Funnily enough, "bread prices skyrocketing >> the French Revolution" happened bc the French monarchy put "helping farmers"* as their top priority, over "keeping food prices sane." The things you can learn from history!

Long but very important thread. Ebola outbreaks will not be ended by "leaving the reservoir alone". Humans interface with nature, including in ways we don't notice. Pretending "if only people in Africa would leave the forests alone we'd all be fine" is pretty patronizing 😳

Tl;dr there's a lot of "why THOSE places have disease": they're dysfunctional" in pop culture. The reality is boring. It's just poverty. The same poverty that drives most other problems.

We don't actually have real data tying Ebola outbreaks to *deforestation.* We do have data that people being in/around forests makes outbreaks more likely. ....Forests have been people's homes for thousands, even up to maybe millions of years.

People can get infected by screwworm. But we tend to notice there's a problem & deal with it! The only people who stay infected with screwworm long enough to actually be a mode of travel for them... are generally people who are paralyzed and/or comatose, and whose caretakers are checked out.

Did a short on "Why IS screwworm is moving north these days?" Ye olde right-wing media is blaming migrants for carrying it to the US, because that's what RWM. In real life? It's probably cows. youtube.com/shorts/IaaCi...
Thumbnail for the video, vertical format. Top 1/3 is a map of screwworm moving northward through central America. Middle 1/3 is a guy pushing cows onto a truck. Bottom third is a caption, "How screwworm is MOOOOOving north (it's probably cows)"

Our county isn't well-off. But here's what we do have: multiple swing districts. In a swing state. It matters SO MUCH to have our county board of elections be competent & fair.

I've been thinking about responsibility for what AI does and I keep thinking of the owner. My in-laws had a dog that occasionally slipped away and had him some chickens. My inlaws paid restitution for the birds eaten. The dog worked under its own initiative. But they were still responsible.

It's a well established tactic. In 1982 or 83 the Reagan White House declared building an oil pipeline in Washington State was a matter of national security. The Republican Governor of Washington said that this is news to her and insisted that the feds explain why. I don't believe that it was built.
