A couple of colourful and obliging Sicilian Wall Lizard (Podarcis waglerianus) - endemic to Sicily. Many thanks @paulhoskisson.bsky.social for identification, via @matthutchings.bsky.social
A colourful, slender-bodied lizard with chequered lime and black upper parts and grey belly and tail. The lizard is standing in dense dry grass between two limestone rocks.A Sicilian Wall Lizard seen from above, on fine grey and black gravel at a road-margin. Showing a pattern of lime / black markings on upper parts and forelimbs, and grey-black patterning on hind legs and upper tail.

Moorland association stating conclusions not from the paper. Study found Water Extractable Organic Material concentrations consistent across wildfires of different intensity and prescribed burns. Where is the evidence that regular controlled burns produce less ash overall than occasional wildfires?

This willow grove, arose from a single tree toppled by the October 1987 storm - 38 yrs on 13 trunks from distal branches form a grove c20 m across. The 2-3 m high stump we sat on then, to watch the sunset, has disappeared. Ecology is dynamic, life is change.

Leaving ‘habitat piles’ condemns that patch of fen to become nettle bed. Biomass removal from fen hay, litter, fuel was key to these habitats for millennia.

In Norwich they arrested Santa under the terrorism act. And an elf. For showing solidarity with the oppressed and upholding the right to nonviolent political action.
A group of brightly dressed activists, sitting on the public benches of the Haymarket in Norwich. Many holding signs opposing genocide and in support of a nonviolent direct action group who, after successfully opposed Israeli arms manufacturing company, Elbit Systems, where proscribed as a Terrorist group by the UK Government for hypothetical future thought crime. Central in this picture is Sanata Claus holding a sign with the crucial 5 words. And an elf.

Great to see this cutting and scrub removal from a local fen. But habitat piles and burn sites destined to become nettle bed (already abundant), reducing the fen extent. Where possible, biomass removal is preferable.

I had no words to say to the owner of an off-lead dog, that attacked our Labrador, unprovoked, while on a close-lead, at Froggatt Edge, Derbyshire #PeakDistrict late October. She recovered after two courses of antibiotics but was extremely unwell from the infection. Keep dogs under control.

But beware generalising from a single study site. In a meta-analysis of wader nest camera studies in UK (Yellow in graph, 356 predation events) badger were the predominant predator of clutches. Same true for passerines. #ornithology

In woodland, 117 nest predation events were identified on camera, but with rather (very) few different passerine species monitored. More nest camera studies would really improve our evidence base.

Quality conservation habitat creation. Starts with the mineral soil and maximum nutrient removal; slows succession, many more generations ea. niche/ micro habitat available, allows colonisation & peak populations. Fab.
