An Oireachtas committee will be told today that gap between the cost of operating public transport services and the amount generated by passenger fares has increased to more than €800 million. The political issue here is more: why will fossil fuels get gov subsidy but this spending gap won't.

When we lived in Stoneybatter, I had this row on a monthly basis with Greyhound. (There was a problem with roughly one in every three collections.) Invariably, they would suggest a wheelie bin to me, even though it had no relevance to the issue at hand. “There is nowhere to put a wheelie bin!”

Only 71,850 people have registered to vote in the new Higher Education constituency for the Seanad, despite a potential electorate of between 800,000 and 1,000,000 graduates. The unified 6-seater is open to graduates of over 80 higher level institutions, not just the historic TCD and NUI.

I’ve been getting together with my old band mates to play again recently, and it’s been just wonderful. But it’s one thing going over the old songs, quite another bouncing ideas for new material back and forth in the group chat. I don’t care if it’s a mid life crisis. There’s no energy like it.
