From the archives, 14 years ago: a doomed campaign by a tobacco lobby group, hiding their identity (one might even say they were attempting to pass it off as a dot gov dot uk poster). Fat lot of good it did them, thankfully.
A campaign poster showing a graphic picture of an eyeball on a cigarette packet, and trying to steer people away from 'plain packaging'

An abstracted night scene of Waterloo Bridge in foreground, National Theatre in background. The camera has been supported during a very long exposure, then deliberately shaken to create a circular streaking effect on all lights, stationary and moving. The main colours are red and deep blue.

Love this city
A half moon over the Palace of Westminster. A night scene looking south down the river Thames. In the foreground, The Golden Jubilee Bridge looks like the faint tracery of a blue spider's web.

In Whitstable, and my strongest memory of this town is the picture of the hairdresser's sign I took 15 years ago. Don't know if it's still there.
A sign for Gina's hair salon. A graphic of scissors are snipping the G to create a V shape. So it sort of spells VGINA'S

Filey Brigg: a little spike of Yorkshire jabbing into the North Sea. I learnt on this trip that until WW1 it was mostly called "The German Sea", but obviously that needed some rapid revision for obvious reasons. Not sure why 'East' wasn't a better description though?
A seascape: late afternoon clouds with blue sky in between, and a foamy wash of sea on the left, rolling into a thin rocky headland on the right.

Doing some cataloguing and remembering the weirdness that happened 6 years ago this week
A protestor screaming next to Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square. She is protesting against COVID restrictions, and carries a cardboard sign saying "WHATS UR LEGAL FICTION?" - a reference to one of the tropes of the sovereign citizen movement

This is the most extraordinary piece of public art. Oversized and imposing, you see it from miles away, get close then ooof as you read the story. (story in alt text)
Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers: a statue by sculptor Ray Lonsdale which overlooks the North Bay of Scarborough, England. Made from weathering steel, the sculpture depicts Freddie Gilroy, a former soldier who participated in the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, sitting on a bench in his old age. Gilroy was a friend of the sculptor and Lonsdale made the piece partly as a tribute to him, but also as a wider war and Holocaust memorial. Originally intended to sit on the seafront as a 4-week loan in 2011, a local resident donated money to purchase the sculpture for the town. The statue is layered rusting steel, set against a late summer blustery blue sky.

On the headland
A photo of a lighthouse at sunset. The sky is lowering, troubled with dark clouds heavy with rain. The lighthouse light is lit. On the right of the frame the last glow of sunset burns orange.

I have this book, and a few instant camera pics (I was not by any means a photographer then). It has a very special page at the back.
Cover of the book "Building the Trireme" by Frank Welsh. One of my few photos, a silhouetted shot of the ship and crew, is lying on top of the book.page 217 of the book. Appendix 1: The Crew. My name is in the central column, about 2/3 of the way down the page.

Eventually a combination of historians, naval architects and deep-pocketed funders decided there was only one way to settle it. Build one and do experiments. No blueprints as such, but plenty of bits of broken pot as a starting point for the design. So they built Olympias. Sexy little craft.

My cubs & scouts leader, folks (amazingly, he was whisked from the parish overnight for er unstated reasons and it was announced he'd become a monk. Just like that. Got him out of town. Then the church sent him to work in...a boarding school. They knew. They all fucking knew, didn't they?)
