Calling AI bots "agents" like me laying the showerhead down in the bath, turning on the shower full-blast and then crying "THE SHOWERHEAD IS A ROGUE AGENT!" to explain why the entire bathroom is now soaking wet and everything got knocked over.

Last position I filled it was 600 out of 700 pure slop resumes, and I looked at every one of them. It was so depressing

The zero sum illusion was so prevalent at my last academic position. I was always so sad/frustrated by the folks who acted like my success was somehow a detriment to them.

From the article: “People who go all in on AI agents now are guaranteeing their obsolescence. If you outsource all your thinking to computers, you stop upskilling, learning, and becoming more competent.” – Jeremy Howard, creator of fast.ai

AI was supposed to make our lives better and give us more freedom to do the things that make being human great. Instead we're making low-quality, insecure software, decreasing economic stability, and burning down the world to make rich people think they're doing something earth-shattering.

CyberSecurity: A major supply chain attack every day this week because AI makes it easier than ever to find vulnerabilities. That open-source package that half the internet depends on will have to add AI security tools because they don't have the time/money to keep up with the increasing exploits!

Software Engineers: I'm so productive now that AI writes all my code for me! I've even forgotten how to properly review code since my agents are so much more thorough than I could ever be. As long as I write good instructions I'll surely still have a job...

Tech companies left and right: We're reducing our headcount by 30% because we are using AI everywhere! We don't need as many experienced folks because AI agents can review the other AI agents! Now we can ship even more AI features that no one is asking for!

AI companies: Massively unprofitable, propped up by hopes, dreams, and investors crossing their fingers on future payoffs. If we just buy everything we can now, no one else will be able to compete with us! Who cares what people actually use the AI for!

More context on this #Artemis II image: * This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right * The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon: ☀️🌍🚀🌕
A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

MIT’s NANDA initiative found that 95% of generative AI deployments fail after interviewing 150 execs, surveying 350 workers, and analyzing 300 projects. The real “productivity gains” seem to come from layoffs and squeezing more work from fewer people not AI.

MIT report: 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing
There’s a stark difference in success rates between companies that purchase AI tools from vendors and those that build them internally.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

I never understand these. We can always tell when you have an LLM during an interview! I wanna meet the person, not the AI. And if you can’t write some toy code without assistance I’ll be really worried when you get to an actual complex application.

I am convinced 99% of websites should use magic links + passkeys. It bypasses all (debatable) portability objections to passkeys, it’s at least as secure as email-based recovery, as fast as a password manager, it’s available to all users… and importantly, no passwords!
