Went to the Reality Fractured prerelease and had a wonderful time! Set has been so much fun, especially the Empower Jace mechanic! Thought I wouldn't care but ended up being the main gimmick of my deck lol Best part? I got some new cards for the cube! Lots of fun looking blue cards! #mtgcube #mtg

Commander was supposed to be a hyper-casual break from the normal, competitive scene. If you actually play it like that, I think it would be great. But that's just not been my experience.

There's also a lot of social factors at play, to be fair. I know that we don't have to play commander all the time, but there are players in my group who just always want to play commander and I'm frankly just sick of it. Maybe I'd enjoy commander more if we played it as it was conceived.

Skill is still a factor, but it all goes out the window when someone is able to convince the rest of the table that you're the threat and you just lose. I know commander is supposed to be casual. So maybe this is just how my group is. But we try to build good, synergistic decks.

Because whenever we do cube draft or something, the best part is building something with the cards you draft. It really tests your understanding of synergies and the micro advantages you need in a normal, 20 life, 1v1 game. That shit feels so good to master!! I just don't get that from commander

But in commander, I almost always feel some level of frustration. It took me a minute to unpack it, but I think it comes down to the free-for-all nature of the game. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's just my group, maybe it's something else entirely. I used to think I just hated deckbuilding.

So, if I really try to build a good deck, I feel like I get punished for it and get dogpiled. But if I just throw shit together, then I don't perform well in games. I almost never get salty during pre-releases or drafts because of this. I could get mana screwed like an MF, but that's just the game

A huge reason why I love games like magic or fighting games is because I LOVE the "skill acquisition" that comes with them. Playing to understand mechanics, matchups, deck synergies, and all that is so gratifying. It's also just fun to learn the history of the game and its community!

Whenever my group plays, someone gets dogpiled and it feels bad to me, no matter who it is. I hate bullying a single player and I hate when I get bullied. It's a lose/lose for me. I don't get that feeling in 1v1 because that's the game! You play to win! But it goes a bit further than that.

A standard game of Commander is 4 players, free for all. In direct contrast to every other format which is 1v1. This, almost inevitably, leads to someone being dogpiled on. A major factor in commander is "threat assessment." You gotta be able to determine who the biggest threat is.

One thing that I don't see many people talking about is how the lower graphical fidelity had more character with the hunters and NPCs. Back in Tri or 4U, the animations were much more expressive because you couldn't show facial detail like Wilds. So much more goofy and I just miss that shit
