I blame this on IPv4 and the obvious resultant address exhaustion leading to NATs making pure peer to peer communication harder, ensuring that we needed centralized places to meet up instead of making it normal to gather at your friend's house figuratively.

there is no such thing as "age verification." All "age verification" is actually "identity verification." You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper. But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware. Period.

Every accusation he makes is a confession. Remember when he called that rescue guy a pedo while trying to get an invitation to the “wildest party” on Epstein Island? Every time.

Why does it bother me when a manager or the CEO of my employer boasts about using Copilot to write their emails? This. This is why
A post by "rederiswrites" (with a photo of who I assume is Adam Conover in the background) that reads: "Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is *rude*.

It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't be bothered to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.

It's rude."

"Why are people so negative about the economy?" Consider this. There are two possibilities: 1) He's right and my livelihood is screwed. Maybe not 18 months but soon. 2) He's full of shit, it won't happen, and AI is a giant bubble that will crash the economy. Why would I feel good about either?
Microsoft AI chief gives it 18 months—for all white-collar work to be automated by AI

The defining principle of our society is that people who were lucky during the dot com boom or Web 2.0 should have vast and ever-growing individual power over the entire world. The only acceptable check on their power is their squabbles with each other.

Interesting piece which reveals a lot of the tech bro ignorance of government: DOGEr comes in, expects to find lots of inefficiency, is at least willing to acknowledge he was wrong unlike the hard core ideologues.
Now that he’s there, he says he finds himself surrounded by people who “love their jobs,” who came to the government with a sense of mission driving their work.

“In a sense, that makes the DOGE agenda a little bit more complicated, because if half the government took [a buyout offer], then we wouldn’t have to do much more,” he says, implying software can replace departing employees. “We’d just basically use software to plug holes. But that’s not what’s happening.”

Lavingia’s skills with automation, which have helped keep Gumroad lean, are what he hopes to bring to the VA. But when it comes down to it, what he’s found is a machine that largely functions, though it doesn’t make decisions as fast as a startup might.

“I would say the culture shock is mostly a lot of meetings, not a lot of decisions,” he says. “But honestly, it’s kind of fine—because the government works. It’s not as inefficient as I was expecting, to be honest. I was hoping for more easy wins.”

So, I had an interesting conversation last week. For @fastcompany.com, I spoke with Sahil Lavingia, the founder of Gumroad, on his decision to work at the VA, a role he has thanks to DOGE. He was remarkably transparent. www.fastcompany.com/91330297/dog... (Gift link)

Man, I can't wait for managers to use AI slop to generate jira stories for me and make confluence docs useless.

Foreign Friends with Travel Plans to the U.S. for Conventions: A bit back I said you should maybe reconsider those plans. I would like to amend my prior statement. Cancel them. Cancel them now. We cannot keep you safe from our own government. Take your holiday in Spain or something.

Wild how efficiency and updating means moving to online only support for social security issues, but removing online support for student loan issues.

It's a problem because without section 230 online user made content can't exist. Nobody has enough moderators to watch and police every YouTube video uploaded, which is what YouTube would have to do if they were made responsible.
