Petrol price crisis? Tomorrow @octopus.energy will pay me about £5 to fully charge my car! 😆 Their ‘Agile’ tariff changes price every 30mins with demand, sometimes going negative. Hopefully this is genuinely interesting, but here’s my spammy £50 referral link too: share.octopus.energy/ore-dodo-899
Graph timeline showing tomorrow’s electricity prices which are negative until 4pm, meaning we get paid to use electricity. Time to charge all the batteries!

Surely the basis for the article (or at least the headline) is that it would be ridiculous for an organisation with America in its name to not include America. Correcting the title but leaving the article is a weird correction. It’s correcting as if it’s a typo, not as if it’s a misunderstanding.

Is there a word for the recent phenomenon where us customers get tracking systems that show staff gaming their impossible-to-meet performance targets in real time? Like that notification for a delivery attempt that your doorbell camera somehow completely missed.

Apparently my payroll account gets deactivated due to inactivity if I don’t log in to it at least once a month. Who is downloading their (monthly) payslips more than once a month?! 🤪

I went curling yesterday while on a work trip to Toronto. 🥌 It was great fun! I thought it would be like bowling but it’s much more in depth. Surprisingly physical, and now every part of me hurts. (to the point where I’ve been told at home to stop moaning!)

Monzo you literally lost 3 new customers who would have signed up today, by being harder to get in touch with than high street banks to answer a simple question. Being impossible to contact is a huge red flag.

Paul @paulannett.com · 01/11/2025
Probably doesn't matter as it seems there's nobody there to answer once you're through the maze of options. And no human gets back to you on their in-app chat (waiting 24h so far). This is worse customer service than the high street bank my parents are trying to switch away from.

It seems like @monzo.com's phone menu doesn't recognise tones being sent from any iOS device I've tried. Phone bug? Monzo bug? Works on an Android device.

I’ve been vibe coding a thing that I’m really pleased with so far. If you own a stack of domains for side projects you’ll get to one day, you might enjoy this too!

False advertising from Europcar: I booked an EV for a holiday in Spain. Website says "no recharge required" – the collection desk argued I must recharge it before returning it, and finally caved when I showed them the website. I get home, and – surprise surprise – they charged me for recharging. 🤷‍♂️

AI voice cloning scam calls – where scammers can record your voice to make an AI clone of it and then use that to scam your relatives. 👇 Presumably even your outgoing voicemail greeting might be enough for them to use if you don't answer their call. I've just deleted mine. 👀

If anything, it *teaches* them that 'their' can be used to refer to somebody when you don't yet know their gender.

It wouldn't store your content (other than in the browser cache for that one user) and it might give the user a rephrased version of your content if they've asked for it to be simplified or explained. But again, only for that one user, and never sent anywhere away from their device.

I took my 8-year-old daughter to the office on 'Take Your Kid To Work Day'. But when we walked in the office she started to cry. As concerned staff gathered round I asked her what was wrong and she said: "Daddy where are all the clowns you said you worked with?"

Stop eating your lunch at your desk. Go and have an actual proper lunch break. Nobody gives a shit that you keep working on your lunch break, least of all your boss. It's not going to get you a promotion, but it is going to burn you out.

Saying somebody “will be missed” is so passive and inauthentic, like there’s a silent “but not by me” at the end. If it was heartfelt it would be “I will miss them” or “many of us will miss them”. Same with saying “my apologies” instead of “I’m sorry”.

A frustrating conversation with Claude AI, where it acknowledges that its response ignored my repeated and very clear instructions.

Actually “contact sales” means everybody gets a different price depending on how much they reckon they can squeeze out of you.

“Contact sales” means it’s too expensive. “Join a demo” means it’s too hard to expect users to figure out on their own.

Spent a little time today creating a BlueSky sidebar extension for Firefox. Still need to iron out some bugs and make it possible to interact with posts in it (it's view-only at the moment), but this could be nice 🙂
My 'compose post' screen on the BlueSky site open, with my home feed shown in the sidebar to the right thanks to my newly created Firefox extension.
