A woman and a man watch a painter finishing a poster depicting Zohran Mamdani as "Zohran Mancommie" wearing a beret in the style of Che Guevara.
"Republicans red-baiting Democrats is just so lame and lazy!" exclaims the woman. The man, wearing a New York baseball cap as he looks at the painter, replied "Isn't that Cuomo?"

They use 1.6M. Bing's Copilot agrees with you.
🧮 How Crime Rates Are Typically Calculated
Most cities—including New York—calculate crime rates using this formula:

Crime Rate = (Number of Reported Crimes / Permanent Resident Population) × 1,000

This means:

The denominator is usually the number of permanent residents, based on census data.

It does not typically include commuters, tourists, or day-trippers, even though they contribute to the actual number of people present when crimes occur.

🗽 Why This Skews Manhattan's Crime Rate
Manhattan is a textbook example of how this method can distort reality:

The residential population is around 1.6 million.

But on a typical weekday, the actual population balloons to nearly 4 million, including:

~1.6 million commuters

~400,000 out-of-town visitors

~374,000 local day-trip visitors

Thousands of students, patients, and others

So when crime rates are calculated using only the 1.6 million residents, it can overstate the per capita crime rate, because the denominator is much smaller than the actual number of people exposed to crime.

Franco's General José Millán-Astray first introduced the slogan "Viva la Muerte!" ("Long Live Death") in a 1936 speech. Confronted by right-wing philosopher Miguel Unamuno's critique of his "necrophilous" oath, Millán-Astray then replied, "DEATH TO INTELLECTUALS!! DOWN WITH INTELLIGENCE”
"VIVA LA MUERTE" is written on a door with a skull-and-crossbones in the Basque municipality of Orduña (Urduña) following its 1937 capture by the nationalist army.

In a 1902 speech, US socialist Daniel DeLeon likened the US Supreme Court to the Roman Republic's College of Pontiffs.
Finally, the Colleges of Priests. I said they represented the Judiciary. They did in this way: If a law or anelection distasteful to the ruling class was forced through; if, for any one of the thousand and one causes apt to arise wherever actual oligarchic power is draped in the drapery of democratic forms, the ruling class of Rome found it prudent to yield in Forum and Senate Hall; in such case the Colleges of Priests would conveniently discover someflatr in the auspices, some defect in the sacrifices. That annulled the election or the law, as "condemned by the Gods."
