Music, theatre, movies, that sort of thing. I’ll try not to be intemperate. Really.

That was a good afternoon of picketing. Pleasantly surprised to see how much support and goodwill there was out there.

It’s just so ugly looking too. Inexplicably so.

It’s not just that it’s bad, it’s so insufferably pleased with itself.

"We can't just throw public money at nurses and teachers willy nilly," The Minister for Public Expenditure has said in a statement. "They're not data centres, race tracks, angry people with tractors, Mark Zuckerberg, the NFL..."

I enjoyed this. What struck me, watching it recently, about the show’s supposedly “troubling” treatment of race (and please forgive me, American friends) is that it understands that America’s problem isn’t just racism but its deep neurosis about its own racism.

It really worries me that all the other candidates are appalling ghouls of one stripe or another, but they’re all polling ahead of him. Early days, but still…

I really need to be more careful about using the words “Let me know if you have any questions”. I’m finally learning that the caveat, “once you’ve read the spec”, would be useful.

Nothing quite dilates your sense of time as much as the realisation that Eva Marie Saint was two years older than Marilyn Monroe.

Seven years ago today, I became a dad. I don’t think anything has ever made me as happy as getting to know my daughter. I hoped she would be as kind and funny as she is. It was always likely that she would love reading. But I would never have guessed that she would be utterly football mad. Life!

I was raised in a “butter on one slice” family, but then one day, when I was eighteen, the chef in the pub I was working in noticed me making a sandwich. “Patrick, this is not a student flat, we’re not going to run out of butter. Both slices, for God’s sake.” Thus I saw the light.

The compositional chops of Edgar Varèse, the instrumental ability of Johnny “Guitar” Watson and, alas, the outlook and sensibility of the most annoying fifteen-year-old boy you’ve ever met.

As someone who will probably "benefit" from this in the next few weeks, this is a bad idea. I'm not being "helped to buy". Taxes I've already paid, and that could've gone to funding basic services, will instead be funneled to the wealthy developer of an overvalued property.

In times gone by, I wouldn’t have hesitated to give my personal mobile number to a conference organiser or similar who asked for it (“just in case we need to contact you”). I’m finally getting good at maintaining boundaries in my advancing years.

We watched 28 Years Later last night and The Bone Temple tonight. I won’t make a case for them being great films, but there’s something exciting about seeing moviemaking with real vision and moral conviction.

By all accounts, Larry Kert was wonderful in the original Broadway production (and he certainly sounds great on the cast recording), but I seem to remember Sondheim saying it’s a pretty thankless role.

I maintain that the key to the brilliance of Barry Lyndon isn’t the ingenious cinematography or the exquisitely selected music, but Hordern’s droll narration.

Recent conversation with @emmylounib.bsky.social about modern dating. Me: I don’t think I would do well on the apps. I’m too reserved. Her: Mm hmmm. Me: And too sensitive. Her: Yeah. pause Her: And you’re a bit of a cunt. Ah, marriage.

I was disgusted with the FF/FG line at the last election of “We wanted to give you treats, but the Greens said you had to eat your vegetables”, but I was even more disgusted that voters were stupid enough to fall for it.

Michael Powell was born on this day in 1905. He started his career in Nice working with director Rex Ingram in a range of capacities. For THE MAGICIAN (1926), based on Somerset Maugham’s novel, he worked as Ingram’s assistant - and as an uncredited actor (here with Gladys Hamer).

Those series had great production values, and they were very resourceful. All the same, they couldn’t stretch to the kind of location shooting we’ve seen with The Night Manager.

It would. I was disappointed that Alfredson, Oldman et al didn’t tackle it, as I thought that was the best chance. But the BBC seem to be willing to spend real money on Le Carré now.

I mean, sure, Marr has never been able to recreate that uncanny early brilliance, but who the hell else has?! (I’ve often wondered what might been if Talking Heads had recruited him as a full member, as he apparently wanted, but they were already dealing with fractures of their own by then.)

Absolutely. I also think Morrissey’s golden period lasted longer than Will Davies allows. Vauxhall and I from 1994 was an essential album. The decline after that was bewilderingly swift.

Cheers, E. I had a read of that yesterday, and it’s very thoughtful. The whole question of the cultural shadow cast by violence against children is one that I hadn’t particularly considered before.

Listening to some of the people who spoke at that festival of cranks and miscreants in Moate last night, I feel that “carbon tax” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in terms of everything that has gone wrong in their lives.
