This. Is. Not. Journalism. - It's letting Farage shine. I genuinely do not understand why the BBC does not seem to be able to competently challenge Reform and Farage.

I think the general consensus of people around the world is that Americans can get fooled by a con man once, but to return him to power a 2nd time after having seen his corruption, incompetence, ignorance, & buffoonery, the problem isn’t just Trump it’s the American people.

I simply do not understand the mentality of people who prefer oil and gas and "drill baby drill" to the cost of the Earth and our pockets... to those of us who want clean, cheap, renewable energy. How brainwashed by big oil and its (often) paid advocates do you have to be? How gullible.

This is a dreadful development in our politics, which is bound to see dodgy & illegal lobbying now go unnoticed. And I say this as someone who, 20 years ago, was included in the register of MPs’ staff interests, when I worked for an MP. I never begrudged my inclusion on the register.

Cameron's EU renegotiation: no plan. Brexit itself: no plan. May when triggering Article 50: no plan. Johnson on the Irish border and Brexit deal: no plan. Johnson's extended prorogation: no plan. Starmer's Govt: no plan. There's a pattern here.

Feels like it’s not en vogue to say. But I agree entirely. The kick up the arse they need is that more indecision and platitudes to the far right is a losing strategy. This isn’t going to come from anything other than an existential shock.

You read the latest news about NATO, Iran, and Ukraine, and then you look to London with the current inner-Labour hissy fit, combined with a peevish PM devoid of direction or strategic thinking, and it all just seems maddeningly inward-looking and, dare I say it, provincial.

I think there is a risk of self imposed information suppression - Ministers and their SpAds want solutions not problems. So who knows whether it was flagged properly at the time. The inconceivable part for me is that at no point in the last X months did nobody remind anyone of this.

I'm going to take the rare step of contradicting Ivan Rogers on UK-EU relations. Because relations with the UK per se might not be in the top issues Brussels faces, but they feature in an awful lot of those. Coupled with renewed London thinking means some genuine possibilities.

You might be right. But how we got to the situation that arrived at was despairing, and it hasn’t got any better. So unless we “qualify” the vote when we know that social media might swing it, what’s the answer?

Paul Adamson @pauladamson.bsky.social · 31/01/2026
Except we give them the vote as well. Critical thinking = vote. Inability to do so = no vote. We should educate and qualify young people as they gain the vote and like the driving test check them again as they age. If they prove not fit to “drive” they lose their licence.
