IT’S PUBLICATION DAY! (UK) I’m so excited to see this labour of love finally out in the world! How better to spend today than at an earthworm research conference 🪱 🧪 If you’re in the UK, THE WORLD BENEATH OUR FEET is in bookshops now! Coming soon to North America and EU. @hodderbooks.bsky.social

Every four years, the international earthworm research community gets together to exchange ideas. This time, we’ve taken over Wageningen for #ISEE13, and it’s been a blast! Here’s a few highlights, including my earthworm Macrophotography workshop 📸🪱 @pdejong.bsky.social @helenherself.bsky.social

Want to see billionaire brainwashing in action? Seven out of ten Brits are big fans of renewable energy and want to see lots more of it. But they think the majority of people DON’T support it. That disconnect isn’t an accident. 🧵

If someone tells you the CO2 is coming out of the sea, they try to fool you. We know exactly where it comes from and where it goes. We emit CO2, about half of that stays in the atmosphere, and a quarter each is taken up by oceans and forests. Measured facts! globalcarbonbudget.org/gcb-2025/

A December week between some final field work and presenting earthworm C balance results at the Swiss Geosciences Meeting. 🌲🧪🌍🪱
A man in muddy rain clothes sits next so a shallow soil pit in which mustard solution has been poured to extract deep-burrowing earthworms. A man walks on a forest road covered in snow carrying boxes on his back. A man gives a talk on the earthworm effect on the c cycle in forests.

World Soil Day: How earthworms “dispose” of CO2 in the soil
The Swiss soil of the year 2025 is characterized by earthworms. WSL researchers are investigating how their activity affects forest soils.

🎁Christmas came early at WSL: Our researchers unwrapped the wrapped tree on the WSL premises and collected its isotope-marked leaves for their research projects.🍁 More info in the how and why in our Instagram post: www.instagram.com/p/DC6fuQFoVb... @pdejong.bsky.social 📷 Philipp de Jong

Hi! I’m a Phd student in soil science and biogeochemistry studying organic matter cycling in forest soils. Also interested in all things isotopes. And I have a fable for earthworms 🪱!
