This CBC piece from @jmcelroy.bsky.social from 7 months back spoke about how the old BC property tax deferral worked for wealthy 55+ home owners to win the spread. Today the BC conservatives said they would restore the old rates if they win. #BCPoli #BCNDP #BCElection

Extending the personal exemption to $32k is economic suicide Our provincial healthcare and education systems would be absolutely devastated with such a large loss of tax income

#BCpoli Filed under "ohhh helllll no" conservativebc.ca/conservative... I'm so glad @millennialmoron.bsky.social published the interview about our old tax deferral program even though the rules changed after it was recorded, because we all KNEW this was coming if we got an election.
POSTED BY THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
October 9, 2026
SURREY, B.C. — A Conservative Party of BC government will reverse the NDP’s changes to the Property Tax Deferment Program, so seniors are not taxed out of their homes and can remain in the communities they helped build.

After nine years of the NDP, seniors are paying more in taxes than ever. The NDP changed the Property Tax Deferment Program so taxes deferred from 2026 onward accrue compound interest at prime plus 2 percent. Under the previous rules, seniors paid simple interest at prime minus 2 percent.

According to the BC Seniors Advocate, the NDP’s changes will cost seniors who defer their property taxes about $1,200 more per year on average. For many, the program is what allows them to stay in the homes they own.

“Seniors in Surrey and White Rock spent decades paying off their homes, and now David Eby is charging them more just to stay in them,” said Trevor Halford, candidate for Surrey-White Rock. “Hiking the interest on seniors living on fixed incomes is cruel, and it shows how out of touch this NDP government has become.”

A Conservative government led by Lorne Doerkson will restore the previous terms of the program, as part of a broader plan to fix seniors’ care across British Columbia.

The report says 51 per cent of parents with adult children aged 18 to 40 surveyed say they provided financial support in the past year.

Of those helping out, 56 per cent say the money was to help pay for groceries, while 43 per cent have helped with an unexpected or emergency expense.

Twenty-four per cent say the money was to help pay for rent.

On average, the report finds parents who provided financial support gave $6,151, while 24 per cent gave more than $10,000.

The report was based on an online survey of 1,000 Canadian parents with children aged 18 to 40 done for RBC between July 2 and July 8.

The polling industry’s professional body, the Canadian Research Insights Council, says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error because they do not randomly sample the population.
