I have separated the art from the artist and am now whipping the art to stiff peaks, after which I will gently fold it into the artist before baking at 350 til golden and puffed

I always forget about accomodation whenever I think about going somewhere. I'll be all "oh, I can get a flight to Croatia for like £30!!! I should do that!!!!" and then someone is like "and where will you stay" and then I'm like ... :( good question :(

Mmm went swimming yesterday, sand got caught in my wetsuit and I didn't change out of it for 4 hours. I do not advise this. I have grazes from where the sand was rubbing against my legs and what I can only describe as nappy rash 😭

We could even just take an entire day to do the particularly difficult parts like the Devil's Staircase 🤔 it sounds like a fun long term project tbh

Like the idea of maybe 5-6 hours of walking a day for three days, then going back to my lovely warm bed, then continuing the trail from when I left off seems very doable. And my mum wants to do it too and she's... 64. So she could do it this way!

Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I've thought about maybe doing it in chunks of 3 so I'm only on the trail for 3 nights or so, then going home to rest for however long I need and then going back to do it. I don't know if that "counts" but I'm ENJOYING NATURE not trying to win a medal.

I have considered how I could do the WHW in small chunks though, I don't think my disabled body could keep up with the pace of 8 days walking nonstop, and even if I could it'd probably be PRETTY MISERABLE whereas I'd like to take my time and enjoy things

Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Not saying it's not doable, just that *I* am not the person to attempt it, by myself, alone, just me, and no winter hillwalking experience

Sometimes I'm glad I have a cat to tether me to reality slightly, because on several occasions now I've thought "perhaps I could do the West Highland Way when I inevitably get horribly depressed later in the year" Yeah yeah, perhaps I could do the WHW... in winter??? No chance.

Whenever things like this happen in institutions, there's always a "lessons will be learned, staff will be trained" response, which I'm not opposed to, I'm sure it would help in many cases. But I'm not sure you can train someone into compassion and empathy, which is what is often lacking
110
Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I'm neither a mental health nor childcare professional, but just on a purely human level, I can't imagine responding like *that* to a depressed, anxious, terrified young person that's far from their home and is struggling. I can't imagine putting my phone down and not replying to them. Jesus Christ.

Sometimes LAs will put certain high-attaining kids into boarding school as an alternative to residential care, because it's cheaper for them and results in better educational outcomes. But they often seem to have a very lax definition of "care" and how to support vulnerable children, as this shows
110
Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I would hope that any kids at boarding schools would have robust support plans in place and a caring and supportive guardian figure as a bare minimum. Let alone international students, and ones that have a known vulnerability. I'm so sorry, Luna ❤️

Yeah, all the language skills in the world aren't going to make a difference if you use them to be an arsehole to a kid. That poor girl. 40 hours without being seen is just... incomprehensible, for any child, let alone one that they knew was struggling. And her parents as well, god this is so sad.

It's impossible to overstate the positive impact that my ADHD medication has had on my life tbh. For a start, having some semblance of impulse control means there's no longer a 0.5 second gap between "I feel bad" and immediately attempting to remove myself from existence via the nearest exit.

I was diagnosed autistic aged 7 or so, but the lack of support led to me missing out on significant chunks of my primary education, self harming by the time I was 9, and leaving school aged 15. If claiming PIP etc. means I'm part of a "lost generation" then so be it, many of my friends are DEAD.

Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Into the care system at 2, suicidal by 12, drinking and using drugs at 16, homeless at 19, sectioned at 20. Here I thought it was the decades of public sector cuts and deliberate underfunding leaving vulnerable children and families unsupported, but no, it's PIP!

Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I've never worked a "regular" job, I never finished secondary school, I managed to get into university SOMEHOW and dropped out at the end of my second year, I'm still very much unemployed so I'm sure I'd be considered part of this "lost" generation. I credit that to the decades I spent unsupported.

Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
(*private, because it was impossible to access the therapy I needed despite asking for almost a decade, thanks to our crumbling health and social care system)

Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
As for PIP "creating a lost generation", mine covers the cost of my therapy. In December 2022, I made myself a promise that I'd give (private*) therapy a shot and that if I still wanted to kill myself three months later, I would. AFAIK, I'm not writing this from the grave 👍

Yeah, because they don't give amphetamines out to everybody and I require them to do (checks notes) most daily living activities
150
Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Or even just how many people are recieving diagnoses vs. actually applying for PIP, because there's this idea that the *only* reason someone would seek a diagnosis would be to claim PIP. Most people I know would never, even if it'd benefit them, precisely because of the stigma around benefits.

Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Yeah, I think it'd be far more enlightening if they mentioned how many people claiming on the grounds of ADHD, autism, mental health etc. were rejected rather than just saying "more people are claiming for ADHD!" Obviously, they will never do that because it doesn't fit the narrative.

Even as a deeply non religious person, I am very much in favour of a day of enforced rest. You don't have to go to church about it if that's not your thing, but good god in a 24/7 capitalist hellscape where everything is all the time, the concept of Sabbath observance has a lot of merit.

And what we're also not going to do is talk shit about island communities and imply they're ~wrong~ and should do things our way. Oh, boohoo, you went to Lewis and the shops were shut on a Sunday and it inconvenienced you so they should change it? No babe THAT'S ON YOU.
130
Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
But what we're not going to do is complain that it's toooooo hard :( and should be made easier :( nobody made English "easier" for my great grandpa or the generations before him. They just beat him for making mistakes, and also beat him for speaking his native language. As a kid!!! We'll be fine.
110
Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Or they'll be frustrated with certain grammatical etc. features of the language and be all like "they should make it more simple!!!!" Babe, it's a language! It's going to be hard work! Learning a language *is* hard work! You're gonna get things wrong!! That's what learning a language is!

Apparently I'm in a ranting mood so I'm adding this separately since it isn't directly relevant to the original post but like. I have lost count of how many Gaelic learners will get things blatantly wrong and then get incredibly hostile when a native speaker corrects them.
220
Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I feel similar around Gaelic learners who learn the language for fun or curiosity but then don't engage with native speakers at all, have no real care or interest in learning about the culture or the issues that affect Gaelic speaking communities + are sometimes actively hostile towards them

Also idk, with a language that has such a rich history and is so integral to Deaf culture and has been so heavily suppressed at various points, it just feels really weird to try and ignore that and almost remove the Deaf community out of a language THEY CREATED

Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
"It improves job prospects!" Yeah, sure, cool. You can also now communicate with people who sign as their preferred or only method of communication, and that is more than enough. Like I'm not Deaf so maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill but it just strikes me as weird to center yourself!
120
Teàrlaidh @parttimecorvid.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I find it deeply weird how many resources for beginner BSL learners highlight the benefits to me as a hearing person tbh. Or when people online are like "learning sign language is helpful even if you're not deaf because (insert whatever situation where you may not be able to use verbal speech)"

(Pretty sure it's a L. sordida, the spore print is more for fun and curiosity than actual ID purposes. I've been wanting to do it for ages but I seldom find a fresh fungus!) (Yes, I used fungus instead of mushroom for alliteration purposes)

Me: My flat is a mess, it's so chaotic, I don't have any space for my stuff, I'm so stressed with all the clutter, I really need to put stuff away and declutter Also me: Oooh, cute new mushie just popped up today! What a good candidate for my first ever attempt at a spore print!
A photo of a mushroom on my hand. It's a small, purple mushroom. Photo of the same mushroom on a table. The gills are visible and are crowded and purple.Close up view of the gills of the mushroom. They're a deep lilac colour.

There are SO MANY unidentified mushrooms on iNat and I want to help with that, but mushroom ID is so hard. Hence the reason there's so many unidentified mushies. But it Bothers Me!

I got so excited thinking that I'd seen an uncommon gull species in the city and got real close to take a look and get some photos. Then I got home to discover it was just a herring gull that hadn't grown into its adult plumage yet.

Doing important work by seeing a photo of a mushroom and IDing it as agaricomycetes. Or "yep, that's a fly" and setting it as diptera. My favourite thing is when someone more knowledgeable comes around and then correctly IDs it to species after it's been sitting in "unknown" for months.
