The USDA says it's rescinding the roadless rule to build roads to manage the lands to reduce the risk of forest fires. But roads increase the risk of fires. @patriciastrach.bsky.social and I say that this kind of pretextual public purpose is a clue to the way that governing itself is changing

Counties in states that expanded Medicaid under the ACA saw a 25% decrease in drug arrests, a 19% drop in “violent offense” arrests, and a 24% decrease in “low-level” offense arrests (Simes & Jahn 2022). Expanding public benefits leads to lower crime rates!

One of my students told a government official that local government is the most important government because it deals with things that affect people directly. Maybe it's time to listen to rather than discourage students.
