A B&W photo of a person standing next to a stack of printed paper as high as the top of their head. This is Margaret Hamilton, at work as a Software Engineer and the leader of a team of extremely specialised programmers who worked for NASA. The photo was taken in 1969, and it shows a physical form if her work since she joined the Apollo project in 1965 (she joined at the age of 29 by my calculation). My interpretation of the expression on her face is a mix of pride and mild amusement. She has glasses, long, straight hair, and neat office attire. Margaret Hamilton has her hands placed gently on the stack of printouts to keep it all balanced upright. The pages appear to be arranged in bundles, ranging from 8-10 centimetres thick, to 20cm thick or more. The resulting stack of printouts is physically impressive for being an unusual feat, and it represents something even more impressive: it's the printed form of the source-code she and the team she led wrote for the NASA Apollo project. Their software ran on the Apollo Guidance Computer that was that on board each Apollo command module and Apollo Lunar Module. The Apollo Guidance Computer onboard the Eagle was an essential flight instrument for Neil Armstrong when he piloted the craft to land on the surface of the moon.

As we join the great theoretical scientist, he is deep in thought. So still, quiet and focused that he might almost be asleep. But inside that brilliant mind, what new idea is forming? What certainty is being meticulously interrogated? What ingenious theory is ready to change our world forever? (the scientist snores lightly) Ah, it seems he actually is asleep. And that's fine. Science is hard and not every day can be a success. We will come back another time.

Born of the coast • Hartlepool? Molson Coors has agreed heads of terms with Camerons Brewery as its preferred brewing partner for key Sharp's cask ale brands. (via Propel)
Text: Molson Coors confirms Sharp's Brewery will close by end of year:
US brewing firm Molson Coors has confirmed that Sharp's Brewery in Cornwall will close by the end of the year, with up to 40 jobs expected to be lost. In February, Molson Coors said it was proposing to shut Sharp's Brewery in Rock because the site was "no longer financially sustainable".

Molson Coors said production at the brewery, which produces Doom Bar, will cease in December following the conclusion of a consultation process launched earlier this year. The company said every alternative option had been considered but concluded the site was no longer financially sustainable as part of its national brewing network.

Since acquiring Sharp's in 2011, Molson Coors said it had invested more than £20m in the brewery, expanding production capacity, upgrading equipment and supporting the development of the company's brand portfolio. However, the company said changing consumer tastes and ongoing challenges facing the cask ale market had contributed to the decision.

The brewery's closure will mark the end of brewing operations at the Rock site, although Molson Coors said it is exploring a potential sale of the premises. The company has agreed heads of terms with Camerons Brewery as its preferred brewing partner for key Sharp's cask ale brands.
