with thin, brown-yarn covered uprights, a jagged grey-yarn blade, and two white-yarn 'boards' with slot for neck, this child-safe guillotine is perfect for any subversive or revolutionary décor

It was 38F/3.3ºC at 1:30 this morning, and I just arose (at 7) and it's 31ºF/ -0.6ºC and there is frost on the hayfield and cats nomming the papyrus.
Toward to top of the cat tree, Angie (brown tabby) sits in the cat hammock watching her brother (blacker tabby) try to get a mouth full of papyrus flowers.

So we have a Frost Warning and I have successfully wintered over a dwarf papyrus so I thought why not try? and now there's a 7-foot plant in the living room and the cats are excited I got them REAL cat grass and I don't think they care that it's a sedge.

"When I was 15, I spent a month working on an archeological dig.
One of the archeologists asked those kinds of 'getting to know you' questions you ask young people: Do you play sports? What's your favorite subject? And I told him, 'No, I don't play any sports. I do theater, I'm in choir, I play the violin and piano, I used to take art classes.' And he went, That's amazing!' And I said, 'But I'm not good at any of them.' And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind: 'I don't think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you've got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.' And that honestly changed my life. Because I went from a failure, someone who hadn't been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them. I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could 'win' at them."

I love the way just the flower is lit up. I was going for something like that here (with an impatient, ill-trained dog tugging its leash)
In the late afternoon, the sun hits most of a mound of pinkish Sedum 'Autumn Joy,' which is a cliché of a plant that I like anyway. Just beyond the sedum, a straggly rosebush holds one brilliant darkish-pink flower up to the light, dramatic against a line of dark green trees a ways off.
There's a transformer or something on the leftbehind the sedum, but you can ignore it if you try.

@concretebotany.bsky.social The notebooks from Redbubble are very fountain-pen friendly! Smooth and no ghosting! And they have a pocket-flap page in back. And I like having your brave flowers on the front!
Three writing samples, in vivid green, brown, and blue, in a Chinese EF nib, a Japanese F nib (these are much the same thickness), and a Chinese B nib, on a ruled notebook page.Another sentence on the flip side of the first page, showing that the fairly heavy wet ink in the Broad nib doesn't show through.

Writing or drawing? The fude gives you tremendous variation of the line width and seems to make sketching interesting, and the stub gives you less but makes your writing look cool. Not quite as cool as Tolkien's unless you practice, but nice with italics.

The story here is not about Wiley as an artist or even about the particular painting he created.
The true story is about the ongoing project of this Administration to remove the work, the stories, the history, and the contributions of Black people, from public life in our country. And to do so with great fanfare and explicit disrespect so that we cannot misapprehend the message.
The announcement that the embassy would seek to sell the painting - something never done before with commissioned State Department art - was designed to drive the message home. Our contributions are not wanted here, the Administration tells us in a myriad of ways.
Indeed, our contributions, they suggest, are offensive to this Administration and its supporters. The most revealing commentary about the removal of Wiley's work from the embassy came from the State Department spokesperson, who described Wiley's colorful depiction of actual Dominican artists in various poses of' conversation and engagement, as "very woke" and "aesthetically terrifying."
All you need to know about the broader project of this Administration, is in those words.Because I believe that this may well be an accurate description of the State Department officials' reaction to this painting. This after all, perfectly describes the position of this Administration towards Black and Latino people, to Middle Eastern people and to immigrants - we are "aesthetically terrifying" to them. We may be working at the Home Depot, cutting a lawn, or simply "walking while Black," but they experience a sense of terror at our very appearance. We must be rapists. Thugs. Pet-eaters. Terrorists.
This reponse to Wiley's uncontroversial painting sits simply in a space further down the continuum of "terror" they claim we provoke as justification for disappearing, imprisoning, and deporting ordinary men, women and children, and for allowing law enforcement officers to kill us with impunity over decades.

I am horrified and heartbroken by yesterday's attack on the LGBTQ community in Tucson and I can't imagine what the loved ones of the victims are feeling right now. We must stand up against hate and violence in all its forms before we let hateful actors turn back the clock and make violence like this the norm once again.
I stand with the Tucson community. We need to call out hate crimes for what they are, and for god's sake, we need gun control.

Post something random in hopes of a brilliant September:
A flight of four non-IPA beers from the Fort Orange Brewery, ranging from cloudy yellow to clear medium brown, in an orange tray with chakboard paint on the emphasized corners for writing the id of each beer. The glass holding indentations go all the way through, so when you pick it up the conical glasses are held near the top and you spill less, getting to your table.

"The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect. Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life.
This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle's business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven't given the public a real answer.
Until they do, the merger shouldn't move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede."

I hope my house is enjoying this. It's shaking like mad, and we're, I dunno, 50 yards away? Angle of photo is due to Angie, helping me as we both look out the very small bathroom window.
A tilted shot through a window screen of a rutted yard (there was a truck involved, and the euonymus bushes under/in front of the bedroom windows will trouble me no further), a pouff of ornamental grass, across a hayfield about 8"/20 cm high: the street beyond is entirely dirt. The large steamroller (give me a break. 'Power roller' just doesn't do it for me) is almost as wide at the roller as the street itself. For the record, it's going backwards. It looks bigger and more menacing in real life, though neither Bugs nor Coyote are involved.

In "Passeriform's New Horizons for Becoming Unbearable," we have my inability to be interested in any would-be meaningful aphorisms brush-lettered into ... well, anything.
A really tidy 'journal' spread, where ⅔ of the page is sepia and says, in lovingly looped cursive, "Some days you feel strong. Some days you feel tired. But every day you keep trying. You are UNSTOPPABLE."

One thing I have discovered while poking around the edges of the coffeetable is that I can tape particularly fine Christmas cards into last year's journal in a fold-out manner and then they are conserved, located in their time, and OFF THE COFFEE TABLE.
Scotch-taped along the fold to the outer edge of a page of a notebook covered in green handwriting, an eye-level pic of the faces of three dogs respectively wearing a ribbon bow, felt antlers, and a Santa hat. Above these sweet faces, it reads: "Define naughty..." The card is from my friend the virtue-ethicist who formerly taught theology and is now back to her original doctorate being a veterinarian. This is, like, her PERFECT card. The way it's taped I can still open and read it, and also turn it outwards and still read the journal page.
