Another nice review of Spectacles of Waste, this time in Isis, up front. 'Pungent, playful, and consistently thought-provoking.' Thanks Paul Kreitman! @isisjournal.bsky.social #histsci #histmed #histstm #STS

This was a surprise—a thoughtful and knowledgeable backgrounder on the Taiwan and Hong Kong political struggles, with an unexpected detour to.. Columbia University

Glad to see this double review by @paulkreitman.bsky.social finally out... "For all these reasons, the distance between here and Hong Kong feels less like a chasm than a gap."

A great review piece. And not just because of the following sentences in it: "It is hard to imagine [Jimmy Lai] will not die in prison. But who knows what the future has in store? Just look at Taiwan."

"Pour paraphraser D. Graeber les historiens peuvent ns dire pourquoi le colonialisme s’est produit, mais les sociologues peuvent ns dire que faire à ce sujet. C'est l'approche adoptée par Ching Kwan Lee ds *Pour toujours Hong Kong : la lutte d'une ville mondiale pour la décolonisation* (2025)"

Students were peacefully protesting the forced starvation and aerial bombardment of a civilian population. The university’s president had them suspended and arrested by the NYPD. This makes me ashamed to work at Columbia.

A tragically prescient cartoon from Nov. 1943—a year before major air raids began in earnest—about a “Fire fighting suicide corps” [Housewife]: “I’m a member of a fire fighting suicide corps. We are working hard on practicing because without air defense training we can’t respond to an emergency.”
