violent attacks. Mike Grottalio, in Weatherford, Texas, told me how his daughter, who was sexually abused by her brothers when they were ten and twelve (and she was seven), had suffered further because of her siblings' registration. After the boys returned from two years of detention, the family dog was shot to death by a neighbor. Then the local paper ran their names and address under the headlines "COUNTY SEX-OFFENDER ROUNDUP" and, later, for Halloween, "KNOW WHERE THE MONSTERS ARE." More recently, a Molotov cocktail spilled flames across the family's driveway, and BB-gun pellets were fired at their home's vinyl siding after a neighbor passed out warning flyers. "It's made outcasts of our whole family," Grottalio said of the registry. "The damage has been done. There's no repairing it."

like, you cannot convince me this is the right way to handle twelve-year-old children convicted of crimes
At the age of twelve, DuBuc arrived in juvenile court for a series of hearings. Her father, a mechanic, drove her to the courthouse, but he didn't fully grasp the implication of the charges. (DuBuc's interviews with authorities often occurred without the presence of a parent or a guardian.) Moments before stepping in front of a judge, DuBuc met with her court-appointed attorney, alone. She remembers giggling when she had to say the words "penis" and "vagina," and when her fingerprints were taken, she told me, "I felt like I was in a movie."

The Situation Room connected the call. Biden jumped in. "Bibi, man, what the fuck are you doing?" He gripped the phone tight. "You think I'm Santa Claus? No Santa in Israel, pal." When Netanyahu asked what he meant, Biden said he could cut off military aid to Israel with the snap of a finger, leaving the country on its own. Netanyahu retorted that Israel would defend itself even without the United States. (We later learned that he concluded from this call that we were cutting military supplies.)
