Incidentally some of my graduate work involved writing my own natural language processing code, which is how I know that anyone calling LLMs "AI" is either unaware of how they work (and their funadmental, inherent limitations), or intentionally overselling them in bad faith.

I have a Master's degree (and am basically ABD towards a PhD) in educational technology and, to summarize, the vast majority of it is very bad.

They seemed OK from what I could tell, but of course they have lots of athletic trainer support and for all I know the dugouts have some cooling. Now I'm curious about ushers and concession workers and the like, though.

This is unironically one of my most deeply held beliefs. We do too much. There is much to do, yes, especially because there's always so much harm and cruelty and evil being done that has to be undone. But at the core of building a better (and more sustainable) world is doing less.

Having a (covid safe) get together with some new friends this weekend and I'm the chef. The challenge is, collectively, I have to solve for: vegetarian, lactose intolerant, nightshade allergy, hates mushrooms, and gluten sensitivity So, I'm having to get pretty creative. Wish me luck.

My partner needs accomodations for a brain injury, but if a hirer knows that too early she might get ghosted despite being great for the job. Even after being hired for her current position (where she is deeply appreciated by her colleagues) it was so hard to figure out when and how to disclose.

Paul Franz @paulfranz.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
People who have not experienced it are often not aware of just how vicious hiring processes are to the disabled. "When do I tell them about my disability?" is an agonizing tactical conversation my partner and I have had too many times. Hirers will absolutely use it to disqualify people summarily.

It is so hard to have to wear a mask in 2026. People who might have done out of solidarity two years ago would rather lose toes now. Even people who might understand roll their eyes when we insist, because yeah, your “just allergies” might fucking kill us. The least you can do is not mock us.

Chronically ill and disabled people have been wholly abandoned, hundreds of millions of people (+ growing) have long covid and/or new health problems triggered by infection, kids don't have clean air in schools, people can't even access safe healthcare

Governments everywhere declared the pandemic over without cleaning indoor air, public health didn't explain how COVID spreads or the long term risks of infection (+ reinfections), we’ve all been forced back to normal (but with covid in the air) and large accounts here are dunking on people

So much this. My partner is disabled and high risk for Covid complications. We both mask in all public spaces, and the amount of non-reciprocated empathy and emotional labor we are required to exhibit in conversations with our families has been, in some ways, the hardest part.

hey just fyi if you think it's funny to mock people who mask and treat us as hysterical killjoys, you're doing the work of the fascists and you don't get to call yourself an ally of disabled people (or any marginalized group, really) because you're being a foot soldier of the oppressor class

You got what you wanted! You are living your normal lives, as demanded, free of legal or social responsibility toward disabled people who are still at high risk. Now you’re going to laugh at us trying to find ways to keep going? That’s not just discrimination, that’s dehumanization.

I imagine your season has been tough thanks to the burden of expectations. The last several years of Rockies fandom have been weirdly liberating, because you know how bad the team is, and you can just sit back and enjoy those occasional moments when your non-existent expectations are exceeded.

We're watching the same game, and let me tell you how nice it is to watch an opposing team that fields as badly as we (the Rockies) do.

Especially because what people usually mean by "harm reduction" is, at best, reduction in the rate at which the amount of harm is accelerating. As in, the car will go from 80 mph to 90 mph instead of going from 80 mph to 100 mph. Either way, it's still speeding towards a metaphorical cliff.

Good thread. In addition to being mathematically impossible for an algorithm to do with reliable accuracy, summarization with an aim towards avoiding reading is simply not a worthwhile goal. The point of reading great research, analysis, or literature is to read the *whole* of it, not to summarize.

Consistently masking at conventions is unpleasant, uncomfortable, and sometimes chafes my ears. But as I have not added severe illness to this year's carousel of exhaustion, I am glad to continue doing it, and continue to recommend it to my peers.

This is the big thing that continuously frustrates me about current AI discourse. Before even getting into the myriad socio-political reasons why AI is bad (all valid!), we should not cede the ground that AI is actually capable of doing what its proponents say it is capable of. Because it isn't.

Reliably accurate algorithmic summarization of text is *mathematically* impossible, because algorithms cannot operate on intention, meaning, or semantics and are restricted to operating on grammar and phonemes. This basic mathematical reality completely undermines basically all AI advertising.

I guess I never said on here that Lucy crossed the rainbow bridge. It was two months ago and Melissa and I still miss her. She was a beautiful, busted, perfect mess of a dog, and the five years we had with her were a blessing. Here she is (middle) a few days before her diagnosis, with some friends.
Lucy, an elderly beagle, stands at the edge of a yard in between Gracie (who is facing the camera) and Charlie (who is looking the other way). All three are wearing harnesses and are on leashes, since Melissa and I ran into these friends of Lucy's on a walk.

Ministry for the Future was a rare DNF for me. When I gave up on it I described it to my partner as a book for people who care about climate change but don't know anything about it, by a writer who cares about good prose but doesn't know how to write it. What broke me was it taking crypto seriously.

Cooking: "Here's a recipe; as long as you have about half of these ingredients - or reasonable substitutes - and use between 0.5 and 3X the recommended amounts, you'll probably produce something good. Baking: "Here's a recipe; if you deviate by a single teaspoon your oven will literally explode."

To be fair I legitimately enjoy those 45 minutes of thinking about campaigns I could play. It's one of the best "in theory, if I could just get into the right mood, this would be epic" games in my library. I've come to terms with that. Even if I rarely actually play it, it still serves its purpose.

For me it goes like this: Step 1) Free up ~100 GB of hard drive space Step 2) Wait two hours to download and install Warhammer 3 Total War Step 3) Open the game and comb through the faction selection screen for 45 minutes Step 4) Exit game and uninstall
