Was I expecting Michael Jackson to have a cameo in a Saul Bellow novel? No I was not and yet there is getting into a lift in Ravelstein.

thinking about this tweet again, and the fact that it's got such a hold on me that I genuinely think about it whenever I write a feature because I don't want to do "the hot dog thing"

Out of curiosity, was it closer to a tidy-up or an extensive revision? (I will be pre-ordering either way)

Sadly not. He was doing a fundraising bike ride for the charity I was working for. But with cost of hotels, logistics etc I think we actually made a loss on it...

Hate to say it but I am intrigued by Nigel Farage's suggestion of 'Black velvet' (Guinness with a champagne top) as an accompaniment to oysters.

They seem to be paying much more attention to their distribution arm. I go through phases of stopping and restarting my membership. Currently in a pause.

Having just finished 'The Quantity Theory of Morality', I don't think it's very effective satire but, by casting himself as a character, Will Self shows he has much more self-awareness than I would have expected.

Colleague, emailing: 'Hope you're well Patrick! Could you review this document for me?' Me, replying: 'I will be damned if I propose to be at the beck and call of every itinerant scoundrel who has two cents to invest in a postage stamp.'

I'm afraid I've only ever taken the C10 and had broadly fine experience. One of the insights that most delighted me was the description of the opening of Mamma Mia as 'a mounting panic'

Compliments to @markabowles.bsky.social for a superb follow up to his debut. It's a stubborn book (in keeping with its narrator, Patrick) and refuses to reveal itself easily to the reader. Part of me is tempted to read it again backwards

I was forced to listen to: - 'Backroom Boogie' - 'Backroom Jive' - 'Backroom Slide' - 4 variations of 'Backroom Velvet' When 'Backseat boogie' started, I'd reached my limit and asked them to change it

Every song was identical - same key, same vocals, some instrumentation - just slight variations in the completely asinine lyrics.

Once went on holiday with someone who worked for, not the tourist board, but some kind of inward investment agency the council had set up. He really sold me on it.
